What each size chart gives you

The five brands print different charts, which decides how much you can check before ordering.

Printfresh prints body measurements in two tables, XXS to XL and XXL to 6X. On its size chart, 3X is US 22–24 with a 51 to 53-inch bust and 53.5 to 55.5-inch hips, and 6X is US 34–36 with a 63 to 65-inch bust and a 57.5 to 59.5-inch waist. Its note on the chart reads: “If you normally wear a different size in tops and bottoms, we recommend selecting the larger of the two sizes when purchasing a pajama set.”

Bedhead prints body measurements from XXS to 3X, where 3X (24W/26W) is a 50½-inch bust and 53-inch hips. Its chart says the sleepwear is “designed within the measurements below to have a generous fit”, and adds “Size down if you’re between sizes or prefer a more tailored look.”

Little Sleepies prints a body chart (chest, waist, hip) on the pajama set, running to a 51 to 53-inch chest and 53.5 to 55.5-inch hips at 3XL. Cozy Earth prints a “Product Size Guide” instead: sleeve length, inseam and waist, with chest width and hip added on the Tall set. A button-down top with a relaxed fit the listing calls “roomy and chic”, and mid-rise pants with an elastic waistband, an adjustable drawstring, pockets and a 28-inch inseam, in 100% organic cotton poplin. It suits you if your bust is over 53 inches: the run goes to 6X, and the chart prints bust, waist and hips in inches for every size from XXL up, though the 4X and 5X hip cells (47.5–59.5 and 57.5–59.5 inches) break the pattern of the row, so size those two by bust; that is our reading of the chart. The drawstring lets you set the waist rather than rely on the elastic alone.

Drawbacks: at $168 it is the most expensive set here, level with Cozy Earth’s patterned colours; the fabric line lists no stretch fibre, so size by your bust rather than counting on give; and the care line says to tumble dry on low heat “to avoid shrinkage”.

A notch-collar top with four buttons down the front, a chest pocket, side pockets and a fully elasticated waistband, in organic cotton jersey with 7% elastane. It is the only set here whose listing prints a separate top length for plus sizes: 28½ inches in 1X to 3X against 26½ inches in XS to XL, with 25-inch sleeves in 1X to 3X and a 30¾-inch inseam in XS to 3X. That makes it the pick if your pajama tops ride up.

Drawbacks: the run stops at 3X (a 50½-inch bust); the listing says “Garments are not pre-shrunk”; and XL and 1X overlap on the chart (US 16–18 and 16/18W), so compare the inches (XL is a 43½-inch bust and 46-inch hips, 1X is 44½ and 47) rather than the letters.

Cozy Earth Bamboo Stretch-Knit Long Sleeve Pajama Set

A button-up top with a front chest pocket, and pants with an elastic drawstring waistband and two side pockets, in 95% bamboo viscose and 5% spandex. The listing describes it as “Generously sized for relaxed luxury”. Its “Product Size Guide” gives a 33.25-inch sleeve and a 29-inch inseam at XXXL (24–26). The separate Tall version sells the same XS to XXXL run at the same $148 with a 32-inch inseam and, in its words, “extra sleeve and front body length for tall statures”, so it suits you if your legs or torso run long.

Drawbacks: $148 is for plain colours such as Black, Navy and Grey. Patterned colours are $168, and at XXXL the patterned choice is the two toiles only (Sky Toile and Tulip Toile); the leopard prints stop at XXL. The run stops at XXXL. When read, the plain colours Burgundy, Cranberry and Evergreen were out in every size and Ivory was out in XXL; the Tall version (five colours) was out in Navy and Ivory XXL.

Knix Modal Long Sleeve Sleep Set

Little Sleepies Secret Garden Women’s Long Sleeve Sleep Shirt

A button-down, long-sleeve nightshirt in the same bamboo viscose and spandex, which the listing says “Hits above knee”. Its size guide gives a length for every size, from 32.5 inches at XS to 37.5 at 3XL, and says: “If in between sizes or expecting, we recommend sizing up.” It suits you if waistbands are the problem.

Drawbacks: the size guide lists only chest and length, with no hip figure; the description puts a medium at about 34 inches long while the guide says 34.5.

How to choose

• Your bust is over 53 inches: Printfresh’s chart runs from 4X (55 to 57 inches) to 6X (63 to 65 inches), all in stock when read; size 4X and 5X by bust (our reading: their hip cells break the row). Knix sells XXXXL but its inches did not come through as text, so check the chart on the listing first.
• The buttons gape: order by your bust measurement, not your usual letter. Of the seven, Printfresh’s set is the only one in 100% cotton poplin; the other six list spandex or elastane (4% to 7% where a figure is given), which is stretch the poplin does not have. That is our reading of the fabric lines, not a brand claim.
• The top rides up or the legs are short: Bedhead’s 28½-inch top in 1X to 3X and 30¾-inch inseam, or Cozy Earth’s Tall set with a 32-inch inseam (in XXL, Black, Grey and Blossom were in stock when read).
• Waistbands dig in: a drawstring lets you set the waist (Printfresh, Cozy Earth and the Knix set have one), or skip the waistband with the Little Sleepies sleep shirt or the Knix sleep dress.

Before you order

• Compare two sizes when you sit between them. The brands disagree on which way to go: Bedhead says size down, Little Sleepies’ sleep shirt guide says size up, and Printfresh says take the larger of your top and bottom sizes for a set.
• Try the set on at home with the tags on: sit down, reach overhead and check that the buttons stay flat across your bust and the waistband does not roll.
• Read each store’s returns page before you buy, and check that your size is in stock in the colour you want.

On the figures the listings print: Bedhead's set has a 28½-inch top in 1X to 3X and a 30¾-inch inseam in XS to 3X.
