Wide Calf Black Boots: 6 Picks With Calf Sizes in Inches
Six wide calf black boots, flat to thigh-high, from Duo Boots and Journee: the calf size in inches each lists, shaft and heel height, shoe sizes and price.

The zip stalls halfway up your calf, or it closes and the shaft is digging in by lunch. On Journee’s chart, going up in shoe size buys little calf room: the Wide column adds 1.5 inches in all from a US 5 to a US 12, and a Wide runs anywhere from 16.5 to 18 inches (our reading). So each of the six black boots below, flat to thigh-high and $79.99 to $284, comes with the calf size in inches its brand prints: measure your calf, then match the number.

Measure your calf first
Both brands size from the fullest part of the calf. Duo’s size guide says to measure with bare legs, put the tape around the widest part, repeat on both legs and, if the two differ, “take the average of the two”. Journee’s boot size chart carries the footnote “Measure the fullest part of the calf for best results.”
Duo’s rule for in-between sizes is to take the lower one, because its boots have “an extra 3cm of stretch built in”, and 3 cm is about 1.2 inches (our conversion). A 43 cm (16.9 in) calf, for example, falls between Duo’s 41 cm (16.1 in) and 44 cm (17.3 in) sizes, so by that rule it is the 41 (our worked example).

How Duo and Journee give the number
Duo Boots sells calf size as a selector separate from shoe size. On each of the three Duo listings below it reads 11.8, 12.6, 13.8, 15.0, 16.1, 17.3, 18.5, 19.7 and 20.9 inches (30, 32, 35, 38, 41, 44, 47, 50 and 53 cm on Duo’s listings that show centimetres). Duo’s size guide still says its calf sizes run “30cm to 50cm” (19.7 in); the product-page selectors list nine, up to 53 cm (20.9 in), and the figures here are the selectors’. The guide also says its boots in calf sizes of 44 cm (17.3 in) and up have a wider footbed.
Journee sells a boot in Regular, Wide and X-Wide listings, and its chart gives the calf in inches by US shoe size, so the number rises as the shoe size does. Each listing’s own figure, Journee says, was “taken using a size 6”.
| US shoe size | Medium calf | Wide calf | X-Wide calf |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 to 6 | 16 | 16.5 | 17 |
| 6.5 to 7 | 16 | 17 | 18 |
| 7.5 | 16.5 | 17 | 18 |
| 8 to 9 | 16.5 | 17.5 | 18.5 |
| 9.5 to 12 | 17 | 18 | 19 |
Two things follow from that chart (our reading). A Medium at a US 12 is 17 inches, more than a Wide at a US 5 to 6, so read the row for your own shoe size. And its largest figure, 19 inches, is below Duo’s 19.7 and 20.9 inch sizes.
The six
Duo Boots Haltham Standard
The pick for a plain flat black boot. Like the other two Duo picks it offers nine calf sizes, the widest span of the six at 11.8 to 20.9 in. The listing calls it an “Everyday flat knee-high boot” in smooth black calf leather with a soft black nylon lining, a memory foam insole, an internal elasticated stretch panel and an anti-slip sole with a diamond pattern, on a 1.4-inch heel. The 15.0-inch shaft is the Standard height; the same boot also comes as Petite (14.2 in) and Tall (16.5 in).
Drawbacks: At $238 it costs about three times the $79.99 Journee picks (our arithmetic). The page says eight calf sizes in its description and nine in its features list; the selector shows nine. Shoe sizes stop at US 12.
Duo Boots Dalia Tall
The pick for a mid heel and a taller shaft. The listing describes a “Sleek mid-heel knee-high boot” in smooth European-sourced black calf leather with a stacked black heel, a memory-foam insole and an internal elastic stretch panel for a “close-to-the-leg” fit, and says its nine calf sizes include wide and extra-wide fits. Duo’s guide says boot height “determines where the widest part of your calf will sit”, and to find yours, measure from the back of your knee to the bottom of your foot.
Drawbacks: At $284 it is the dearest of the six. Tall only suits you if your leg height does, since the same boot comes in Petite (14.2 in) and Standard (15.0 in), and its 2.6-inch heel is the highest of the three Duo picks.
Duo Boots Charlotte
The pick for a riding-boot look. The listing calls it a “Timeless equestrian-inspired knee-high boot”, with an antique dark silver buckle and loop, a soft black nylon lining, a memory-foam insole, a hidden internal stretch panel and a durable rubber sole with stitched detailing. Of the three Duo picks it has the shortest shaft, at 14.6 inches.
Drawbacks: The listing gives one shaft height, 14.6 inches, and no Petite or Tall option, so a long leg may find it ends low (our reading). It costs the same $238 as the flat Haltham and lists the same nine calf sizes, so between the two the calf choice is the same; what changes is the look and the shaft, one 14.6-inch height here against the Haltham's Petite, Standard and Tall (our reading).
Journee Jester, X-Wide Calf
The pick for the lowest price and a slouchy shape. The listing sells it in black faux suede with “chunky buckles”, a side zipper, a padded insole and a 1½-inch hidden wedge heel, and gives the X-Wide calf as 17½ inches. The same boot has a Wide Calf listing at the same $79.99 with a 16-inch calf.
Drawbacks: The 17½ inches is a size 6 figure, and the listing says measurements “may vary slightly by size”. Journee's chart puts an X-Wide at 17 inches in a size 6 and 19 in a 9.5 or larger, so ask Journee before ordering if your number is close. At 13 inches it has the shortest shaft of the six.
Journee Kaison, X-Wide Calf
The one over-the-knee pick. The listing calls it “a thigh-high boot” in slouchy faux suede on a 3-inch block heel, with a side zipper, a round toe and a “Wide Footbed with Padded Insole”. Of the three Journee picks it is the only one whose Details block, on the X-Wide listing, names a wide footbed. The same boot has a Wide Calf listing at the same $89.99, with a 15¾-inch calf.
Drawbacks: Its 16 inches is only ¼ inch more than the Wide listing's 15¾ (our arithmetic), and 1 inch under the 17 that Journee's chart gives for an X-Wide at a size 6, so check both numbers. The Details block gives the 24-inch shaft with no starting point. At $89.99 it is the dearest of the three Journee picks.
Journee Sonny, Wide Calf
The pick for a casual everyday boot under $100. The listing describes a knee-high boot with “buckle detail”, a 1½-inch block heel, an inside zip, a round toe and a 4 mm Journee Comfort System insole, in vegan leather. Its calf and top circumference is 16½ inches, the same figure Journee’s chart gives for a Wide at a size 6.
Drawbacks: This is the Wide listing, and its 16½ inches is a size 6 figure; in a 9.5 or larger the chart's Wide column reads 18 inches. The Details block lists no stretch panel.

