The swimsuit that fits your hips flattens your bust and the straps dig in, or the one that holds your bust hangs loose at the waist. Going up in size for the bust does not fix that: on Miraclesuit’s size chart, a regular 18 gives you 3.5 more inches of bust than a 14, and 3.5 more of waist and hips with it, while its DD-cup version of every size from 8 to 18 adds the same 3.5 inches of bust at the same waist and hips (our arithmetic). Take your measurements first
You need your bust, waist and hips in inches; if you have not taken them, see how to measure your bust, waist and hips. Miraclesuit measures hips around the fullest part of the low waist, about 7 to 8 inches below the natural waist. For a one-piece, add your torso length: Andie measures it from the shoulder, where a bra strap sits, to between your legs.
Then find the size that fits your waist and hips, and compare its bust figure to yours. On Miraclesuit’s chart, a bust about 3.5 inches over that figure points to its DD-cup sizes, about 4.5 inches over to its DDD-cup sizes, since those are the gaps in every row from 8 to 18 (our arithmetic and our reading). More than about 4.5 inches over, or a bust past the DDD 18’s 49.5 inches while your waist and hips still fit an 18 or smaller, and a bra-sized suit is the closer match: Curvy Kate sells its swimwear by UK bra size (our suggestion).
The six picks
Miraclesuit DD-Cup or DDD-Cup Oceanus One Piece, Abanico
The pick if your bust is a step or two ahead of your dress size. Miraclesuit’s DD-cup chart keeps the waist and hips of its regular sizes and adds 3.5 inches at the bust, so a DD-cup 14 has a 45-inch bust over a 34-inch waist and 44-inch hips, where the regular 18 with the same bust is 37.5 and 47.5 (our arithmetic). The same Abanico print comes in DDD-cup sizes, which add 4.5 inches instead. The Oceanus has soft cups, adjustable straps and draped fabric over the tummy, in the brand’s Miratex control fabric.
Drawbacks: Both start at 10 and stop at 18, while the DD- and DDD-cup charts start at 8; at 18 the chart’s busts are 48.5 inches (DD) and 49.5 (DDD). Soft cups, with no underwire listed, and hand wash only.
Curvy Kate Holiday Check Non Wired Swimsuit
The pick if you know your bra size and dress-sized suits do not fit your bust. Curvy Kate’s US store lists its swimwear in UK sizing, here bands 30 to 40 and cups DD/E to J/JJ, 30 sizes in all. Ties at the hips let you adjust the length, a drawstring at the neckline changes the shape and coverage, and the straps are fully adjustable. On the brand’s conversion table, UK and US band numbers match, while a UK J is a US M and a UK JJ a US N; see our bra size conversion chart for more brands.
Drawbacks: Sizes are UK bra sizes, so convert your cup first. Cups come in doubled sizes such as F/FF and G/GG, and orders ship from the brand’s UK warehouse.
Curvy Kate Wild Horizon Tankini Top + High Waist Bikini Brief
The pick if your bust and hips sit in different sizes. The top is sold by bra size, bands 30 to 44 and cups DD/E to J/JJ, and its drawstring sides let you set how long it sits on your body; the high waist brief is sold separately in letter sizes, which the brand’s knicker table maps to US 4 to 6 at S up to US 20 to 22 at 2XL. Buy each part in its own size, a 36G/GG top with an XL brief, for example (our example).
Drawbacks: Two sizes to choose, and the brief stops at a 2XL, US 20 to 22 on the brand’s table. The top is non-wired and pulls over, with no fastening.
Andie Amalfi One Piece, Eco Nylon, Long Torso
The pick if you have a long torso. Andie sells the Amalfi in a Classic and a Long Torso length at the same $112, and for a torso measuring over 30 inches, its fit note suggests you may prefer the Long Torso. It has a scoop neck and adjustable straps. Andie’s chart puts 3X at a 50-inch bust, 46-inch waist and 54-inch low hip, a US 20; between two sizes, it suggests the smaller one if you are in the water a lot and the larger one for comfort in the sun.
Drawbacks: 3X is the top size, a 50-inch bust and 54-inch low hip on Andie’s chart. Andie’s product data rates its bust support as medium, so a very full bust may want a cup-sized pick above (our suggestion).
Miraclesuit Plus Size Sanibel One Piece
The pick if your waist and hips are past Miraclesuit’s size 18 too, and you want an underwire. The Sanibel comes in 16W to 24W, which Miraclesuit’s Plus Size table puts at a 47-inch bust, 42.75-inch waist and 48.5-inch hips for 16W, up to 54.5, 50.25 and 56 inches for 24W. It has an underwire bra, a sweetheart neckline, adjustable straps and draped fabric over the tummy, and the brand files it under Support Full Bust. It comes in four colors.
Drawbacks: No cup options in the plus range, and the Plus Size table’s bust runs only 4.25 inches over the waist at 16W, against 7.5 on the regular 18 (our arithmetic), so a much fuller bust may do better by bra size (our suggestion), though Curvy Kate's bands stop at 40 on the one-piece and 44 on the tankini top. Hand wash only.
Magicsuit Plus Size Celine Swim Dress
The plus size swim dress pick, if you want more cover over the bottom and upper thigh (our reading). The Celine has a skirted leg cut and side ties you can untie for more bottom coverage, a V-neck, adjustable straps and a full straight back, with wireless soft-cup support. It runs 16W to 24W, the same range as the Sanibel.
Drawbacks: Wireless soft cups, no underwire (the Sanibel has one), and no cup options. Two colors, Black and Mars.

How to choose
- Bust more than 4.5 inches over the bust figure for your waist-and-hip size? Go by bra size at Curvy Kate (our suggestion). Look at the Sanibel or Celine when your waist and hips are also past Miraclesuit’s 18, 37.5 and 47.5 inches; its 16W starts at 42.75 and 48.5, and between the two, take 16W (our suggestion).
- Hips two sizes off your bust? Take the separates: the tankini top by bra size, the brief by the knicker table.
- Torso over 30 inches by Andie’s method? Start with the Amalfi Long Torso. Miraclesuit’s chart measures torso differently, as a loop from the shoulder through the legs and back over the bust, so do not compare the two numbers.

- Miraclesuit gives two sizing tips. The note above each size table says the fit is snug and recommends going up one size from your dress size; the Fit & Size note says many customers order their usual size, with sizing up if you are between sizes or want a less snug fit. Pick the row that fits your measurements, and if you fall between two rows, take the larger, which both notes allow (our suggestion).

How do I know if I need a long torso swimsuit?
