Oversized Bath Towels: What the Word Does Not Promise

“Oversized” is the towel aisle’s version of a size label, and it is not one. None of the pages we read attaches a standard, a test or a published threshold to the word, and — as it turns out — the more official-sounding category names are not much better.

Here is what the numbers do when you line them up.

The category names do not sort by size

Four brands are quoted in this article, but only three of them publish a larger size at all — Boll & Branch’s page gives a bath towel and nothing above it, so it does not appear in the comparisons below. These are the larger products the other three publish on their own size guides and product pages:

Read the bottom two rows against each other. The product called a Jumbo Bath Towel is 70 inches long. The product called a Bath Sheet is 68. On the dimension that decides whether something wraps around you, the towel beats the sheet — and the sheet is the wider of the two by four inches.

That is not a gotcha about either company; both published their numbers plainly and we are quoting them. It is a caution about shopping by category name. “Bath sheet” is not a size, it is a shelf. This comparison is ours and it covers these three pages only.

What the word “oversized” is attached to here

Of the pages we read, only American Soft Linen attaches it to a published size: “Oversized Bath Sheet” on its 40” x 80” product, which is the largest single item in the table.

So on that page the word does correspond to the biggest thing. That is a usage, not a definition, and it tells you nothing about what another company means when it prints the same word. If you are comparing two listings and both say oversized, you have learned nothing until you find the two pairs of numbers.

The dimension that decides it

If the reason you are looking at bigger towels is coverage, only one of the two numbers is doing that work: the long side, because that is the edge that travels around the body.

Against the smaller sizes those same companies sell — the ones covered in our guide to the standard bath towel size, where the long side runs 54 to 58 inches — the products above sit at 68 to 80. That is the real gap the category is selling, and it is worth converting into your own figure rather than taking on trust:

1. Measure around yourself at the widest point you intend to wrap. Our guide to how to measure your bust applies here too; the technique is the same whether the tape is going around the bust or the hip.
2. Subtract that from the towel’s long side.
3. The remainder is your overlap, and how much you want is your call — we are not going to invent a recommended number, because nobody publishes one.

Parachute describes its own bath sheet as offering “more coverage than a standard towel, making it easy to wrap around your entire body, almost like a blanket.” That is the company’s description of its own product, quoted because it is the clearest published statement of what the category is for, not because we have tested the claim. We have not used any towel in this article.

The disagreement runs the whole length of the range

It would be tidier if only the big end were vague. It is not. The same three pages disagree on the small items too, where there is much less room to disagree in:

• Washcloth: Parachute publishes 12” x 12”; The Company Store and American Soft Linen both publish 13” x 13”.
• Hand towel: Parachute publishes 30” x 20”; The Company Store 16 in. x 30 in.; American Soft Linen 16” x 28”.

An inch on a washcloth is not going to change anyone’s day. The reason it is worth noticing is what it says about the naming: if three companies cannot land on a common figure for a square of cotton, the categories were never sizes to begin with. They are the names of shelves, all the way along.

GSM is a different axis entirely

Two of the pages publish a weight: 560 GSM at The Company Store, 700 GSM at Boll & Branch. GSM is grams per square metre — fabric packed into a given area.

It is easy to read a big GSM number as a big towel, and it is not one. A dense 30 x 54 inch towel is still 54 inches long. Weight affects how a towel feels, how long it takes to dry and how heavy it is to handle wet; it does not move the edge any further around you. Keep the two questions apart and each becomes answerable.

Before you order

• Find the two dimensions, and work out which is the long side — the brands above do not agree on which they print first.
• Do the subtraction against your own measurement.
• Treat “oversized”, “jumbo” and “bath sheet” as shelf labels, not specifications. The same applies to any product sold by a size class rather than a measurement, from an extra wide shower curtain upward.
• Check the size on the page before ordering. Product lines are revised, and every figure here is attributed so you can verify the current one.

None of this ranks the four companies or tells you which towel is good. We have not used them, and a dimension has never told anyone how something feels. What a dimension does tell you is whether the thing reaches — which, for the question that brought you here, is most of the answer.
