Standard Bath Towel Size: 27 to 31 by 54 to 58 Inches

You wrap the towel round after a shower and it stops short at the hip, and the label said bath towel, so you assume the towel is the standard and you are not. The towel is not a standard. Five brands each print a size for the thing they call a bath towel, and the long side runs from 54 to 58 inches. Here are the numbers, brand by brand, so you can buy by inches rather than by the word.

Prices are single-colour listings on 20 September 2026 (American Soft Linen on 1 October 2026). Parachute prints its dimensions long side first, so its 56 by 30 bath towel is the 30 by 56 in the table.

Where the word “standard” comes from

Only one of the five defines the word with a number. American Soft Linen’s size guide says: “A standard bath towel size is typically 27 x 54 inches, which is also the most common size used in hotels due to its balance of comfort and practicality.” Its quick-reference chart repeats it as “Standard Size : 27 x 54 inches / Hotel Size : 27 x 54 inches”. That is a supplier describing its own hotel trade, and it is the smallest bath towel on this page. Brooklinen heads its whole size column “Standard” and its FAQ says “A standard Bath Towel works for most people”, so there the word means its own 30 by 58. The number under the word changes with the brand.

So the 27 by 54 is a real size with a real name, and it is the one to check against when a listing says “standard”. Being the smallest, it is also the one that stops at the hip first.

The long side is the one that goes round you

Wrapped the usual way, the long side of the towel is the circumference. A 54-inch towel closes with overlap on a hip that measures well under 54 inches and meets edge to edge at 54; a 58-inch towel gives four more inches, which is the difference between the Weezie or Brooklinen and the American Soft Linen. If the number you get is near or over 54, a bath towel labelled standard will not close, and the bath sheet column is the one to read.

The short side is length top to bottom when wrapped, 27 to 31 inches across the five brands. It decides whether the towel reaches mid-thigh or the knee, and four inches there is less consequential than four inches round.

The bath sheet is where the sizes spread

Four bath sheets are 38 by 67, 39 by 70, 40 by 65 and 40 by 70; American Soft Linen’s guide puts a 35 by 70 it calls a jumbo bath towel below them and a 40 by 80 oversized bath sheet above. Brooklinen’s own FAQ gives the category a floor: “A Bath Sheet is larger (typically 35”x60”+)“. Read the long side: 65 at Brooklinen against 70 at Weezie and Parachute is five inches round, on towels whose short side is 39 or 40. GSM is weight, not size

Grams per square metre says how much cotton is in each square of towel. Brooklinen defines it on its product page: “GSM (grams per square meter) measures how dense and heavy a towel is. Higher GSM = thicker and more absorbent; lower GSM = lighter and faster-drying.” Its Super-Plush is 770, its Plush 500, Parachute’s Organic Plush 750, Weezie’s bath towels 650, American Soft Linen’s lines 550 to 700, and Coyuchi’s Mediterranean is 320 at $68 a bath towel. A heavier towel is not a bigger one; Brooklinen’s 770 and Weezie’s 650 are within an inch of each other in size.

Hand towels and washcloths

Washcloths agree: 13 by 13 at American Soft Linen, Weezie and Brooklinen, 12 by 12 at Parachute. Hand towels do not: 16 by 28 at American Soft Linen, 19 by 30 at Weezie, 20 by 30 at Brooklinen and Parachute. If you are matching a set to a towel bar, the bar width is the number to carry to the shop.
