Heavy Duty Toilet Seat: 6 Picks, Weight Limits and Widths
Six heavy duty toilet seats whose makers print a weight figure, 400 to over 1,200 lb, with the label each uses, seat width, hinges, fit and reference prices.

The seat that came with your toilet slides sideways when you sit down, a hinge has already cracked once, and the replacement says heavy duty without a number. Buying by those words does not settle it: Kohler’s support note says it does not specify a weight limit on its own seats, which are designed to a residential test whose static load is 300 lbs. Below are six seats whose makers print a figure, from 400 to over 1,200 lb, with the label each uses, the width, the hinges and who each suits.
The short answer
| Pick | Best for | Price (reference) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big John Original 1W | The highest figure of the six picks, taking the Classic at its 1,000 lb listing (our reading); 19 in wide | $168 | 1200 lbs. Capacity (listing), over 1,200 lb (description); stainless steel hinges |
| Big John Standard 6W | The same 19 in width for less | $99.00 | 800 lbs. Capacity; Big John’s model for residential use |
| Bemis Paramont 1000CPT | A closed seat with a lid and metal hinges at 16.5 in, narrower than the 19 in Big Johns | $151 | 1,000 lbs; Width 16.5 in; chrome hinges |
| Bath Royale Executive BR501 | A 14¼ in slow-close seat, up to 400 lb | $79.98 (elongated, white) | Tested to 400 lbs on seat and closed lid; 14¼ in |
| Big John Classic 7W | A Big John at a regular seat width | $99.00 | 1,000 lbs. Capacity (listing), over 1,200 lb (description); 14 or 14½ in |
| Bemis Assurance E85320TSS | Sitting 3 in higher on the seat itself | $150 | 1,000 lbs; seat raised 3 in |
What the figure on the box covers
Makers word the number differently.
- Capacity. Big John’s seat listing prints “1200 lbs. Capacity” for the Original and “800 lbs. Capacity” for the Standard. The Original’s own description says “rated at over 1,200 pounds”.
- Weight limit, subject to the toilet. Bemis’s Paramont page says “Seat weight limit is 1,000 lbs., subject to weight limit of associated toilet”, and the spec sheet adds “Always check the load-bearing weight of the water closet.”
- Tested to, seat and lid. Bath Royale prints “Tested to 400 lbs (on seat and closed lid)” for the Executive.
- No figure. Kohler gives none for its seats, only the residential ANSI Z124 tests (static load 300 lbs, plus dynamic tests) they are designed to pass.
Our reading: where a maker prints a figure two ways, plan on the lower one, and treat any seat figure as the seat’s alone; the bowl under it has its own limit.

The six picks
Big John Original Toilet Seat with Cover (1W)
The pick if you want the highest figure of the six picks, taking the Classic at its 1,000 lb listing (our reading), and the widest seat (tied with the Standard 6W). Big John’s listing gives the Original 1200 lbs. Capacity, a 2½ inch rise and a 19 by 19 inch seat without naming either side; its flyer calls it 19 inches wide from side to side. The description gives the seat as ABS plastic with stainless steel hinges, made to fit “either a round or elongated toilet bowl”. It is held in place by what the listing calls “Stabilizing ‘Synthetic Rubber Bumpers’ that grip the porcelain”. The 1W has a closed front and cover; also sold open front (3W, $168), open without a cover (4W, $158) and in cream (2CR, $168).
Drawbacks: At 19 inches across it is about 5 inches wider than the Bath Royale’s 14¼ (our arithmetic), so measure the room beside the bowl first. It is also the dearest of the six picks.
Big John Standard Toilet Seat Closed Front with Cover (6W)
The pick if you want the Original’s width and are under 800 lb. Big John’s product page says this model is “designed specifically for residential use” and “holds up to 800 lbs of weight”. The seat listing gives a 1½ inch rise and “Durable nylon hinges”; the flyer calls them glass-filled nylon and gives the seat as 19 inches wide from side to side, and Big John’s installation PDF calls them ABS hinges. Closed front with a cover, the Original’s rubber bumpers, and $69 less than the 1W (our arithmetic).
Drawbacks: 800 lb is the lowest Big John seat figure, and its hinges are nylon rather than the stainless steel of the Original and Classic. One Big John installation PDF calls them ABS hinges instead.
Bemis Paramont 1000CPT
The pick if you want a closed seat with a lid and metal hinges at 16.5 inches, narrower than the 19 inch Big Johns, with a 1,000 lb figure. Bemis’s store lists it as closed front with cover and calls it “oversized for comfort”; the spec sheet gives the hinges as chrome with non-corroding 300 series stainless steel posts and pintles. Bemis says it fits both round and elongated bowls. The installation sheet has you tighten the fastener under the bowl until its lower portions snap off; Bemis calls this Stay·Tite system “Never Loosens”.
Drawbacks: Bemis makes the figure “subject to weight limit of associated toilet”, and its installation sheet says “Do not stand on cover”. Its 1,000 lb is 200 under the Original 1W’s 1,200 listing (our arithmetic).
Bath Royale Executive Toilet Seat (BR501)
The pick if you are under 400 lb and want a slow-close seat, at the lowest price of the six picks; its figure is the one seat-and-lid test figure of the six. The Executive is 100% polypropylene, which the page calls “Heavier and thicker than most plastic seats”, on low-profile stainless steel mounting bases, with “4 slip-resistant bumpers on seat & lid”. The comparison chart on the page gives its Actual Seat Width as 14¼ inches. Round starts at $69.95; the elongated colours are $84.96.
Drawbacks: 400 lb is the lowest figure of the six picks. The page says its seats are not compatible with risers or grab bars that install between seat and bowl, and that skirted bowls need top mount anchors, sold separately.
Big John Classic Toilet Seat (7W)
The pick for a Big John at an ordinary width. The listing calls it “Regular Toilet Seat Width, with all the benefits of the Big John Original” and gives it as 14 1/2 inches wide with 1000 lbs. Capacity and a 2½ inch rise. The flyer says 14 inches wide from side to side and 1,000 lbs. Capacity, while the product description says “rated at over 1,200 pounds”. Stainless steel hinges and the Original’s rubber bumpers; Big John says it fits round or elongated bowls.
Drawbacks: The figure and the width are each printed two ways: plan on 1,000 lb (our reading); for the room beside the bowl, allow for 14½ inches. It is open front with no lid.
Bemis Assurance 3 in Raised Toilet Seat (E85320TSS)
The one raised seat among the six picks: it replaces the seat instead of adding a riser on top. Bemis’s page says the seat height is increased by 3 inches and gives a “weight capacity of 1000 lbs”; its overview says “tested to 1,000 lb. weight capacity”. The page lists Width 16.125 inches under model E85320TSS; the spec sheet drawing prints 16-1/4 and 19-1/8 inches without labels. It is closed front with a cover, sold as E85320TSS (elongated) or R85320TSS (round), with a shield under the ring that Bemis says “keeps everything in the bowl”.
Drawbacks: Plastic hinges, on stainless steel posts and pintles, and support arms sold separately. At 3 inches higher, it raises the seat for everyone who uses that toilet (our reading).

