Extra Large Bath Mat: 6 Picks by Size, Backing and Washing
Six extra large bath mats, 24 to 36 inches wide and up to 72 long, with each maker's words on the backing, the top material, how to wash it and the price.

You step out of the shower and one foot lands on the mat, the other on wet tile, because the mat is the size of a doormat. Buying one sold as oversized does not settle it: on one maker’s size guide, oversized means 24 by 40 inches. Below are six bath mats that come in 24 by 36 inches or larger, with what each maker says is underneath, how you wash it and the price.

What counts as extra large
Brooklinen’s size guide gives a standard bath mat as 20 by 31 inches and an oversized one as 24 by 40, width by length. The large sizes of the six picks start at that oversized width: 24 inches on the short side, 30 on the Coyuchi, 36 on the Chilewich, and up to 72 inches long. At 36 by 60, the Chilewich covers 2,160 square inches, about three and a half times the 20 by 31 standard (our arithmetic).
The short side is how far out from the tub your feet can land; the long side is how much of the step-out line the mat covers (our reading of how a mat is laid).

The six picks
Gorilla Grip Shag Bath Rug
For a long, washable mat along a tub, start here. The 70 by 24 inch size weighs 4.96 lbs on the page’s spec list, and the menu also sells 36 by 24 ($31.99 to $43.99 by colour) and 60 by 24 ($45.99 to $54.99). The top is chenille “measuring almost one inch thick”, over what Gorilla Grip calls “a durable TP Rubber Backing”; it says its TP Rubber mats “have been third party tested to be washed and dried over and over again”. The care line reads “Machine wash cold. Do not bleach. Tumble dry low.”
Drawbacks: The price moves with colour as well as size. Its spec list also names sizes such as 44 x 26 and 54 x 24 that the size menu does not sell, so order from the menu.
Yimobra Memory Foam Bath Mat
The same 70 inch length as the Gorilla Grip for less: $42.99 at 70 by 24, with 36.2 by 24, 44.1 by 24 and 55.1 by 24 at $30.99, $34.99 and $38.99. The top is what Yimobra calls soft coral velvet over memory foam, and the underside is a “strong and durable PVC backing which helps to prevent shifting and skidding”. Care is a cold machine wash, no chlorine or bleach, then a low tumble or hang dry.
Drawbacks: Its ¾ in thickness appears only on a gallery image, not in the text. One gallery image headlines the underside as “Latex Bottom” while its label and the description say PVC.
Chilewich Heathered Shag Mat
The 3 by 5 foot size is 36 by 60 inches (our conversion), the largest listed surface of the six picks; the 2 by 3 foot size is 24 by 36, and a 2 by 6 foot runner, 24 by 72, is $225. Chilewich says “Shag mats are ideal for bathrooms, outdoor terraces, pool areas, and entryways.” The pile is looped TerraStrand yarns tufted onto vinyl, a quarter inch thick. The page describes that backing twice: as “a sturdy no-slip vinyl backing”, and in its spec list as “Waterproof, non-skid vinyl; no rug pad needed.”
Drawbacks: “Do not machine wash.” Cleaning is vacuuming, shaking out or hosing off, and a deep clean is a hand wash and a full air dry. At $275 for 3 x 5 ft it is the dearest of the six picks, and custom sizes are final sale.
Coyuchi Shag Organic Bath Rug, Fossil
The pick for a wider mat in cotton. The 30 by 50 inch size is six inches deeper on its short side than the rectangular sizes of the four picks that stop at 24 (our arithmetic; Brooklinen’s on its size guide). It is 100% organic cotton, grown and woven in Turkey and GOTS certified, and the page’s only line on the underside is “Flat weave bottom sits flat.” Care is a cold, gentle wash and a low tumble, removed promptly. The Desert Stripe version, sold on its own page, comes at 24 by 60 for $148.
Drawbacks: The page names no rubber, latex or vinyl layer underneath, only a flat-weave bottom. Its details line gives one size, 2’ X 3’, while the menu also sells 30 x 50.
Better Trends Hotel Bath Rug
The pick for a cotton mat you can turn over. The 24 by 40 inch rectangle is tufted 100% cotton, and Better Trends calls it a “two-tone reversible design” that lets you “flip the rug for extended use”. The spec list gives 2370 GSM and a 15 mm mat thickness; the description gives a 10mm pile height. Care reads machine wash.
Drawbacks: No backing layer is named: the spec line reads “Backing : Reversible”. Its long option, a 20 x 60 runner, is narrower than the 24 x 40.
Brooklinen Tufted Cotton Bath Mat, Oversized
The pick for a heavy cotton pile with a backing. Brooklinen sells it in Standard and Oversized, at $55 and $65; the size guide on the listing gives a bath mat as 24 by 40 oversized, which we read as this mat’s Oversized (its Standard could be the guide’s 20 by 31 bath mat or 21 by 34 bath rug). It is 100% cotton in a cut pile weave at 2150 GSM, and the back is listed as “Hotmelt latex gel anti-skid backing”; the description calls it “a non-skid treatment on the bottom”. Brooklinen’s care guide for bath mats says machine wash cold, tumble dry low, do not bleach.
Drawbacks: The size menu says Oversized, not inches, so the 24 x 40 rests on our reading of the size guide. The product page prints no care line of its own.

