Bariatric Beds: Weight Ratings, Deck Widths and Five Picks

Five electric bariatric beds, 36 to 54 inches wide and rated 600 to 1,000 lb, with the weight label each page uses, height range, mattress size and price.

Setting up a room for someone who weighs 400 lb or more means a bed that raises the head, lifts to a height a carer can work at, and is rated for that weight. Buying by the word bariatric does not settle the weight question: one 42 inch bed’s manual prints 600 lb for the person in it and 700 lb for everything on it. Below are five electric bariatric beds, 36 to 54 inches wide, with the weight figure each page prints in its own words, the height range, the mattress size and the price (a dealer’s, where the maker prints none).

The short answer

Bed Best for Price (reference) Why
Medacure Bariatric Homecare Bed 750 lb at 42 in $1,625 to $3,846 at Med Mart 1,000 lb at 48 and 54 in; battery backup listed
Dynarex Bari+Max 10404 A hand crank for power cuts $955 at MFI Medical 600 lb, 42 in; 48 and 54 in HD versions
ProBasics PB42BARBED A printed occupant and total figure (600 / 700 lb) $1,553 at New Leaf Home Medical 600 lb occupant, 700 lb total
Invacare BAR600 A bed that sits low $2,239 at CME Corp 600 lb, 14 to 22 in high
Medacure Lincoln LX-BARI A width that changes $2,275 at First Class Mobility 36, 42 or 48 in; 750 lb

What the weight figure covers

Makers use different labels for the number. The ProBasics owner’s manual prints two figures for one bed: the occupant “CANNOT exceed 600 lbs.”, and the total, “including accessories, mattress, occupant and ANY other person/object positioned on the bed”, cannot exceed 700 lbs. Medacure and Dynarex print Weight Capacity, as do the ProBasics and Invacare dealer listings.

Our reading, not the makers’: when a page gives a total, add the mattress, rails and anything else on the bed to the person’s weight and keep that sum under the figure. When it gives an occupant weight, set the person’s weight against it directly. For a page that says weight capacity, ask the dealer whether the mattress counts (our suggestion).

The five beds

Medacure Bariatric Homecare Bed (HCFE42, HCFE48, HCFE54)

$1,625 (42 in), $2,453 (48 in), $3,846 (54 in)Price for reference only42, 48 or 54 x 80 in · 750 lb (42 in), 1,000 lb (48 and 54 in) · 18–26 or 18–27 in · full electricView it on the brand's site →

One pick if you need a 42 inch bed rated over 600 lb: its Weight Capacity is 750 lb, tied with the Lincoln for the highest 42 inch figure of the five picks. The 48 inch and 54 inch versions are rated 1,000 lb. The spec tables give a travel range of 18 to 26 inches on the 42 inch bed and 18 to 27 on the wider two. All three list an 8-function hand pendant with auto contour, a battery backup for power outages and half rails, and each spec table gives the mattress size, 80 by 42, 48 or 54 inches. The 88 inch length for the 42 inch bed is from its brochure. Medacure prints no price; the prices above are Med Mart’s listing on 1 October 2026, with its No Rails option; Half Rails add $89 there.

Drawbacks: The 42 inch bed's overall length is 86 inches in its spec table and 88 in its brochure.

Dynarex Bari+Max Bariatric Full Electric Homecare Bed (10404)

$955Price for reference only42 x 80 in deck · 600 lb · 18–26 in floor to deck · full electric with hand crankView it on the brand's site →

One pick if a power cut is the concern: the 42 inch 10404 comes with an emergency hand crank, while the wider HD versions take an optional backup battery, per the sell sheet. It is full electric on a steel pan deck, 18 to 26 inches from floor to deck. The HD page covers the 48 inch 10405 at 750 lb and the 54 inch 10403 at 1,000 lb, on slat decks; its 54 inch spec table prints floor-to-deck height as “13’ - 25”” (as printed) and Deck Height Inches as 18, against 18 to 26 in its feature list and on the sell sheet. Dynarex lists bundles with a foam mattress at 42 x 80, 48 x 80 and 54 x 80 inches. Dynarex prints no price; the price above is MFI Medical’s listing for SKU DRX-10404 on 1 October 2026.

Drawbacks: 600 lb, the lowest figure among the five picks, which it shares with two other 42 inch beds.

It is full electric, with head, foot and height on the hand pendant, a split pan design with removable bed ends, no tools for setup, and an emergency crank for power failures.

Drawbacks: 42 inches wide and 600 lb for the occupant, so it covers the lower end of the range. The deck height is 18.5 to 26 inches on the dealer listing; the manual's fabric height, floor to the bottom of the mattress, is 18¼ to 26¼.

