Men's Suit Size Chart: Jacket Sizes 34 to 66, Short to Long
What a suit size like 54R or 3X means, the four numbers to measure, and four sellers' charts from a 34 to a 68 inch chest, with jacket lengths by height.

You know your chest is somewhere in the mid-fifties, but the size menu offers 54R, 3X and 56 Tall and doesn’t say which is yours. Ordering a matched suit by the jacket number does not settle it either: on The Suit Depot’s chart, every jacket size from 34 to 52 lists a waist 6 inches smaller, so the 52 row reads a 46 waist. Below is what each part of a suit size means, the four numbers to measure, and four sellers’ charts from a 34 to a 68-inch chest, with jacket lengths by height and the waist each chart lists against each chest.
The short answer
| Your chest | Numbered jacket | Mr. Big & Tall | Westport Big & Tall |
|---|---|---|---|
| 46 in | 46 | 1X (46–48) | 1XB (46–48) |
| 50 in | 50 | 2X (50–52) | 2XB (50–52) |
| 54 in | 54 | 3X (54–56) | 3XB (54–56) |
| 58 in | 58 | 4X (58–60) | 4XB (58–60) |
| 62 in | 62 | 5X (62–64) | 5XB (62–64) |
| 66 in | 66 | 6X (66–68) | 6XB (66–68) |
The “Numbered jacket” column rests on The Suit Depot’s chart, where the size is your chest in inches (34 to 52), and on Westport’s sport coat listings sold by “Chest Size” up to 60”. Mr. Big & Tall lists numbered suit separate jackets from 46 to 66; reading those numbers, and so the 62 and 66 rows, as chest inches is our reading. Mr. Big & Tall prints no unit on its chart. The length comes from your height, in the length section below.
Reading a suit size like 54R
A suit size has two parts, and a big and tall store may use a third system.
- The number is the chest. On The Suit Depot’s suit size guide, the US suit size and the chest measurement are the same figure in all ten rows, 34 to 52. Charles Tyrwhitt heads the same column “YOUR CHEST SIZE (UP TO)”, so a 45-inch chest is a 46 there (our reading).
- The letter is the length. Short, Regular, Long and Extra-long follow your height; Haggar’s size menu writes them S, R and L. Mr. Big & Tall writes REG, TALL and X-TALL after the number instead.
- European sizes are a different number, and not one per US size. The Suit Depot’s European column reads 46 for both a US 34 and 36, 48 for both 38 and 40, and 56 for both 50 and 52.
- Big and tall letters (1X to 6X) cover a two-inch chest range each, on the charts in the big and tall section.
Take four numbers first
- Chest. Westport’s chart says to use the chest “for suit or jacket size”, and to “Measure over a shirt. Tape should be up under arms and straight across the shoulder blades.” The Suit Depot says to wear “a tshirt or shirt that fits close to your body”. How to measure chest has the full method.
- Waist, in the place your chart means. The two big and tall stores measure it in different places. Westport: “Measure over your shirt at the point your slacks are normally worn.” Mr. Big & Tall: “Measure around your natural waistline, which is just under your ribs.” If your stomach sits below your ribs, take both numbers and use each one with its own store’s chart (our suggestion).
- Inseam, for the pants. Separates are sold by waist and leg length together (52W-30L at Mr. Big & Tall). Its method: “Measure from crotch to the bottom of your foot.”
- Height, and sleeve if the chart prints one. Height picks the length. For the sleeve, Westport’s route: “With your elbow bent, measure from the middle of your back, directly below the neck, across the shoulders and elbow to the wrist.”

Chest 34 to 52: numbered sizes
The Letter column here is The Suit Depot’s garment size (S to XXL), not a length.
| Letter | US suit size | Chest | Waist | European size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 34 | 34 | 28 | 46 |
| S | 36 | 36 | 30 | 46 |
| M | 38 | 38 | 32 | 48 |
| M | 40 | 40 | 34 | 48 |
| L | 42 | 42 | 36 | 50 |
| L | 44 | 44 | 38 | 52 |
| XL | 46 | 46 | 40 | 54 |
| XL | 48 | 48 | 42 | 55 |
| XXL | 50 | 50 | 44 | 56 |
| XXL | 52 | 52 | 46 | 56 |
Charles Tyrwhitt’s US chart also prints the jacket’s own chest. In its Classic fit suit jackets, the garment chest is 3 to 3.5 inches more than the chest the size is for: 53 inches for a 50 (our arithmetic). Its Classic suit jackets stop at 50 and its Slim fit at 46. Above The Suit Depot’s 52, use the big and tall charts below.
