The sneakers are already a Wide, and by mid-afternoon the sides are still pressing on your little toes. So you order the next width up, the one marked X-Wide or Extra Wide, and assume it means the same letter everywhere: it does not. Orthofeet’s men’s chart, and the X-Wide on the New Balance and Brooks listings at Zappos, put that word at 4E, while Propét’s chart puts its X Wide at 3E. Below are five men’s sneakers sold past a 2E, $64.95 to $145, each with the width letters it is actually sold in, who it suits and what is wrong with it.

The short answer

Pick Best for Price (reference) Widths past 2E US men’s sizes (maker’s shop)
New Balance 608v5 The cheapest 6E of the five $64.95 at Zappos 4E, 6E — (priced at a retailer)
Brooks Addiction Walker 2 A leather walker in 4E $140 at Zappos 4E — (priced at a retailer)
Orthofeet Edgewater A knit sneaker with room for orthotics $119 4E; 6E in Black only (Orthofeet’s chart) 7 to 15
FitVille Rebound Core V1 The cheapest 6E here bought from the brand’s own shop $79.00 4E; 6E in Black or Jet Black 8 to 16
Propét Stability Walker Feet between 4E and 6E, sizes to 17 $145 3E, 5E 7 to 17

Extra Wide is a word; order the letter

The word on the width button changes from brand to brand, so compare letters. If you are not sure which letter you wear now, the shoe width sizes guide lays out what B, D, 2E and 4E mean on men’s and women’s charts. Here is what each of the five calls its widths.

Four of the five put 4E behind X-Wide or Extra Wide. Propét’s ladder runs one letter lower at each word: its Wide is a single E, its X Wide is 3E and its XX Wide is 5E. EE and 2E are two ways of writing the same width. So a man who is comfortable in a 4E elsewhere has two Propét choices, 3E or 5E, and no exact match (our reading).

The five

New Balance 608v5

$64.95 at Zappos (White/Navy)Price for reference onlyD, EE, 4E, 6E at Zappos · mixed leather and mesh · 14 oz (size 11, 4E)View it on the brand's site →

The pick for the least money into a 6E: Zappos lists it in D, EE, 4E and 6E. Zappos describes it as a men’s training shoe with a mixed leather and breathable mesh upper, an ABZORB heel panel and a PU foam insert, built on New Balance’s MX-001 last, and a Zappos staff answer on the listing (2019) says the insole is removable. Zappos lists 14 oz, measured on a size 11 in 4E. At $64.95 in White/Navy it costs less than half of the Brooks or the Propét (our arithmetic).

Drawbacks: Zappos's review summary says the size gets mixed feedback, with some buyers finding it too small. It is a training shoe in leather and mesh, so it looks sportier than the leather Brooks or Propét (our reading). The price and widths here are one retailer's listing.

Brooks Addiction Walker 2

$140 at ZapposPrice for reference onlyMen's B, D, EE, 4E at Zappos · leather upper · 12 mm differential · removable insoleView it on the brand's site →

The pick if you want a plain leather lace-up in 4E. The listing at Zappos describes a supple leather upper, a traditional lace-up, a breathable mesh lining and a removable insole, and lists the men’s version in four widths from B to 4E. Its heel-to-toe differential is 12 mm, against 11 mm on the Propét and 17.4 mm on the Orthofeet; the New Balance and FitVille listings do not print one. The listing calls it a modern walking shoe “ideal for both long and casual walks”.

Drawbacks: Zappos lists widths up to 4E, so if a 4E still presses, look at the three 6E picks instead. It is built for pronation control, with what the listing calls a robust, dual density post at the medial arch, which is more structure than you may want if your feet do not roll in (our reading). Zappos lists 15 oz, measured on a size 10 in D.

Orthofeet Edgewater

$119Price for reference onlyMedium, Wide, X-Wide, XX-Wide (D, 2E, 4E, 6E on Orthofeet's men's chart) · US 7 to 15 · stretch knit upper · 12.7 oz (size 9M) · 17.4 mm dropView it on the brand's site →

The pick if you wear your own orthotics. Orthofeet says all its shoes are made with extra depth and come with removable orthotic insoles ¼ inch thick that can be replaced with custom orthotics, and the Edgewater listing describes a breathable stretch knit upper, a relaxed fit, extra depth and adjustable arch support. On the Black listing all four widths are listed in every size from 7 to 15, and the shop names XX-Wide as a width only some of its shoes come in.

Drawbacks: The product page names its widths in words only, so you have to read the men's chart to know that X-Wide is a 4E and XX-Wide a 6E. XX-Wide (6E) is sold only in Black; the Taupe, Blue and Gray versions stop at X-Wide (4E). Sizes stop at a 15, with no half sizes above a 12.

