Heavy Duty Step Stool: Five Picks Rated 300 to 500 lb
Five heavy duty step stools whose pages print a weight figure, 300 to 500 lb, with step sizes, standing heights, handrails and folding, and what to measure.

The step stool in the cupboard creaks when you put your weight on it, or the tread is so shallow that your heel hangs off the back. The words heavy duty do not settle it: they appear on pages below for stools printed at 300 lb and at 500 lb. Below are five step stools whose pages print a weight figure, with the step size, standing height and handrail each one gives, and who each one suits.
The short answer
| Pick | Best for | Price (reference) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Industrial Medical Heavy Duty Bariatric Step Stool | One step, nothing to hold, lowest price of the five | $54.95 | 500 lb; 14 x 11 in step surface |
| Drive Medical Bariatric Foot Stool with Handrail (13062-1SV) | One step with a handle | $84.95 at HME Medical Shop | 500 lb; 14 x 10 in step surface; 34 in handle height |
| Ocelco PVC Heavy Duty Step Stool (303-402) | A low step with a rail | $254 | 500 lb; 6½ in high; 41 in handrail |
| Little Giant Jumbo Step | Two or three steps with a rail | $196 (2-step), $230 (3-step) | 375 lb, Type IAA; inside clear width 1 ft 2 in |
| Cosco Three-Step Folding Step Stool (11839GGO) | Three folding steps, for readers well under 300 lb | $140 at Global Industrial | 300 lb, Type 1A |
What the weight figure tells you
Three of the five picks print 500 lb as a weight capacity and give no ANSI type. The two folding picks give a type as well: Little Giant prints Type IAA at 375 lb for the Jumbo Step, and Cosco prints Type 1A at 300 lb for its three-step. Little Giant’s FAQ calls a duty rating “the maximum safe load capacity of that ladder according to ANSI standards”, and gives Type IA 300 lbs and Type IAA 375 lbs. We read that as a figure for you plus whatever you carry up (our reading), so a 340 lb reader carrying a 20 lb box is at 360 lb (our arithmetic), under the Jumbo Step’s 375 and over the Cosco’s 300.

The five picks
Global Industrial Medical Heavy Duty Bariatric Step Stool
The lowest price of the five picks for a 500 lb figure. Global Industrial sells it under its own name, with a Weight Capacity of 500 lbs, a step surface 14 inches wide and 11 deep, and a step height of 9¼ inches. The frame is 1 inch chrome steel tubing with what the page calls a reinforced “X” brace, under a non-skid, ribbed rubber platform, with reinforced rubber tips on the legs. Overall it is 18 inches wide on the page. Pick it for one step up to a high shelf or cupboard when you do not need anything to hold.
Drawbacks: One step only, and its product photo shows no handrail. The page gives a Step Height of 9¼ in and, in its overall dimensions, 10 in high, without saying where the 10 is measured.
Drive Medical Bariatric Foot Stool with Handrail (13062-1SV)
The same kind of single step, with a handle to hold. Drive’s catalog page lists a Weight Capacity of 500 lb, a 9 inch step height and a step surface of 10 inches deep by 14 wide, on 1 inch steel tubing with a non-skid ribbed rubber platform. The page covers two items: 13062-1SV is the one that “comes with handrail”, listed at a handle height of 34 inches; 13037-1SV is the stool alone. HME Medical Shop listed the 13062-1SV at $84.95 on 1 October 2026. Pick it if you want one 9 inch step and something to hold as you step up and down.
Drawbacks: Drive's page shows “SIGN IN TO VIEW PRICE” instead of a price, so the price here is a dealer's. Its step is 10 in deep, an inch shallower than the Global Industrial's 11 (our arithmetic).
Ocelco PVC Heavy Duty Step Stool (303-402)
The lowest height figure printed for any of the five picks (6½ in high, part not named), with a 41 in handrail figure; the page does not say what the 41 measures. Ocelco’s page lists it as 16 inches wide x 12 deep x 6½ high, with a 500 lbs Weight Capacity and a 41 inch handrail. The photo shows a white PVC frame, a U-shaped rail rising from the back corners and dark strips across the top (our reading of the photo). Ocelco’s page describes it as a stool for use in medical settings. Pick it if a 9 inch step is more than you want and you want a rail at hand (our reading).
Drawbacks: The highest price of the five picks. The page does not say whether 16 x 12 in is the top or the whole stool, or where the 41 in handrail is measured from. Ocelco lists it in its MRI Step Stool And Folding Stand section.
Little Giant Jumbo Step
The pick if you need two or three steps; Little Giant’s flyer calls it a portable staircase. Little Giant rates it Type IAA, to hold 375 lbs, and its spec pages give the highest standing level as 1 ft 6 in for the 2-step and 2 ft 2 in for the 3-step, each with an Inside Clear Width of 1 ft 2 in and a Top Width of 1 ft 7 in. The handrail rotates and carries a tool tray, and the page says the steps have a non-slip surface. The maker’s flyer lists a Step Width of 8.5 inches for all three models in its table and says it folds into a slim storage profile. The aluminum 2-step weighs 11.9 lb and the 3-step 16.4 lb. Prices are for the aluminum models on Little Giant’s own store.
Drawbacks: At 375 lb it is under the three one-step picks' 500. The flyer's Step Width of 8.5 in and the spec pages' Inside Clear Width of 1 ft 2 in are different numbers, and neither page says which way each is measured.
Cosco Three-Step Folding Step Stool (11839GGO)
Three folding steps with a handle, for a reader well under 300 lb once you count what you carry (our reading). Cosco gives it a 300 lbs Weight Capacity and an ANSI Type 1A rating, with non-slip feet on the legs, a large platform step and a handle, and it weighs 20.68 lb. The drawing on Cosco’s page shows 52.2 inches beside the open stool and 32.1 by 20.2 along the base; none of the three figures carries a label. Global Industrial listed it at $140 on 1 October 2026; that listing gives a height to the top step of 25 inches and lists the material as steel.
Drawbacks: Its 300 lb is the lowest figure of the five picks. Cosco's page and its dimension drawing give no step size, and Cosco's page lists only an MSRP and has no way to buy on that page, so the price here is a dealer's.

