Heavy Duty Office Chairs: Weight Limits, Side by Side

Search for a heavy duty office chair and the numbers come at you loose: 300, 350, 400, 500. What no listing gives you is the same numbers side by side, from the makers’ own pages, with the price next to each one. Here they are.

Three things the table shows

The ratings come in bands, and price does not predict the band. 330 lb is the most common figure above the ordinary market, and it costs anywhere from $170 (Sihoo M18) to $899 (Hinomi X2 Pro): seven chairs at the same rating, a five-fold spread in price, and the difference is adjustments and build, not load. The jump to 400 lb and above is where the price jumps too: nothing above 330 lb on this list is under $2,000 except the Steelcase chairs, whose store price we do not quote here.

The Aeron is three chairs, not one. Herman Miller rates size A to 300 lb, B to 350 lb and C to 400 lb, at the same $2,150, and sizes them by height: A for 4’10” to 5’4”, B for 5’2” to 6’, C for 5’10” to 6’6”. The rating you get depends on the size you are told to buy.

The four ordinary chairs here are 275 to 300. Branch prints 275 lb on its ergonomic chair, Hinomi 275 lb on its entry chair, Autonomous 300 lb, Herman Miller 300 lb on the small Aeron. When a listing prints nothing, assume that band and ask.

What a rating is not

A published rating is the maker’s statement about what the frame, mechanism and gas cylinder will carry. Three things it does not say:

• It is not a margin. Buy at least 30 lb under it. A rating is a ceiling, and you hit a chair harder sitting down than the number suggests.
• It is not a width. A 400 lb chair with a 19 inch seat is still the wrong chair for a wide body. Seat width and the space between the arms are separate numbers; our guide to wide seat office chairs covers measuring yourself seated and reading the widths makers do and do not publish.
• It is not a test standard. BIFMA, the office furniture trade body, publishes a general office chair standard and a separate large-occupant one, ANSI/BIFMA X5.11, and a large-occupant lounge-seating standard, ANSI/BIFMA X5.41, that tests at 400 lb and 600 lb user tiers with minimum seat widths of 22 and 26 inches. A chair that names a standard has been through a published protocol; a bare number is a sentence the maker wrote. None of the makers above names X5.11 on the product pages linked here, so read every figure in the table as a maker’s rating.

Which of these to actually buy

The table is for comparing; the picks, with who each one suits and what is wrong with it, are in our guide to the best office chair for a heavy person. The short version: Leap Plus or the 24/7 HD if you need 450 lb or more and can pay for it, the Aeron size C if you are tall and heavy, and a Hinomi or Sihoo at 330 lb if you weigh under 300 lb and want to spend less than $900.

Before you order

1. Read the rating on the maker’s page, not the marketplace listing, and buy 30 lb under it.
2. Ask for seat width and width between the arms if the page does not print them. A seller who can answer has measured the chair.
3. Check the seat-height range against your inseam, especially where the size is chosen by height.
4. Keep the written answers. If a rating turns out to be wrong later, an email is a different thing from a remembered conversation.

Of the chairs whose makers publish a rating, the Steelcase Leap Plus is rated to 500 lb, the Nightingale 24/7 HD to 450 lb, and the Herman Miller Aeron size C and the standard Steelcase Leap to 400 lb. Below that, a group of chairs from Hinomi and Sihoo are rated to 330 lb at $170 to $899.

How much weight can a regular office chair hold?

The mid-priced ergonomic chairs we checked are rated to 275 lb (Branch, Hinomi Q2) or 300 lb (Autonomous ErgoChair Pro, Herman Miller Aeron size A). When a listing prints no rating, assume that band and ask.

Is a 300 lb weight limit enough for a 280 lb person?

It is inside the number, but with 20 lb to spare every time you sit down, lean back or drop into the seat. Buy at least 30 lb under the rating: for a 280 lb person that means a chair rated to 330 lb or more, and there are five here at that figure for under $900.

Does BIFMA certified mean a chair is heavy duty?

Not on its own. BIFMA publishes more than one seating standard, including a separate large-occupant office chair standard, ANSI/BIFMA X5.11, and a large-occupant lounge standard with 400 lb and 600 lb test tiers. A listing that says only 'BIFMA' has not told you which one, so read the maker's own rating and, if a standard is named, which.