FitVille Rebound Core V1

$79.00Price for reference onlyWide/2E, Extra Wide/4E, XX-Wide/6E · US 8 to 16 · suede upper · removable insolesView it on the brand's site →

The pick for a 6E at under $80, bought from the brand’s own shop. FitVille sells it in 2E, 4E and 6E from a US 8 to a 16, and also lists a separate 6E page in Jet Black. The listing describes a suede upper, removable insoles with arch support, a wide toe box and a high instep.

Drawbacks: 6E comes in two of the four colours on this listing, Black and Jet Black; Army Green and Majolica Blue stop at 4E. The details block on both its pages still reads Width: Wide/2E and Extra Wide/4E, so go by the width selector. Sizes start at a US 8, and the listed weight of about 320 grams does not say which size it was weighed in.

Propét Stability Walker

$145Price for reference onlyB, D, E, 3E, 5E · US 7 to 17 · leather or nubuck · 1.5 in heel · 11 mm dropView it on the brand's site →

The pick if a 4E is a touch tight but you want less room than a 6E, or you need a 16 or 17. Propét lists it in five widths, Narrow (B) to XX Wide (5E), and in US 7 to 17. The listing describes a leather or nubuck walking shoe with a roomy toe box, arch-supporting foam insoles with a memory foam topper, a 1.5-inch heel and an 11 mm heel drop, and says it fits true to size. Propét also says the footbed can be removed to accommodate custom orthotics.

Drawbacks: Its widest is 5E, not 6E, and there is no 4E: Propét's X Wide is a 3E. At $145 it is the most expensive of the five.

How to pick between them

By width. If a 2E pinches at the sides, four of the five sell a 4E: the New Balance, Brooks, Orthofeet and FitVille; the Propét’s 3E is a half step in between. If a 4E still presses, three go to 6E: the New Balance, the Orthofeet in Black and the FitVille in Black or Jet Black. The Propét’s 5E sits between 4E and 6E.

By length. Of the three makers’ shops here, Propét lists the Stability Walker to a US 17, FitVille the Rebound Core to a 16 and Orthofeet the Edgewater to a 15. For the New Balance and Brooks, check the size run on the retailer listing you buy from.

By what goes inside. If you wear your own orthotics, start with the Orthofeet, the one whose maker states both extra depth and a removable insole and gives its thickness. The Brooks and FitVille listings describe removable insoles too, Propét says the Stability Walker’s footbed can be removed for custom orthotics, and a Zappos staff answer says the New Balance insole comes out.

Before you order

  • Measure first, late in the day. Our guide on how to measure foot size at home walks through it with a sheet of paper and a ruler, and explains why everyday shoes are best measured in the evening.
  • Pick size and width together. On all five listings width is a separate selector from size, and Zappos only shows a delivery date once both are chosen.
  • Order the letter, not the word. A 4E in one shop is X-Wide; at Propét the nearest are X Wide (3E) and XX Wide (5E).
  • Try them indoors first on a clean floor, and read the seller’s return terms before ordering (our suggestion).

Where these numbers come from

Widths, descriptions and prices, and sizes for the three brands’ own shops, are from the Orthofeet, FitVille and Propét product pages and from Zappos for the New Balance and Brooks, read on 13 October 2026. The width letters are from Orthofeet’s and Propét’s men’s width charts and from the width selectors on the other three listings. Prices drift; check the listing before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What width is extra wide in men's shoes?

On four of these five listings it is 4E. Orthofeet's men's chart puts X-wide at 4E, and Zappos lists the X-Wide of the New Balance 608v5 and the men's Brooks Addiction Walker 2 as 4E. Propét is the exception among these five: its men's chart puts X Wide at 3E and XX Wide at 5E.

Which men's sneakers come in 6E?

Of the five here, three: the New Balance 608v5 (6E listed as XX-Wide at Zappos), the Orthofeet Edgewater (XX-Wide, 6E on Orthofeet's men's chart, in Black only) and the FitVille Rebound Core V1 (XX-Wide/6E, in Black and Jet Black). The Propét Stability Walker stops at 5E, and Zappos lists the Brooks Addiction Walker 2 up to 4E.

Which of these come in sizes above a US 15?

Of the three whose makers' own shops list sizes here, two: Propét lists the Stability Walker up to a US 17 and FitVille lists the Rebound Core V1 up to a 16. The Orthofeet Edgewater stops at a 15. The New Balance and Brooks are priced at a retailer, so check the size run on the listing you buy from.

Can I put my own orthotics in these?

Orthofeet says all its shoes have extra depth and removable orthotic insoles ¼ inch thick that can be swapped for custom orthotics. The Brooks Addiction Walker 2 listing at Zappos and the FitVille Rebound Core V1 listing both describe removable insoles, and Propét says the Stability Walker's footbed can be removed to accommodate custom orthotics. For the New Balance 608v5, a Zappos staff answer on the listing (2019) says the insole is removable.