Chest 46 to 68: big and tall sizes
Both big and tall charts here print a chest, a waist and a sleeve for each letter. Mr. Big & Tall (on its Canadian site) has one chart for sport and suit jackets; Westport Big & Tall prints one size chart, in a Tall and a Big table, and says to use the chest from it for suit or jacket size.
| Mr. Big & Tall size | Chest | Waist | Sleeve | Westport size | Chest | Waist | Sleeve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1X | 46–48 | 44–46 | 35–35½ | 1XB | 46–48 | 42–44 | 32/33 |
| 2X | 50–52 | 48–50 | 35½–36 | 2XB | 50–52 | 46–48 | 33/34 |
| 3X | 54–56 | 52–54 | 36–36½ | 3XB | 54–56 | 50–52 | 34/35 |
| 4X | 58–60 | 56–58 | 36½–37 | 4XB | 58–60 | 54–56 | 34/35 |
| 5X | 62–64 | 60–62 | 37–37½ | 5XB | 62–64 | 58–60 | 35/36 |
| 6X | 66–68 | 64–66 | 37½–38 | 6XB | 66–68 | 62–64 | 35/36 |
- Same chest, different waist. Each letter covers the same chest at both stores, but Westport’s Big rows put the waist 2 inches lower than Mr. Big & Tall’s (our arithmetic).
- Tall sizes keep the chest. From 2XT up, each tall size on both charts prints the same chest as the big size with the same number (2XT, 2X and 2XB are all 50–52), with a longer sleeve.
- Numbered jackets exist above 52. Mr. Big & Tall’s suit separate jackets list 46 and 48 in X-Tall only, 50 to 64 in Regular and Tall, and 66 in Regular only. Haggar’s big and tall J.M. Haggar Premium Stretch jacket lists 50 to 60: Short in 50 and 52, Long in 50 to 56, Regular in all.
Length: Short, Regular, Long, Extra-long
| Length | The Suit Depot, your height | Mr. Big & Tall, your height |
|---|---|---|
| Short | 5’4” to 5’7” | Not on chart |
| Regular | 5’8” to 6’ | Regular sizing, up to 6’ |
| Long | 6’1” to 6’4” | Tall sizing, Long sleeve: 6’1” to 6’3” |
| Extra-long | 6’5” and up | Tall sizing, X-Long sleeve: 6’3” and above |
On Mr. Big & Tall’s chart, 6’3” sits at the end of the Long sleeve row and the start of the X-Long row, so at that height compare the sleeve lengths (our reading).
What the length changes, on Charles Tyrwhitt’s Classic chart, is the jacket’s sleeve and back length. Its sleeve is measured on the jacket from shoulder to cuff, so it is not comparable with the body sleeve you measured from the back of your neck; use it only to see the step between lengths. A 44 is a 25-inch sleeve in Short, 26 in Regular and 27 in Long; its back length is 30 inches in both Short and Regular and 31 in Long. Its Classic chart lists Short only in sizes 40 to 44.

The trousers: how far below the chest is the waist?
The three charts that print both a chest and a waist put them this far apart (our arithmetic from the rows). A suit cut to one of these rows assumes the same gap (our reading):
- The Suit Depot: 6 inches, in all ten rows (a 52 jacket, a 46 waist).
- Westport: 4 inches on its Big rows and 6 on its Tall rows.
- Mr. Big & Tall: 2 inches on both its regular and tall jacket rows.
If your waist is closer to your chest than your chart assumes, two ways out:
- A portly cut. The Suit Depot’s description of Portly: “Generous cut, suitable if your belly protrudes past your waist and your waist and chest measurements are within 3 inches of each other.” Two of Westport’s sport coats add Portly lengths (PORT-S, PORT-R, PORT-L).
- Separates. Mr. Big & Tall’s H-XTech suit separate pants run from a 38 to a 62 waist (one of its other pant styles stops at 54); from a 46 waist up the leg lengths listed are 30 and 32, and at 60 and 62 only 30. Big and tall suits has five suits sold this way.