How to choose: three numbers you can measure
- Your weight plus what you carry (our reading). Over 375 lb: the three 500 lb one-step stools. Between 300 and 375: those three or the Jumbo Step. Well under 300: any of the five.
- How high you need to stand. Measure from the floor to the shelf you reach for and decide how far up you need to stand. The one-step pages print a Step Height of 9 inches (Drive) and 9¼ (Global Industrial), and the Ocelco lists 6½ inches high; the Jumbo 2-step’s top level is 18 inches (our arithmetic from 1 ft 6 in); the three-steps are 25 inches (the Cosco, on Global Industrial’s listing) and 26 inches (the Jumbo, our arithmetic from 2 ft 2 in).
- How wide you stand. Stand with your feet where they feel steady and measure from the outside of one shoe to the outside of the other. Drive and Global Industrial print a step surface 14 in wide; the Jumbo Step lists an Inside Clear Width of 1 ft 2 in and a Step Width of 8.5 in (flyer), measured which way neither says; the Ocelco lists 16 in wide, part not named.
If you want something to hold, cross off the Global Industrial; the other four have a handle or a rail. If storage is tight, Little Giant and Cosco both describe theirs as folding.

Before you order
- Read the figure on the page you buy from. The ratings above are from the maker or brand pages, except where a store is named; a store’s listing can word them differently.
- Measure the floor where it will stand. The Jumbo Step’s spec pages give a Maximum Footprint of 1 ft 9 in for the 2-step and 2 ft 9 in for the 3-step; Cosco’s drawing shows 32.1 by 20.2 inches at the base, unlabelled; the Global Industrial is 18 inches wide overall.
- Read the store’s return terms before paying, especially for the two picks bought through a dealer.

Where these numbers come from
Weight figures, sizes and the Jumbo Step, Global Industrial and Ocelco prices are from the maker and store pages linked on each pick, read on 1 October 2026; the Drive price is HME Medical Shop’s and the Cosco price Global Industrial’s, read the same day. Sums and conversions are our arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
How much weight can a heavy duty step stool hold?
It depends on the model. Of the five picks in this guide, three one-step stools print 500 lb (Global Industrial, Drive Medical and Ocelco), the Little Giant Jumbo Step prints 375 lb with an ANSI Type IAA rating, and the Cosco three-step prints 300 lb with a Type 1A rating. Count what you carry up as well as your own weight (our reading).
What step stool works for a 400 lb person?
Of the five picks in this guide, only the three one-step stools print a figure above 400 lb, all of them 500 lb: the Global Industrial (9¼ in step, no handrail in its photo), the Drive Medical 13062-1SV (9 in step, 34 in handle height) and the Ocelco PVC stool (6½ in high, 41 in handrail). The two folding picks print 375 and 300 lb.
What do Type IA and Type IAA mean on a step stool?
They are ANSI duty ratings. Little Giant's FAQ gives Type IA a load capacity of 300 lbs and Type IAA 375 lbs. Of the five picks in this guide, the two folding stools print a type (Type IAA on the Little Giant Jumbo Step, Type 1A on the Cosco); the three 500 lb one-step stools print a weight capacity and no type.
How wide is the step on a heavy duty step stool?
Two of the five picks in this guide print a step surface 14 in wide (Drive Medical 14 x 10 in, Global Industrial 14 x 11 in). The Little Giant Jumbo Step's spec pages give an Inside Clear Width of 1 ft 2 in and its flyer a Step Width of 8.5 in, without saying which way each is measured. Ocelco lists 16 in wide by 12 deep without saying whether that is the top or the whole stool, and Cosco prints no step size.
