Bariatric Chairs: Seat Width, Weight Rating and Six Picks

How a bariatric chair differs from a big and tall one, in seat width and rating, plus six chairs whose listings print both numbers and who each chair suits.

A chair sold as oversized can still leave the arms pressing into your hips, and its weight rating, if the listing gives one at all, can be buried in a spec tab. Shopping by the words extra wide or big and tall is one way into that chair: one dealer’s listing uses big and tall for a seat just 2 inches wider than the standard chair in the same collection. Below are six chairs whose listings print both numbers that matter, the rating and the seat width, with who each one suits and what it gets wrong.

The short answer

Chair Best for Price (reference) Why
Lesro Newport 750 lb bariatric chair The lowest quoted price of the six picks on a 30 inch seat $859 750 lb, 30 inches between the arms
Lesro Mystic Lounge 750 lb bariatric chair A living-room lounge chair $1,399 30 by 20½ inch seat, upholstered panel arms
Lesro Luxe 750 lb bariatric chair Wood legs and a tailored look $1,597 at Husky Seating 30 by 20 inch seat, thick cushion
Lesro Fremont 750 lb bariatric chair Shorter legs $1,571 at Husky Seating The lowest seat of the six picks, 17½ inches
Flash Furniture HERCULES 500 lb reception chair Up to 500 lb on a budget $233 24½ by 21 inch seat, padded arms
Flash Furniture HERCULES 1,000 lb armless chair The highest rating of these six, with no arms to squeeze past From $128 1,000 lb static, no arms

What makes a chair bariatric: the width, not the word

The clearest way to see it is one collection sold in three sizes. One heavy-duty dealer lists three chairs from Lesro’s Lenox Steel line with full dimensions: a 300 lb guest chair, a 400 lb chair that dealer labels big and tall, and a 750 lb chair it labels bariatric.

Lenox Steel chair Rated to Seat width Seat depth Seat height Overall width
Guest chair 300 lb 19.5 in 17 in 18.5 in 22.5 in
Big and tall oversize guest chair 400 lb 21.5 in 17 in 18.5 in 24.5 in
Bariatric chair 750 lb 30 in 17 in 18.5 in 33 in

Between the big and tall chair and the bariatric one, the rating goes from 400 to 750 lb and the seat gets 8½ inches wider, by our arithmetic. Depth and height do not move at all. In that collection, the big and tall seat is too narrow for anyone wider than 21½ inches; only the bariatric one clears it. The 750 lb chair’s own listing title says big and tall as well, so the label will not sort them for you; the numbers will.

There is a standard that puts floors under those numbers. ANSI/BIFMA X5.41-2021 covers large-occupant public and lounge seating in two tiers, one built on a 400 lb user and one on a 600 lb user, with minimum seat widths of 22 and 26 inches. On seat width alone, the four 30 inch picks below clear the upper floor, the 24½ inch HERCULES sits between the two, and the 21½ inch armless HERCULES is under the lower one. When a listing names the standard, as the dealer page for SitOnIt’s Kindl bariatric chairs does, that is a test claim and a bare rating is the maker’s own figure (our reading); the Mystic Lounge’s purchase page and both HERCULES pages mention ANSI/BIFMA only generally, without naming X5.41.

And treat the rating as a static one unless the page says otherwise. Husky Seating’s weight capacity definitions say advertised capacities “should be assumed as static load capacities unless otherwise noted in the product description”, and that “the act of sitting down can increase the load exerted on a chair”. Leave room between your weight and the number on the page.

The six chairs

Lesro Newport 750 lb bariatric chair

$859Price for reference only750 lb · 30 in seat between the arms · 18 in deep · 18.5 in highView it on the brand's site →

The lowest quoted price of the six picks on a full 30 inch seat. A second dealer lists it as Lesro’s, and that listing is specific about where the 30 inches is measured: between the arms. Steel frame, upholstered seat and back, upward-sloping arms, 33½ inches wide overall. The $859 is for standard fabric or vinyl; upgrade fabric or healthcare vinyl is $969. Pick it for a home office, a dining corner or a bedroom if a metal frame suits the room.

