Big and Tall Suits: 5 Picks Sold as Separates, Chest to 66

Five big and tall suits sold as separates, so the jacket goes by chest and the pants by waist, with sizes to a 66 chest and 60 waist, lengths and prices.

Cover card reading “Big and Tall Suits: 5 Picks Sold as Separates, Chest to 66” over a close-up of hands fastening the button of a navy suit jacket

The jacket closes across your chest but the trousers won’t, or the trousers fit and the jacket hangs off your shoulders. That is what buying a suit by one number gets you: on one Kenneth Cole nested-suit chart, the pants come 6 to 7 inches smaller than the jacket’s chest size, so a 50 jacket arrives with a 44 pant. Each of the five suits below is sold as separates, jacket by chest and pants by waist, in sizes up to a 66 chest and a 60 waist, from $145 to $836 for the pair.

The short answer

Pick Best for Price (reference) Jacket sizes Pant waists
Oak Hill Perfect Fit (DXL) The biggest chest, to 66 $286 46 to 66, Regular and Long 38 to 60
Synrgy Machine Washable (DXL) A suit you wash at home $308 48 to 64, Regular and Long 42 to 60
J.M. Haggar Premium Stretch Five colors, and a Short length $250 50 to 60, Short to Long 44 to 60
Haggar Travel Performance The lowest price $145 50 to 58, Short to Long 44 to 58
Brooks Brothers Wool (DXL) An all-wool suit $836 46 to 60, three lengths 40, 46 to 54

Take three numbers first

  • Chest. A suit jacket’s size is a chest measurement in inches: on DXL’s suit jacket chart a 54R is for a 54-inch chest. How to measure chest shows where the tape goes.
  • Waist. DXL’s guide says to measure “where you normally wear your pants”, and pick the pant by that, not by the jacket.
  • Height, for the jacket length. DXL’s chart builds Short for 5’4” to 5’7”, Regular for 5’7½” to 6’ and Long for 6’1½” and taller. That leaves 6’ to 6’1½” between Regular and Long (our reading), so at that height compare sleeve lengths: the chart gives a sleeve range for each size. To take yours, DXL says to bend your elbow and measure from the middle of your back, just below the neck, across the shoulder and elbow to the wrist, then round up to an even number.

Two cautions. DXL’s chart stops at a 60 jacket, while some of its listings go higher, so above 60 ask before you order. And Haggar’s Fit Guide describes its big and tall classic fit as “generous in the arms and body”, but neither the guide nor the two Haggar listings here give a height for its S, R and L.

The five suits

Oak Hill Perfect Fit Jacket-Relaxer Suit (DXL)

$286 (jacket $198 + pants $88)Price for reference onlyJacket 46 to 66, Regular and Long · pants waist 38 to 60, inseam 30, 32 or 36 · 53% polyester, 43% wool, 4% elastane · dry clean · blackView it on the brand's site →

The pick for the biggest chest. The jacket’s size buttons run from 46 to 66, the widest span of the five, in Regular and Long. DXL says it is “designed to help keep alterations to a minimum”, with Jacket-Relaxer insets, stretch knit shoulder panels, sweat shields, a notched lapel, two buttons and a center back vent. The Perfect Fit flat-front pants come in waists 38 to 60, with a Waist-Relaxer waistband that stretches up to 4 inches, per the listing, and inseams of 30, 32 or 36; the listing says the 32 can be altered to 34. If you carry weight at the middle, the same jacket comes in an Executive Cut, also $198, “more generously proportioned through the midsection”; its listing showed sizes 50 to 60 in Regular only, with no 58.

Drawbacks: One color, black, on both listings. Sizes above 60 go past DXL's own suit jacket chart, so that chart prints no sleeve length for them. Neither listing names the other, unlike the Synrgy and Brooks Brothers pieces; we pair them by series name, black color and the same 53/43/4 fabric blend (our pairing).

Synrgy Machine Washable Modern-Fit Suit (DXL)

$308 (jacket $210 + pants $98)Price for reference onlyJacket 48 to 64, Regular and Long · pants waist 42 to 60, inseam 30, 32 or 34 · 66% polyester, 28% viscose, 6% spandex · machine wash cold, hang dry · navyView it on the brand's site →

The pick for a suit you can wash at home. Both pieces say to machine wash cold and hang to dry, and DXL says the pants were its “first-ever, MACHINE WASHABLE suit pants”. The jacket has a peak lapel, jacket-relaxer stretch knit panels, sweat shields, a ticket pocket and side vents, in sizes 48 to 64. The matching pants are flat-front, in waists 42 to 60 and inseams of 30, 32 or 34, and the listing says the 32 can be altered to 34.

Drawbacks: Navy only. The pants listing gives the waist give two ways: its description says the insets stretch up to 2 inches on each side, its feature list says they add up to 2 inches, so check with DXL if that matters. The pants are unlined.

J.M. Haggar Premium Stretch Suit, Big & Tall

$250 (jacket $170 + pants $79.99)Price for reference onlyJacket 50 to 60 · Short in 50 and 52, Long in 50 to 56, Regular in all · pants waist 44 to 60 · 64% polyester, 34% rayon, 2% spandex · dry clean · five colorsView it on the brand's site →

The pick for color choice. It comes in Chocolate, Dark Navy, Med Grey, Black and Dark Heather Grey, the most colors of the five, and with the Travel Performance suit below it is one of two picks with a Short length, in chests 50 and 52. Haggar describes a two-button classic-fit jacket with a notched lapel, flap pockets, a center vent and “a fully-lined, piped interior”. The flat-front pants have a hidden expandable waistband that the listing says expands up to 3 inches, in waists 44 to 60.

