The listing gives 96% polyester and 4% spandex, 42 3/8 inches full length to hem at 0X, and a care line of machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out, lay flat to dry. On Kiyonna’s size chart, 5X is a 61 to 66-inch bust, a 55.5 to 60.5-inch waist and 66.5 to 71.5-inch hips.
Drawbacks: The name says midi but the description calls it a knee-length design, and the only length printed is for 0X, so the hem on a 5X is not stated. The neckline is a surplice V. Pick the Black Noir colour; the other is a navy floral.
Karen Kane Plus Size Three Quarter Sleeve A-Line Dress
A plain black jersey A-line that the listing places in the Karen Kane Little Black Dress Collection, with an easy pull-on shape, three-quarter sleeves and a length of 39 inches at size 2X. The jersey is 90% rayon and 10% spandex. On the plus chart printed on the same page, 3X is a 51-inch bust, a 43-inch waist and 53-inch hips, with the hip taken 8 inches below the waist in the chart’s note for 0X–3X, and about 8 1/2 inches for plus sizing in the measuring image on the same tab.
Drawbacks: The range stops at 3X, a 51-inch bust on the brand's plus chart. The description says a crew neckline while the feature list and the page's image alt text say scoop neckline, so check the photos. Care is dry clean or hand wash cold, lay flat to dry.
Universal Standard Lucinda Ponte Midi Dress - Black
If your bust or hips are past Kiyonna’s 5X or Karen Kane’s 3X, look at this one first. The dress is a fit-and-flare cut in the brand’s 380g ponte, 60% rayon, 35% nylon and 5% elastane, with a back zipper and short sleeves, and the care line is machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Its dress measurement chart gives the body length at each size, from 42.5 inches at 4XS to 49 at 4XL, and at 4XL a 74-inch chest, 71.5-inch waist and 85-inch hip circumference for the garment. Universal Standard’s body measurement chart puts size 40 at a 75 to 78-inch bust, a 70 to 74-inch natural waist and 80 to 84-inch hips.
Drawbacks: Short sleeves, 6.5 to 8.5 inches on its own chart, so add a jacket if you want your arms covered. The listing describes a fit-and-flare silhouette with a fuller skirt.
Kiyonna Charisma Crepe Jumpsuit
The pick if you would rather not wear a dress. It is a full-length black crepe jumpsuit, lined in 100% polyester, with a surplice neckline, short flutter sleeves, a waistband with a tie that can be removed, pleating at the front and back of the pant and a zip at centre back. At 2X the listing gives about 63 3/8 inches from the high point of the shoulder to the hem and an inseam of about 30 1/4 inches. On the same Kiyonna size chart as the Diana, 5X is a 61 to 66-inch bust.
Drawbacks: The care line reads Professional Dry Clean, Reduced Moisture, Do Not Steam. The sleeves are short flutter sleeves, and the measurements are printed for 2X only.
Universal Standard Palais Wide Leg Ponte Pants - Black
The trousers if you want a dark suit rather than a dress. The listing describes a double-pleated wide leg with a fully functioning zipper fly and a waistband button, in a ponte of 60% rayon, 35% nylon and 5% elastane, and says “Pair with any ponte blazer to complete the suit.” Care is machine wash cold, only non-chlorine bleach, tumble dry low. Its pant chart gives 4XL (38-40) a 65 to 70-inch waist circumference, a 19-inch front rise and an 81-inch hip circumference.
Drawbacks: The chart gives a 29-inch inseam for every size, so if your inseam is longer, compare before ordering. It fastens with a zip fly and button, not a pull-on waist.
Universal Standard Kenton Peplum Ponte Blazer - Black
A jacket to wear over the Lucinda’s short sleeves, or with the Palais trousers as a suit (our suggestion); the blazer listing itself suggests pairing it with tailored pants for a workwear suit. It is black ponte, 68% rayon, 29% nylon and 3% spandex, with tailored lines that open into a peplum over the hips. Its blazer chart gives 4XL (38-40) a 29-inch body length, a 74-inch chest circumference and a 27-inch sleeve. With the trousers, the suit comes to $363 at the reference prices above (our arithmetic).
Drawbacks: Dry clean only. The peplum flares over the hips. Its fibre mix differs from the Palais trousers, so check that the two blacks match side by side (our suggestion).

The Universal Standard rows use the brand’s body chart for size 40. The dress and blazer charts measure the garment itself; at 4XL both give a 74-inch chest circumference, below the 75 to 78-inch bust the body chart gives size 40, so compare both before ordering. The Palais pant chart gives 4XL a 65 to 70-inch waist and an 81-inch hip circumference, against the body chart’s 70 to 74-inch natural waist and 80 to 84-inch hips for size 40.
How to choose
- Measure first. Take your bust, natural waist and fullest hip (see how to measure your bust) and compare each with that brand’s chart, not the tag letter.
- Bust over 51 inches or hips over 53: that is past the largest size on the Karen Kane chart. The two Kiyonna picks go to 5X and the three Universal Standard picks to 40.
- Bust over 66 inches or hips over 71.5: of the six picks, only the three Universal Standard pieces have a size on Universal Standard’s body chart for you, up to a 78-inch bust and 84-inch hips at 40.
- You want a plus size funeral dress with your arms covered: the Diana has long sleeves and the Karen Kane three-quarter sleeves; the Lucinda’s are short, so add the Kenton blazer (our suggestion).
