Plus Size Mens Clothing: 8 Big and Tall Picks That Fit

The shirt that closes over your stomach hangs past your fingertips, or the one long enough for your back pulls tight across the buttons. Going up another X fixes one of those and makes the other worse. Below are eight shirts, tees, pants and coats from six stores, each with the big and tall sizes that were available when we read the listing.

Big, tall, or both: reading the labels

IZOD, Dickies and Berne file these sizes under “Big & Tall” rather than plus size, and the two words mean different things.

Tall means longer, not wider. On Fresh Clean Threads’ crew-neck chart, the 4XL measures 30 inches across the chest in both Regular and Tall; the Tall is 36 inches long against 34, and the brand describes it as having “a 2 inch longer torso and 1 inch longer sleeve.” Eddie Bauer’s men’s chart puts its Tall fit at 6’2” to 6’5”, “Sizes M to XXXL, longer sleeves and body.”

Big means more room around you. Haggar’s fit guide describes its big and tall classic fit for tops as “Our roomiest fit, cut fuller through the chest, waist, and arms”. On IZOD’s shirt below, the two runs are labelled separately: 2XB, 3XB, 4XB and 5XB, then LT, XLT, 2XLT, 3XLT, 4XLT and 5XLT. Our reading of those labels is that B marks the big run and T the tall one, so a 3XB and a 3XLT are not the same size.

Trousers do it with numbers. Berne’s pants chart names the inseams Short 30”, Regular 32”, Tall 34” and X-Tall 36”, and says the waist you measure “is also the pant size that you buy.” The catch: on its carpenter pant, the 36 is listed only up to a 42 waist.

So measure two things before you shop: your chest (tape level, one inch below the armpit, which is how Berne measures) and, for trousers, your waist and inseam. The method for the last one is in how to measure inseam.

Drawbacks: 5XB and 5XLT were not available when read, and its size chart did not come through as text, so there is no chest figure to check a size against before ordering.

A 5.25 oz polyester and cotton twill work shirt, described as having “a generous cut through the shoulders and chest” and a square hem “for easy tucking”, with a moisture-wicking finish. A cheap short-sleeve shirt for work or weekends.

Drawbacks: the tall run stops at 3XLT while the big run goes to 5XL, so a large and tall man above 3XL has no tall option; S to 2XL cost $27.99; XLT, 2XLT, 3XLT and 3XL to 5XL cost $30.99.

Drawbacks: 4XLarge is the top size, and Small in Tall and 3XLarge and 4XLarge in Short were not available when read (the chart prints N/A for those three).

A ring-spun cotton pocket tee with a relaxed fit, side seams “to minimize twisting” and a taped neck seam. It and the Berne chore coat below run the furthest of the eight, to 8XL, and Berne’s shirt chart gives chest measurements from 36 to 38 inches at S to 68 to 70 inches at 6XL.

Drawbacks: the chart has no 7XL or 8XL row, so those two sizes cannot be checked against it; in every colour, 5XL to 8XL could be bought only in Tall (Berne’s Tall is 2 inches longer in the torso); 7XL was available only in black and 8XL only in black or navy; black 4XL was out in Regular; and the price climbs with size, $14.99 to 2XL, $16.99 at 3XL and 4XL, $18.99 from 5XL.

A 10 oz cotton sanded duck work pant with a “Relaxed fit and straight leg”, a hammer loop, side utility pockets and two tape measure loops. Its waist run, to 68, is the wider of the two trousers here.

Drawbacks: the 36 inseam is listed in even waists 30 to 42 only and the 34 stops at 60; $42.99 to a 42 waist, $47.99 from 44 to 54, $52.99 from 56.

Ben Davis Carpenter Pants, Washed Indigo Denim

Heavyweight 14-oz 100 percent cotton denim with a hammer loop and utility pockets. The listing calls it Regular Fit and describes a “relaxed fit through the hips, thighs, and knees”. Ben Davis’s bottoms chart prints a hip and thigh for each waist, so a 50 waist goes with a 56-inch hip and a 33.25-inch thigh.

Drawbacks: the 34-inch length is sold only in waists 32 to 40, so above a 40 waist you get 30 or 32; and the chart runs to a 60 waist but this listing stops at 50.

Berne Heritage Duck Chore Coat

A cotton duck chore coat with polyester lining and fill, a water-repellent finish, hidden knit storm cuffs, pleated elbows and an action back. Berne’s coat chart says its Tall is “2” longer in the torso and sleeve than regular sizes.” For a work or weekend coat above 3XL, where the Eddie Bauer parka stops.

650 fill down, a StormRepel DWR finish, an insulated hood with a removable faux fur ruff, and storm cuffs; a hip-length cut, 31.5 inches long in a regular medium. For the tall man in real cold: Eddie Bauer’s Tall fit is for 6’2” to 6’5”, with longer sleeves and body.

Drawbacks: 3XL is sold in Tall only, and on Eddie Bauer’s men’s chart XXXL is a 54 to 56-inch chest and 48 to 50-inch waist, which is the ceiling; at $229 it is the most expensive of the eight.

How to choose

• Your chest is over 56 inches: Eddie Bauer’s XXXL tops out at 56, so look at Berne, whose shirt and coat charts run to 68 to 70 inches at 6XL (the tee’s 5XL and 6XL are Tall only).
• You are 6’2” or taller: Eddie Bauer’s Tall fit is set for 6’2” to 6’5”; for tees, Fresh Clean Threads Tall to 4XLarge or Berne’s Tall run; for shirts, IZOD’s LT to 4XLT.
• Your waist is over 50: the Berne carpenter pant; in navy, 52 to 60 were available in a 30 or 34 inseam when read, and 62 to 68 in timber khaki in a 30 or 32. The Ben Davis jeans stop at 50.
• You need an inseam over 34: the Berne carpenter pant in a 36, available in navy in every waist it is listed in (even waists 30 to 42) when read. Above a 42 waist, none of these trousers sells more than a 34.

Before you order

• Check the length option. On six of the eight listings, Tall or the inseam is a separate choice from the size.
• Read each store’s returns page before you buy, since sizes above a brand’s printed chart, such as Berne’s 7XL and 8XL, cannot be checked in advance.
