Heavy Duty Folding Chairs for 400 lbs: Static vs Dynamic
Six indoor folding chairs rated 480 to 1,102 lb with seats 15.5 to 17.75 inches wide, and the dynamic rating that five of the six picks leave unprinted.

The folding chairs come out of the hall closet, and the question you would rather not ask out loud is whether this one will hold you. The number printed on the listing does not settle it, because 650 lb can mean two very different things, and only one of the six picks’ pages below prints both. Below are six indoor folding chairs whose pages print both a weight rating and a seat width, what each rating covers, and which one to buy for a church hall, a card table or a spare-room stack.
The short answer

Static and dynamic: two numbers, one chair
On the one maker’s pages here that print both, a rating is the result of one of two tests. There, static is the most the chair holds when the load is applied gradually and stays still; dynamic is what it withstands under sudden impact or movement, rated by a drop test in which a weight falls onto the seat from 6 inches above it. Dropping into a chair looks more like the second test than the first; that comparison is ours, not the maker’s.
The gap between them is large. We read ten folding chair pages from that maker, EventStable’s own Titan line, and every one prints a spec-table dynamic figure of 250 to 353 lb beside a first spec-table capacity line of 450 to 1,102 lb. Seven label that first figure static; three call it plain weight capacity. The resin chair in the picks below is the extreme: its spec table prints 1,102 lb static and 353 lb dynamic, while the description on the same page says the resin was tested to “withstand dynamic weight of 450+ lbs.” Plan on the lower one. Put a 400 lb person on it and the arithmetic runs both ways: 702 lb under the static rating and 47 lb over the spec-table dynamic figure (our arithmetic).
The other five picks print no dynamic figure. The table below shows which figures are labelled static. Our reading, not the makers’: treat an unlabelled number as the static kind until the seller tells you otherwise.
Width is a separate question
The rating says nothing about whether you fit. Across the six picks, seats run from 15.5 to 17.75 inches wide. ANSI/BIFMA X5.41, a large-occupant standard for public and lounge seating, sets a 22 inch minimum seat width for its 400 lb tier. None of the six picks’ pages names X5.41 (four mention ANSI/BIFMA without naming a standard); we use its 22 inches only as a yardstick, and no seat here reaches it (our comparison). Our wide office chair guide explains how to measure your hips sitting down, which is the number to hold against these widths.

The six picks
Flash Furniture HERCULES Big and Tall Extra Wide Plastic Folding Chair
If you only buy one kind, start here. It is the one chair on this list sold as big and tall, and its seat is 17.75 inches wide and 17.75 deep, against 15.5 by 15.5 on the same maker’s standard HERCULES plastic chair. The spec sheet puts the capacity at 650 lb and the product copy calls it static. The back is wider too, 19.75 inches across and 18 inches tall from the seat, and the seat sits 18 inches off the floor. Folded, it is 2.75 inches thick; nested, the chairs stack 50 high from the floor.
Drawbacks: No dynamic figure is printed. The maker's spec page linked here is for the four-pack, the same chair sold as a set of four; the single chair is sold at BizChair.
MityLite MeshOne Folding Chair
The seat on the MeshOne spec sheet is 17.75 inches wide and 18 inches long, the longest seat measurement in the table below, and the frame is rated to 1,000 lb. The seat and back are elastomeric mesh rather than a hard shell, and a built-in ganging system joins chairs into rows. MityLite’s plastic-seat FlexOne CS carries the same 1,000 lb figure on a 17.5 inch seat. The price is Worthington Direct’s listing for MityLite #55045, part number 1FMBKSBLK00, black mesh on a black frame, on 1 October 2026.
Drawbacks: MityLite itself prints no price and takes quote requests. The 1,000 lb figure is not labelled static or dynamic.
TitanPRO Resin Folding Chair
The TitanPRO’s 353 lb is the highest spec-table dynamic figure of the ten EventStable folding chairs read for this guide; the description on the same page says 450+ lb dynamic; plan on 353. The frame is resin, the seat is padded and sits 17.5 inches high, and the chair weighs 10 lb in the spec table (10.5 in the description). The page’s FAQ says the resin chairs were independently tested by SGS laboratories to hold more than 1,000 lb static. On the spec table’s own figures, the chair is rated under a drop at about a third of its static figure (our arithmetic).
Drawbacks: The seat is 15.5 inches wide and 14 deep, among the smallest here, and the spec-table dynamic figure, 353 lb, is under 400. The page gives two dynamic numbers.
Flash Furniture HERCULES Resin Folding Chair with Vinyl Seat
A resin chair for less, in white at $25.99 (black is $28.49 and red mahogany $33.49). The maker’s spec sheet says 800 lb. BizChair’s own title says 800 lb; the description below it says 1,000 lb static. The vinyl seat is removable.
Drawbacks: A 13.75 inch seat depth is the shallowest here. The two pages disagree on the rating, and neither prints a dynamic figure.
National Public Seating 1310 Padded Metal Folding Chair
A steel chair with a 1¼ inch padded vinyl seat and back, double hinges and three double-riveted U-braces. The seat is 16 inches by 16 and 17¾ inches high, with a waterfall front edge, on an 18 gauge frame. At $146 for four, it is the one to buy for a hall that needs padded seats in a row.
Drawbacks: Sold only by the case of four, and the listing adds a line to contact the store or log in for pricing. The 480 lb figure is not labelled static or dynamic.
Flash Furniture HERCULES HA-F003D Padded Metal Folding Chair
The cheapest padded seat with a price on this list. One Flash Furniture page gives it two numbers: Weight Capacity: 500 lbs in the spec table and 600 lb static in the product copy. Plan on the lower one. It is a double-braced steel chair with a 15.75 by 15.5 inch seat, the lowest seat here at 17 inches, and it folds to 2.5 inches thick.
Drawbacks: The padding is half an inch. The same page gives two ratings and no dynamic figure.
Side by side
| Chair | Rating as printed | Labelled | Seat width × depth | Seat height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flash HERCULES Big and Tall | 650 lb | Static | 17.75 × 17.75 in | 18 in |
| MityLite MeshOne | 1,000 lb | Not said | 17.75 × 18 in | 18.5 in |
| MityLite FlexOne CS | 1,000 lb | Not said | 17.5 × 17.75 in | 18.5 in |
| National Public Seating 1310 | 480 lb | Not said | 16 × 16 in | 17.75 in |
| Flash HERCULES HA-F003D | 500 lb / 600 lb | Spec / static | 15.75 × 15.5 in | 17 in |
| Flash HERCULES resin, vinyl seat | 800 lb | Not said (BizChair’s description: 1,000 lb static) | 15.5 × 13.75 in | 18.5 in |
| TitanPRO Resin | 1,102 lb / 353 lb | Static / dynamic (spec table) | 15.5 × 14 in | 17.5 in |
| Flash HERCULES standard plastic | 650 lb | Not said | 15.5 × 15.5 in | 17.75 in |
The MityLite depths are the seat length on the spec sheets. The TitanPRO page’s description gives a second dynamic figure, 450+ lb.
How to choose
- Measure your hips sitting down. If the number is over 17.75 inches, no seat on this list is wider than you, and the two 17.75 inch seats come closest.
- Hold your weight against the dynamic figure where there is one (our rule of thumb). Only the TitanPRO prints one here: 353 lb in its spec table. For the other five, ask the seller for it; a seller who cannot answer has told you the page is all there is.
- Check seat height if standing up is the hard part. The six picks run from 17 inches (the HA-F003D) to 18.5 (the MeshOne and the Flash resin chair). Measure a chair you get out of easily, floor to the top of the seat, and pick the closest.
- Pick the seat for how long you sit. For a long service, the padded NPS 1310, or the MeshOne, whose mesh MityLite says minimizes pressure points; for a card game or overflow seating, the plastic Big and Tall chair.