Drawbacks: The 58 and 60 jackets come in Regular only, and the pants' 34-inch inseam stops at a 54 waist (56 to 60 come in 30 or 32). The pants are $79.99 in four of the five colors; Dark Heather Grey is $47.98, and the 44 waist with a 29 inseam is $90 in every color.

Haggar Travel Performance Heather Twill Suit, Big & Tall

$145 (jacket $99.99 + pants $44.99)Price for reference onlyJacket 50 to 58 · Short in 50 and 52, Long in 50 to 56 · pants waist 44 to 58 · 100% polyester · wrinkle free · dry clean · blackView it on the brand's site →

The pick for the lowest price, about $105 less than the J.M. Haggar suit, the next cheapest (our arithmetic). Both pieces are 100% polyester, listed as wrinkle free and stretch, and the jacket is a two-button classic fit with a center vent. The matching pants are flat-front with a hidden expandable waistband and are listed as moisture wicking.

Drawbacks: Black only, and the narrowest size grid here: the jacket stops at 58, in Regular, and in the pants a 34 inseam comes only in 44 and 46 waists, with 52 to 58 in a 32 only. Despite the name, both listings say Dry Clean Only.

Brooks Brothers Wool Suit (DXL)

$836 (jacket $568 + pants $268)Price for reference onlyJacket 46 to 60 · Regular, Long and XL lengths on the light grey listing · pants waist 40 and 46 to 54 · 100% wool · dry clean · light grey shownView it on the brand's site →

The pick for an all-wool suit. DXL sells it as “Designed to meet the needs of our Big & Tall customers”, in lightweight wool from the Vitale Barberis Canonico mill in Italy that is “wrinkle-resistant and water-repellent”. The jacket has two buttons, a notched lapel and side vents. The wool suit pants are flat-front, lined to the knee and in inseams of 30, 32 or 34.

Drawbacks: At $836 it costs about 2.7 times the $308 Synrgy suit, the next dearest (our arithmetic). The pants' waists stop at 54, the smallest top end of the five, and the light grey listing shows no 42 or 44 waist. DXL says both pieces ship directly from the manufacturer.

How to choose

  • Chest 62 or more: the Oak Hill jacket (to 66) or Synrgy (to 64). The three others stop at 58 or 60.
  • Waist bigger than 54: any of the first four; the Brooks Brothers pants stop at 54.
  • Shorter: the two Haggar suits are the only picks with a Short length, both in chests 50 and 52 only. DXL’s chart builds its Short for 5’4” to 5’7”; Haggar gives no height for its own.
  • Tall: Oak Hill, Synrgy and both Haggar suits list Long; the Brooks Brothers light grey listing adds an XL length. On both Haggar pages Long stops at a 56 chest, and on DXL’s pages chest and length are separate buttons, so check that your size and length can be chosen together.
  • Belly bigger than chest: look at the Oak Hill Executive Cut first, then pair each piece by its own number.
  • By budget: $145 for Haggar’s Travel Performance, $250 to $308 for the next three, $836 for Brooks Brothers.

Before you order

  • Buy the pants by waist, not by the jacket. All five are separates, so pick each piece by its own number from the sizes it lists.
  • Check the inseam for your waist. Not every waist comes in every inseam: both Haggar pants drop the 34-inch inseam at the bigger waists, and on DXL’s pages waist and inseam are separate buttons, so pick both before you settle on a suit. DXL’s Oak Hill and Synrgy listings say the 32 can be altered to 34.
  • Pick color, size and length together. Each page asks for them as separate choices, so pick all three before you settle on a suit.
  • Shirt next. Plus size mens clothing covers big and tall shirts and pants in more sizes.
  • Read the dress code. If the invitation says black tie, see black tie vs white tie. More occasion guides are in events.
  • Read the returns page of each store before you buy.

Where these numbers come from

Prices, sizes, fabrics and quoted phrases are copied from DXL’s and Haggar’s product pages, DXL’s size charts, Haggar’s Fit Guide and one Kenneth Cole suit listing, read on 12 October 2026 in US dollars without a code. Size lists are the sizes each listing offers, in stock or not. Suit totals and comparisons are our arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

What size suit does a big man wear?

On DXL's suit jacket chart, a jacket's size is your chest in inches, so a 54 chest takes a 54, and the letter after it is the length: Short is built for 5'4" to 5'7", Regular for 5'7½" to 6' and Long for 6'1½" and taller, with jackets from 44 to 60. The pants go by your waist; with separates you choose each number on its own.

Where can I buy a suit with a 60-inch chest or bigger?

Four of the five picks here list a 60 chest jacket: DXL's Oak Hill Perfect Fit jacket ($198, sizes 46 to 66), Synrgy's Machine Washable jacket at DXL ($210, 48 to 64), the Brooks Brothers wool jacket DXL sells ($568, 46 to 60) and Haggar's J.M. Haggar Premium Stretch jacket ($170, 50 to 60, with the 60 in Regular length only). Only the Oak Hill and Synrgy jackets go past 60.

Are suit separates better than a matched suit for big guys?

They avoid one fixed gap. On one Kenneth Cole nested-suit chart, the pants come 6 to 7 inches smaller than the jacket's chest size, so a 50 jacket comes with a 44 pant. Every pick here sells jacket and pants as separate items, so you choose the jacket by chest and the pants by waist from whatever sizes each one lists.

Can I machine wash a big and tall suit?

Synrgy's Machine Washable Modern-Fit jacket and pants at DXL say to machine wash cold and hang to dry. The other four picks here say dry clean, Haggar's Travel Performance pieces included.