Drawbacks: The shallowest seat of the four 750 lb picks, at 18 inches, and the highest arms of the four 30 inch picks, 27½ inches from the floor. Husky Seating's spec table lists 770 lb against 750 lb in its own description; plan on 750.

Lesro Mystic Lounge 750 lb bariatric chair

$1,399Price for reference only750 lb · 30 x 20.5 in seat · 19 in high · arms 25 in from the floorView it on the brand's site →

The pick for a living room if you want a lounge chair: mid-century lines, fully upholstered panel arms, steel legs and a 30 by 20½ inch seat, the deepest of the four 30 inch picks. That depth is the thing to check if your thighs are long, because it decides whether they rest on the cushion or overhang the front edge. Standard fabric or vinyl is $1,399; upgrade fabric or healthcare vinyl is $1,599. A second dealer lists it as Lesro’s, with the same seat dimensions.

Drawbacks: At 36 inches it is the widest of the six picks overall, so measure the doorway and the spot it is going into.

Lesro Luxe 750 lb bariatric chair

$1,597 at Husky SeatingPrice for reference only750 lb · 30 x 20 in seat · 18.5 in highView it on the brand's site →

The listing calls the style tuxedo lounge: slim arms, an angled back and a thick seat, 10½ inches of it. The seat is 30 inches wide and 20 deep, 18½ inches off the floor, and the whole chair is 34½ inches wide. A second dealer, Modern Office Furniture, lists a 750 lb Luxe with the same 30 by 20 inch seat and a 25 inch arm height; that it is the same chair is our reading, from the matching seat and overall dimensions. It is the pick for a living room if you want wood: the listing’s frame options include wood finishes such as walnut, cherry and mahogany, as well as steel.

Drawbacks: Husky Seating's page prints no arm height.

Lesro Fremont 750 lb bariatric chair

$1,571 at Husky SeatingPrice for reference only750 lb · 30 x 19.5 in seat · 17.5 in highView it on the brand's site →

The lowest seat of the six picks, 17½ inches from the floor, on solid hardwood legs. If your feet do not rest flat on the floor in an ordinary dining chair, this is the one to look at first. It is fully upholstered, with a 30 by 19½ inch seat and arms 25¾ inches from the floor.

Drawbacks: The chair alone weighs 101 lb, so it is not one to move from room to room, and it is 35½ inches wide overall.

Flash Furniture HERCULES Big & Tall 500 lb reception chair (GO-2136)

$233Price for reference only500 lb · 24.5 x 21 in seat · 19.75 in highView it on the brand's site →

Not a bariatric chair; its listing sells it as big and tall, the step below, rated to 500 lb, with a 24½ inch seat that is 21 inches deep, the deepest seat of the six picks. Padded arms and a sled base. At $233 it is the lowest quoted price of the six picks on a chair with arms rated to 500 lb or more, and the right one if you are well under 500 lb and your seated hips are well under 24 inches.

Drawbacks: 500 lb is the limit, not a target. The upholstery is LeatherSoft, which the listing describes as leather and polyurethane.

Flash Furniture HERCULES 1,000 lb armless reception chair

From $128Price for reference only1,000 lb static · 21.5 x 16.5 in seat · 18 in high · no armsView it on the brand's site →

The highest rating of the six picks and the lowest quoted price: a steel stacking chair made for waiting rooms, rated to 1,000 lb static, with no arms at all. The seat is only 21½ inches wide, but with nothing at the sides there is nothing to press into your hips. That makes it a sturdy spare chair for a desk, a dining table or a visitor, for anyone whose trouble with ordinary chairs is the arms. $128 in black fabric, $129 in black vinyl.