Invacare BAR600 Bariatric Bed (BAR600IVC)

$2,239Price for reference only42 x 80 in sleep surface · 600 lb · 14–22 in bed height · full electricView it on the brand's site →

Price and link are CME Corp’s listing on 30 September 2026, which gives 600 lb, a 42 by 80 inch sleep surface and a bed height of 14 to 22 inches. Its 14 inch bottom setting matches the standard Lincoln’s; the LX-BARI-9 goes lower, at 9 inches, and the Dynarex 10403 spec table prints “13’” (see above). It is full electric, with a split spring design, removable bed ends and no special tools needed for setup.

Drawbacks: Its highest setting, 22 inches, is the lowest top height of the five picks.

How to choose

  1. Weight first. Add the mattress and rails to the person’s weight wherever the page gives a total (our reading). Under 600 lb with room to spare, any of the five is rated for it. Up to 750 lb: the 42 inch Medacure, the Lincoln, the 48 inch Dynarex, or any 1,000 lb bed. Past that, the 1,000 lb beds: the 54 inch Dynarex and the 48 and 54 inch Medacure.
  2. Then width. The fixed-width beds come at 42, 48 or 54 inches; the Lincoln locks at 36, 42 or 48. Measure the bedroom for the bed plus working space for a carer, and the doorways on the way in.
  3. Then height. Measure the seat height of a chair the person stands up from easily, and compare it with the low end of each range plus the mattress thickness (our arithmetic). The labels differ across the five picks: travel range on Medacure, floor to deck on Dynarex, bed height at CME, low and high range on the Lincoln, and deck height excluding the mattress on the ProBasics listing. For the Medacure home care beds, the Invacare and the Lincoln, ask the dealer whether the range includes a mattress (our suggestion). For a carer working at the bedside, the top of the range matters: from 22 inches on the Invacare to 30 on the Lincoln.
  4. Then power cuts. Four are sold as full electric, and the Lincoln’s page lists electric hi/low, head and foot functions. The Medacure home care beds list a battery backup; the Dynarex 10404 and the ProBasics come with a hand crank; for the Dynarex HD a backup battery is optional.

If the person does not need a raising head or height adjustment, a heavy duty bed frame with a printed rating is the other route. For sitting beside the bed, our bariatric chair guide lists chairs rated 500 to 1,000 lb.

Before you order

  • Match the mattress to the deck. On the four fixed-width beds here the deck is 42, 48 or 54 by 80 inches; the Lincoln locks at 36, 42 or 48 and runs 80 to 88 long. Our reading: size the mattress to the deck. The ProBasics manual says replacement mattresses and bed side rails “with dimensions DIFFERENT than the original equipment supplied or specified by the bed frame manufacturer are NOT interchangeable”. Dynarex’s product pages list foam mattress bundles at 42, 48 and 54 by 80 inches.
  • Get the rating in writing for the exact model number and width you order (our suggestion).
  • Plan the delivery. The 48 and 54 inch Medacure beds ship in three cartons, the heaviest being the foot deck at 117 and 124 lb.
  • Read the dealer’s return terms before you order a bed this size.

Where these numbers come from

Ratings, sizes and heights are from the maker pages, sell sheets, brochures and manuals linked above, and for the ProBasics and Invacare from the two dealer listings named there; read on 30 September 2026. None of the five prices is from the maker: they are reference prices from the dealer listings named on each pick, read on 30 September 2026 (ProBasics, Invacare) and 1 October 2026 (the other three). Where one maker printed two figures, both are given above. Sums and comparisons across beds are our arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weight limit on a bariatric bed?

On the five picks here, 600 to 1,000 lb, set by model and width: 600 lb on the 42 inch Dynarex and Invacare beds and the ProBasics (600 lb occupant, 700 lb total); 750 lb on the 42 inch Medacure, the Lincoln and the 48 inch Dynarex; 1,000 lb on the 54 inch Dynarex and the 48 and 54 inch Medacure.

How wide is a bariatric bed?

The fixed-width beds here have decks 42, 48 or 54 inches wide, each 80 inches long. The Lincoln's width locks at 36, 42 or 48 inches and its length runs from 80 to 88.

What is the difference between occupant weight and a total weight limit?

The ProBasics manual prints both for one bed: 600 lb for the occupant, the person alone, and 700 lb in total, mattress, accessories and anyone else on the bed included. Our reading: set the person's weight against an occupant figure, and the person plus mattress and accessories against a total. For a page that says only weight capacity, ask the dealer whether the mattress counts (our suggestion).

Does a bariatric bed need a special mattress?

On the four fixed-width picks here the deck is 42, 48 or 54 by 80 inches; the Lincoln locks at 36, 42 or 48 and runs 80 to 88 long. Our reading: size the mattress to the deck. The ProBasics manual says replacement mattresses and bed side rails with different dimensions from the original equipment are not interchangeable, and Dynarex's product pages list foam mattress bundles at 42, 48 and 54 by 80 inches.