Sport coats and blazers
A sport coat is sized the same way as a suit jacket on the two big and tall charts: Mr. Big & Tall’s chart is headed “Sport & Suit Jackets”, and Westport’s says to use the chest for “suit or jacket size”. In Westport’s sport coats and blazers collection on 17 October (39 listings, one of them a top coat), 22 were sold by “Chest Size” plus a length (Reg, Long, X-Long), 2 by a size labelled “Waist Size” (44” to 56”; check on the listing which measurement it means before ordering), and 15 by letter, LT to 5XB, among them its knit, suede and leather blazers.
One worked example
A 55-inch chest, a 52-inch waist (the same at the natural waist and where the pants sit), a 38-inch sleeve, a 31-inch inseam and a height of 6’2” (our reading throughout):
- Numbered: a 56 in Long (Mr. Big & Tall writes it 56 Tall). 55 falls between 54 and 56, and reading the number as “chest up to”, as Charles Tyrwhitt’s chart does, makes it a 56.
- Mr. Big & Tall letters: 3XT (chest 54–56, waist 52–54, Long sleeve 38–38½).
- Westport letters: its 3XB and 3XT both cover a 54–56 chest. It prints no heights, so choose by sleeve: a 38 sleeve is on the 3XT (38/39), not the 3XB (34/35). The 3XT’s waist row is 48–50, below this waist.
- Pants: a 52 waist, ordered on its own. Mr. Big & Tall’s H-XTech pants list 52W in 30L and 32L only, so a 31 inseam is between the two; ordering the 32 and having it hemmed is our suggestion.
Before you order
- Use the chart on the listing. Mr. Big & Tall notes that “Many of our products have size guide links on their product pages with sizing specs specific to their brand.”
- Check the size menu. A chart row is not a size you can buy: Mr. Big & Tall’s 46 and 48 suit separate jackets were X-Tall only.
- Read the returns page before paying.
Dress shirts to wear under the jacket are sized in the shirt size chart; more charts are in size guides.
Where these numbers come from
The chart figures above are copied from the sellers’ own size charts and size menus, read on 17 October 2026: The Suit Depot (transcribed from its chart image; we read its heights, printed like 5”4, as feet and inches), Charles Tyrwhitt’s US sizing guide, Mr. Big & Tall’s Canadian site, Westport Big & Tall, and Haggar’s product page. Mr. Big & Tall prints no unit; we read its figures as inches. The gaps between chest and waist, the row pairings and the worked example are our arithmetic and reading.
Frequently asked questions
What does 54R mean on a suit jacket?
A 54 jacket in a Regular length. On The Suit Depot's chart, which runs from 34 to 52, the US suit size and the chest measurement are the same number in every row, and Westport sells sport coats by "Chest Size" up to 60", so reading 54R as a 54-inch chest is our reading. The Suit Depot's Regular length is for 5'8" to 6'; Short is 5'4" to 5'7", Long 6'1" to 6'4" and Extra-long 6'5" and up.
What suit size is a 3X?
On Mr. Big & Tall's sport and suit jacket chart (no unit printed; we read it as inches), 3X is a 54 to 56 chest, and its tall version, 3XT, has the same chest with a longer sleeve. Westport Big & Tall's 3XB is also a 54 to 56 chest, with a 50 to 52 waist where Mr. Big & Tall's 3X lists 52 to 54.
What size suit pants come with a 52 jacket?
The Suit Depot's chart lists a 46 waist on the 52 row: each of its rows from 34 to 52 lists a waist 6 inches below the chest. The big and tall charts here list a waist 2 inches below the chest (Mr. Big & Tall) or 4 inches below (Westport's Big sizes). Those are body measurements, not a promise about which pants come with a jacket (our reading), so if your waist is closer to your chest than that, buy jacket and pants as separates.
Where do suit charts go past a 52 chest?
Of the four size charts in this guide, the two big and tall ones: Mr. Big & Tall's sport and suit jacket chart (no unit printed) and Westport Big & Tall's size chart both run to a 66 to 68 chest (6X and 6XB). The Suit Depot's chart stops at 52 and Charles Tyrwhitt's Classic suit jackets at 50.