Drawbacks: A 21½ by 16½ inch seat on 2½ inches of foam is a waiting-room chair, not an armchair for a long evening. The page prints two ratings, 1,000 lb in the title, 1,000 lb static in the feature list, and 1,500 in its spec table; plan on 1,000.

How to choose: four numbers you can measure at home

  1. Seated hip width, against seat width. Sit on a hard, flat surface and measure straight across the widest part of your hips; our wide office chair guide has the full method. Buy a seat wider than that number, not equal to it. If your number is comfortably under 24½, the GO-2136 fits; if it is over that, up to just under 30 inches, the four 30 inch picks are the ones that do.
  2. Your weight, against the rating. Under 500 lb with room to spare, the GO-2136 is rated for you. Up to 750 lb with room to spare, the four Lesro picks are. The only one of the six picks rated higher is the armless HERCULES.
  3. Floor to the back of your knee, against seat height. Sit with your feet flat and measure to the crease behind your knee. Seat heights across the six picks run from 17½ inches on the Fremont to 19¾ on the GO-2136; choose one at or just under your number.
  4. Back of your hips to the back of your knee, against seat depth. Depths across the six picks run from 16½ to 21 inches. A seat a little shorter than your number keeps the front edge from pressing behind your knee; a much shorter one leaves your thighs overhanging.

Then measure the doorway. Overall widths across the six picks run from 26½ inches to 36.

Before you order

  • Read the numbers on the page you buy from, not the name. A 750 lb chair sold as Savoy is listed with a 30 inch seat at one dealer and a 24 inch seat at another.
  • Check the delivery address is allowed. One dealer’s Kwalu listings, including a 525 lb chair with a 30 inch seat, say the chairs ship only to commercial addresses, not homes.
  • Read the dealer’s return terms before you order: Modern Office Furniture for the Newport and Mystic Lounge, Husky Seating for the Luxe and Fremont, BizChair for the two HERCULES chairs. Every one of the six picks arrives needing assembly.

If you want to put your feet up, that is a different chair, and our big and tall recliner guide covers the ratings for those. More seating guides are in the seating section.

Where these numbers come from

Ratings, dimensions and prices are from the dealer and maker listings linked on each chair, read on 30 September 2026, and the Luxe and Fremont prices from Husky Seating on 1 October 2026; where a page printed two different figures, both are given above. The seat-width floors are from a trade report on the BIFMA standard, which BIFMA supplies on order. Arithmetic is ours.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bariatric chair?

A chair built and rated for heavier people, with a seat wide enough to match. Five of the six picks in this guide are sold as bariatric and rated 750 lb to 1,000 lb, and the four picks rated to 750 lb all have 30 inch seats; the sixth pick, sold as big and tall, is rated to 500 lb. Bariatric is a size and load class, so the figures to read are the weight rating and the seat width on the listing.

How wide is a bariatric chair seat?

The four 750 lb picks here have 30 inch seats. The large-occupant lounge-seating standard sets minimum seat widths of 22 inches for its 400 lb tier and 26 inches for its 600 lb tier. Check the page you buy from: a 750 lb chair sold as Savoy is listed with a 30 inch seat at one dealer and a 24 inch seat at another.

What is the difference between a bariatric chair and a big and tall chair?

Seat width and weight rating. In Lesro's Lenox Steel collection, as one dealer lists it, the chair labelled big and tall is rated to 400 lb with a 21.5 inch seat, and the one labelled bariatric to 750 lb with a 30 inch seat; seat depth and seat height are the same on both. The bariatric chair's own listing title also says big and tall, so go by the numbers, not the label.

Is the weight rating on a bariatric chair static?

Assume so unless the listing says otherwise. Husky Seating, a heavy-duty furniture dealer, states that advertised capacities should be assumed to be static loads, and the 1,000 lb HERCULES listing here says static in its feature list. Sitting down hard puts more load on a chair than sitting still, so leave room between your weight and the rating.