How to choose
- Up to 17 inches: Duo’s sizes from 11.8 to 17.3 inches cover it. Among the Journee boots, compare your number with each listing’s figure and with your shoe size’s row on the chart, where a Wide covers 16.5 to 18 inches (our reading).
- 17 to 19 inches: Duo’s 17.3 and 18.5 inch sizes, or a Journee X-Wide, whose chart column runs 17 to 19 inches by shoe size; check the listing’s own figure too (our reading).
- Over 19 inches: Duo’s 19.7 and 20.9 inch sizes (per its product-page selectors) are above anything on Journee’s chart, which stops at 19.
- By shape: flat, the Haltham; mid heel, the Dalia; riding look, the Charlotte; slouchy, the Jester; over the knee, the Kaison; a casual buckle boot, the Sonny.
- By budget: the three Journee boots are $79.99 to $89.99, and the three Duo boots $238 to $284.
Before you order
- Read the row for your shoe size on Journee’s chart, not just the figure on the listing, which Journee says was taken at a size 6.
- Choose the shaft height with your leg in mind. At Duo, Petite, Standard and Tall change where the widest part of your calf sits.
- If your foot is wide too, Duo says all its boots have “a medium width around the ball of the foot”, with the wider footbed from its 44 cm calf size up. Shoe width sizes explains the letters, and how to measure foot size covers length.
- Read the exchange terms. Duo’s guide says you can exchange for a new size in its “fast, free, and easy exchange process”; read each store’s returns page before you buy.
If you also need dressier shoes for wide feet, wide width heels covers seven. More fit guides are in clothing and fit.
Where these numbers come from
Prices, calf sizes, shaft and heel heights, shoe sizes and quoted phrases are copied from each brand’s own product pages, Duo’s size guide and Journee’s boot size chart, read on 8 October 2026 in US dollars. Duo’s prices are the figure shown on its US pages and Journee’s the sale price on its pages, in each case without a code. The 3 cm conversion, the worked example and the price comparison are our arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a wide calf in boots?
It depends on the brand. Journee's boot size chart gives Wide Calf as 16.5 to 18 inches and X-Wide Calf as 17 to 19 inches, rising with shoe size from a US 5 to a US 12. Duo Boots sells nine calf sizes from 11.8 to 20.9 inches per its product-page selectors, and its Dalia and Charlotte listings say the nine include wide and extra-wide fits.
Can I get wide calf over-the-knee boots in black?
Of the six picks, one is over the knee: Journee's Kaison, a thigh-high boot in black faux suede with a 24-inch shaft and a 3-inch block heel. Its listings give the calf as 15¾ inches (Wide) or 16 inches (X-Wide) at a size 6. The three Duo picks are knee-high, with shafts of 14.6 to 16.5 inches.
Does the calf measurement change with shoe size?
On Journee's chart it does: the Wide column goes from 16.5 inches at a US 5 to 6 up to 18 inches at a US 9.5 to 12, and its listings say their figures were taken at a size 6. At Duo, calf size is its own selector next to shoe size, and its size guide says "Your calf size won't change between styles".
Do these boots have stretch in the shaft?
Duo says all its boots have built-in stretch panels that accommodate up to an additional 3 cm (about 1.2 inches, our conversion), and its Haltham, Dalia and Charlotte listings each name a stretch panel. The Details blocks of the three Journee listings here do not mention one.