Before you order
- Read the whole page, not the title. Three of the ten EventStable pages print a different number in the product name than in the spec table. One of them, the Titan Series plastic chair with drain holes, says 800 lb in its title, 300 lb in its description, and 450 lb static and 250 lb dynamic in its spec table.
- Check the chairs in a card table set separately. The chairs in one COSCO five-piece resin set are rated to hold 250 lb, whatever the table says.
- Do not read XL as a rating. COSCO’s XL Comfort padded chair has a weight capacity rating of up to 300 pounds.
- Check the return terms before you buy a case, since fit is only settled by sitting on one.
The same two questions, rating and width, run through our comparison of heavy duty office chair ratings. More seating guides are in the seating section.
Where these numbers come from
Ratings and seat sizes are from the makers’ product pages and spec sheets, except the NPS 1310 (WebstaurantStore’s listing) and one 1,000 lb figure from BizChair’s copy; the static and dynamic definitions are EventStable’s, and prices are from BizChair, EventStable and WebstaurantStore, all read on 30 September 2026, and for the MeshOne from Worthington Direct on 1 October 2026. The 22 inch figure from ANSI/BIFMA X5.41 comes from the trade report linked above; the standard itself, which BIFMA supplies on order, was not read.
Frequently asked questions
Will a folding chair rated 400 lbs hold a 400 lb person?
It depends which rating the 400 is. The TitanPRO Resin Folding Chair's spec table prints 1,102 lb static and 353 lb dynamic; the description on the same page says the resin was tested to 450+ lb dynamic. If a page does not say which kind its number is, ask before buying.
What is the difference between static and dynamic weight capacity on a folding chair?
On EventStable's pages, static is the most the chair holds with the weight applied gradually and kept still, and dynamic is what it withstands under sudden impact or movement, tested by dropping a weight onto the seat from 6 inches above it. On the ten EventStable pages read for this guide, the spec-table dynamic figures ran from 250 to 353 lb.
How wide is the seat on a heavy duty folding chair?
The six picks here run from 15.5 to 17.75 inches across the seat. The two widest, at 17.75 inches, are Flash Furniture's HERCULES Big and Tall chair and the MityLite MeshOne. ANSI/BIFMA X5.41, a large-occupant standard for public and lounge seating that none of these six pages names, sets a 22 inch minimum for its 400 lb tier; used here only as a yardstick, all six are below it.
Are plastic folding chairs strong enough for 400 lbs?
Some carry high printed ratings: 650 lb static on Flash Furniture's HERCULES Big and Tall plastic chair, and 1,000 lb on MityLite's plastic-seat FlexOne CS. Neither page prints a dynamic figure. On the five chairs EventStable sells as plastic, the spec-table dynamic rating was 250 lb.