How to choose
- Your weight, against the figure. Under 400 lb, all six picks’ figures cover you; up to 800, all but the Bath Royale. Between 800 and 1,000: the Paramont, the Assurance, the Original and the Classic. Over 1,000, only the Original 1W, taking the Classic at its 1,000 lb listing (our reading). Over 1,200, none of the six picks.
- The room beside the bowl, against the width. Measure from the middle of the bowl to the nearest wall, vanity or grab bar on each side. A 19 inch seat reaches 9½ inches either side of the middle, a 14¼ inch seat about 7 (our arithmetic). Tight space: the Bath Royale (14¼) or the Classic (allow 14½). Middle: the two Bemis seats. Room to spare: the Original or the Standard.
- Round or elongated. The Bath Royale and the Assurance are sold by shape, so measure your bowl; the three Big John seats and the Paramont are each described as fitting either.
- Height. If the seat height is the trouble rather than the seat, the Assurance adds 3 inches; the Big John seats list a rise of 1½ to 2½ inches.
If the toilet itself is the worry: heavy duty toilet figures
Bemis’s footnote says to check the bowl’s load-bearing weight too. Kohler’s support note, dated 2011, gives figures for its own toilets in “Current production” as of that note: floor-mounted vitreous china bowls “will withstand a vertical force up to 1,000 lbs”, and wall-mounted ones meet the 500 lbs. minimum load-bearing requirement of the ASME A112.19.2-2005/CSA B45.1-05 standards. It adds that, as of that note, no standard set a minimum for floor-mounted bowls. Those figures are Kohler’s, for Kohler toilets.
For a wall-hung toilet, Big John sells a toilet support ($199) that mounts under the bowl, working with the wall carrier, and on Big John’s account increases the weight capacity “from 350 lbs to over 1000 lbs” (its seat installation PDF says to 1,000 lbs).

Before you order
- Check the bolt holes and the bowl’s sides. Bath Royale gives 4.5 to 6.5 inches between holes, and says skirted bowls need top mount anchors.
- The lid. Bemis’s Paramont installation sheet says “Do not stand on cover”.

Where these numbers come from
Figures, widths, hinges and prices are from the Big John, Bemis and Bath Royale pages and PDFs linked above, and the toilet figures from Kohler’s support note, all read on 1 October 2026. Where a maker printed a figure or a width two ways, both are given. Differences and price gaps are our arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
How much weight can a heavy duty toilet seat hold?
It depends on the seat; the words heavy duty are not a rating. The six picks in this guide print figures from 400 lb (Bath Royale Executive, tested on the seat and the closed lid) to 1,200 lb (Big John Original 1W, listed at 1200 lbs. Capacity and described as rated at over 1,200 pounds; the Classic 7W's description says the same, its listing 1,000). Kohler says it does not specify a weight limit for its own seats.
What is the best toilet seat for a heavy person?
Of the six picks in this guide, start with the Big John Original 1W if you want the highest figure of the six picks, 1,200 lb, taking the Classic at its 1,000 lb listing (our reading), on a seat its flyer gives as 19 inches wide from side to side; the Big John Standard 6W has the same 19 inch width at 800 lb for $99.00. For a closed seat with a lid and metal hinges at 16.5 inches, narrower than the 19 inch Big Johns, the Bemis Paramont 1000CPT gives 1,000 lb. Then check the toilet under it.
Is a heavy duty toilet seat enough, or do I need a heavy duty toilet?
Bemis makes the Paramont's 1,000 lb seat figure subject to the weight limit of the toilet underneath. Kohler's support note, dated 2011, says its floor-mounted china bowls in current production as of that note withstand a vertical force up to 1,000 lbs and its wall-mounted toilets meet a 500 lbs. minimum; those are Kohler's figures for Kohler toilets only. For a wall-hung toilet, Big John sells an under-bowl support that it says raises capacity from 350 lbs to over 1000 lbs (its seat installation PDF says to 1,000 lbs).
Will a heavy duty toilet seat fit my toilet?
Of the six picks, the three Big John seats and the Bemis Paramont are each described by their makers as fitting round or elongated bowls; the Bath Royale Executive and the Bemis Assurance are sold by shape, so measure your bowl first. Bath Royale says its seats fit bolt holes 4.5 to 6.5 inches apart, and that skirted bowls need top mount anchors, sold separately.