What the backing words tell you
Four of the six picks name a rubber, PVC, latex or vinyl layer underneath; Coyuchi’s names a flat-weave bottom, and Better Trends’ rug is reversible. The table quotes each maker’s wording; it is not a rating, and not a promise from us that any of these mats will stay put.
Gorilla Grip’s warning and Yimobra’s backing paragraph point the same way. Gorilla Grip’s reads “Place mat on CLEAN DRY SMOOTH FLOOR only. Water under mat can cause it to slip.” Yimobra’s says “Prevent from slipping, please make sure the surface under the mat is smooth, clean and dry”.
The makers also disagree about materials, each in its own favour (our reading). Gorilla Grip says “PVC and hot glue break down as mats are washed”; Yimobra, whose description says PVC, says its backing will hold up “unlike many other brands, whose rubber backing tends to wear and peel off after multiple washes.” We take neither claim as settled.
How to choose
- Measure where your feet land. Stand where you dry off and measure from the tub or shower edge to the far side of your feet. If that is over 24 inches, only two of the six picks have a rectangle that goes deeper: the Coyuchi at 30 and the Chilewich at 36; Better Trends also sells a 30 in round.
- Measure the run you want covered along the tub. The Chilewich runner reaches 72 inches, the Gorilla Grip and Yimobra 70, the Coyuchi 50 (60 in Desert Stripe), Better Trends’ 20 by 60 runner 60 (20 in wide), and Better Trends’ 24 by 40 rectangle and the Brooklinen (24 by 40 on its size guide) 40.
- Check the door. If the mat sits where the bathroom door swings, measure the gap under it. The Chilewich prints 0.25 inches, the Better Trends 15 mm (about 0.59 inches, our conversion), the Gorilla Grip almost one inch and the Yimobra ¾ inch on a gallery image; Coyuchi and Brooklinen print no figure.
- Decide how you will wash it. Five of the six print a machine wash (Brooklinen’s on its care guide); if you would rather not hose off or hand wash a mat, leave out the Chilewich.

Before you order
- Check the size line in your cart. Gorilla Grip prices by colour too; Brooklinen’s menu gives words, not inches.
- Read the warning and care lines before you lay it down.
- Read the returns page before paying.
If you sit to shower, seat widths and ratings are in bariatric shower chair; towels sized by the inch are in oversized bath towels; and the rest of the room is under home and bedroom.
Where these numbers come from
Sizes, materials, backing wording, care lines and prices are from each maker’s product page and product data, read on 1 October 2026, in US dollars, with Brooklinen’s care line from its care guide the same day. Areas, foot-to-inch and millimetre conversions and differences are our arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an extra large bath mat?
There is no fixed size. Brooklinen's size guide gives a bath mat as 20 by 31 inches standard and 24 by 40 oversized. The large sizes listed for the six picks here run from 24 by 36 inches to Chilewich's 3 by 5 foot mat, 36 by 60 inches, and its 2 by 6 foot runner, 24 by 72 (our conversions).
Are extra large bath mats non-slip?
That is each maker's description, not something this guide rates. Of the six picks, four name a backing layer: Gorilla Grip a “durable TP Rubber Backing”, Yimobra PVC (description) that “helps to prevent shifting and skidding”, Brooklinen a “Hotmelt latex gel anti-skid backing” and Chilewich “Waterproof, non-skid vinyl”. Coyuchi's page describes a flat-weave bottom and Better Trends' rug is reversible. Gorilla Grip and Yimobra both tell you to lay the mat on a clean, dry, smooth floor.
Can you machine wash an extra large bath mat?
Five of the six picks print a machine wash: Gorilla Grip and Yimobra (cold, tumble low), Coyuchi (cold, gentle, tumble low), Better Trends (machine wash) and Brooklinen, whose care guide for bath mats says machine wash cold and tumble dry low. Chilewich's shag mat page says “Do not machine wash.” and gives hosing off, or a hand wash and air dry, instead.
Which is the biggest bath mat here?
Of the listed sizes on the six picks, not counting Chilewich's custom option: by area, Chilewich's Heathered Shag Mat in 3 by 5 feet, 36 by 60 inches or 2,160 square inches (our arithmetic); by length, its 2 by 6 foot runner, 24 by 72 inches, then the 70 by 24 inch sizes from Gorilla Grip and Yimobra.
