Heavy Duty Office Chairs: Weight Limits, Side by Side
A BIFMA-tested chair may be tested to a 275 lb basis. There is a separate standard for larger occupants, and a listing need not tell you which one it used.

Search for a heavy duty office chair and you get a wall of numbers: 300 lb, 350 lb, 400 lb, 500 lb. What a listing need not give you is the thing that would let you compare two of them — which test those numbers came out of.
There is an answer, and it is more interesting than the numbers.
There are two office chair standards, not one
ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 is the general-purpose office chair standard. A testing laboratory describes its purpose as providing “a common basis for manufacturers, specifiers, and users to evaluate the safety, durability, and structural adequacy of general-purpose office chairs,” and describes the tests as designed around a 275 lb occupant, the 95th percentile male. Another lab puts the same basis as “a 125 kg occupant at the 95th percentile, over a ten-year single-shift working life.”
ANSI/BIFMA X5.11 is a different standard: General Purpose Large Occupant Office Chairs – Tests, released 5 January 2015. The same lab describes its scope as “individuals having a corporal mass greater than 253 lbs and up to 400 lbs which equates to the 99,5th percentile male in the US.”
So “BIFMA tested” on a listing is not one claim. It is two possible claims, and the general-purpose one is the 275 lb basis.
A note on where these figures come from. The standards themselves are paywalled and we have not read them. Everything above is how testing laboratories publicly describe the standards they run — we are citing the labs, not the documents, and that is as far as our sourcing goes.
What X5.11 actually changes
This is where it stops being a label and starts being a set of forces. The same lab lists the increases from X5.1 to X5.11:

X5.11 also adds a minimum seat width requirement and a structural durability cyclic test that X5.1 does not have, and removes three footrest tests that X5.1 requires.
Look at the swivel row in particular. The swivel mechanism is cycled under a seat load of 250 lb in one standard and 400 lb in the other. That is not a stricter version of the same test — it is a different question being asked of the same part.
For scale, the X5.1 cycle counts a lab publishes are 120,000 swivel rotations, 300,000 tilt cycles, 100,000 seat impacts and 120,000 backrest cycles. Those are the numbers behind “durability” in X5.1. For three of those tests — swivel, tilt and seat impact — the lab’s comparison shows X5.11 applying higher loads. What cycle counts X5.11 itself asks for is not something the lab pages state, and we have not read the standard.
What this does and does not let you conclude
It does not mean X5.1 chairs fail at 276 lb. A standard is a test basis, not a cliff edge, and the two ranges quoted above actually overlap — X5.1 is described around 275 lb, X5.11 starts at “greater than 253 lbs.” Anyone telling you one standard hands over to the other at a specific weight is inventing the handover.
It does mean a bare capacity number is weak evidence. “Rated to 400 lb” is a sentence the manufacturer wrote. “Tested to ANSI/BIFMA X5.11” names a protocol someone else defined, with published loads. The second is checkable in a way the first is not.
And it means the absence is informative. A chair sold specifically for larger occupants, by a manufacturer that had the option of testing to the large-occupant standard, that cites only X5.1 or says only “BIFMA compliant” — the listing is not telling you what was tested.
What to look for on a listing
- Which standard is named. X5.1, X5.11, or nothing. “BIFMA certified” with no number is the least informative of the three.
- Who did the testing. A named laboratory is worth more than an unattributed claim.
- Whether the capacity and the standard agree. A stated 400 lb capacity alongside a citation of X5.1 is two claims that sit oddly together; it is a fair thing to ask a seller about.
- Seat width, stated in inches or millimetres. X5.11 has a minimum; a chair that does not publish its seat width has not answered the question.
- What the warranty covers and at what weight. A capacity claim and a warranty limit are different documents, and they do not always match.

Does BIFMA tested mean a chair is rated for my weight?
Not on its own. The general-purpose office chair standard, ANSI/BIFMA X5.1, is described by testing labs as being based on a 275 lb occupant at the 95th percentile male. A separate standard, X5.11, exists for larger occupants. A listing that says only 'BIFMA tested' has not told you which one.

Is a stated weight capacity the same as a tested one?
No. A number printed on a listing is the manufacturer's statement. A standard is a test protocol. The useful question is not 'what number does it say' but 'which standard was it tested to, and who says so'.
