Bike for a Heavy Person: 6 Picks and Their Weight Ratings
Six outdoor bikes, three pedal and three electric, with the weight figure each maker prints and how to tell a max rider limit from a payload or a total.

You find a bike you like, scroll to the specs, and the weight figure there is a payload, a total, or missing. Buying the one that looks sturdiest, or the one with heavy duty in its name, does not tell you whether its frame, wheels and seatpost were rated for your weight. Below are six outdoor bikes, three pedal and three electric, whose makers print a weight figure, with what each label covers, the wheel and tire size, and who each one suits.
The short answer
| Pick | Best for | Price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worksman Urban Commuter, step-through | A pedal commuter with the heavy-rider parts fitted | $989 | 450 lb rider (description); carrying capacity 275 lb standard, up to 500 lb with upgrades (spec table) |
| Worksman Big Bones Deluxe 3 Speed | Tall riders, over 6 ft 2 in | $1,059 | 350 lb rider (description), 450 with seatpost and pedal upgrades; carrying capacity 275 lb standard (spec table) |
| Worksman MG-R Heavy Duty | The lowest price and a 14 in step-over | $509 | Carrying capacity 275 lb standard, up to 450 lb with upgrades |
| Velotric Discover 3 | An electric commuter in two frame sizes | $1,999 | 440 lb max bike load |
| Aventon Abound LR | Hauling shopping or a passenger | $1,999 | 440 lb total weight limit, 20 x 3.0 in tires |
| Aventon Aventure 3 Step-Through | Gravel and rough paths | $1,999 | 400 lb total weight limit, 26 x 4.0 in tires |
Rider, payload or total: read the label first
Makers print a weight figure under several names, and they measure different things. A max rider figure is you alone. A payload can be far higher than the rider figure on the same page: the RadRunner Max prints a 420 lb payload and a 275 lb max rider. Across the five Rad Power Bikes pages read for this guide, payloads ran from 315 lb, on the RadExpand 5 Plus, to 420, and max rider figures from 225 on that bike to 290 on the Radster Road. A combined figure can include the bicycle itself: Priority limits its Coast to 275 lb combined, counting rider, bicycle and cargo.
Among the six picks, only the Urban Commuter and Big Bones Deluxe descriptions give a max rider figure; all three Worksman spec tables call theirs Carrying Capacity, and it moves with the upgrades you order. Aventon calls its figure a Total Weight Limit, and the Abound LR’s description calls the same 440 lb a payload capacity. Velotric’s spec lines say Max Bike Load. A Bicycling review excerpt that Velotric quotes on the same page describes the Discover 3’s “440-pound maximum capacity (bike + rider + cargo)”. If that description is right, the bike’s own 61 lb comes off first, leaving 379 lb for you and your bags (our arithmetic). Our rule of thumb: when the label is not max rider, ask the maker for the rider figure before you pay.
| Bike | Weight figure as printed | Wheels and tires | Frame | Rider fit as printed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Worksman Urban Commuter, step-through | 450 lb rider (description); carrying capacity 275 lb standard, up to 500 lb with upgrades (spec table) | 26 x 2.125 in | Step-through, 17.5 in seat mast | Not printed |
| Worksman Big Bones Deluxe | 350 lb rider, 450 lb with upgrades (description); carrying capacity 275 lb standard, up to 500 lb (spec table) | 26 x 2.125 in | 22 in frame, dual top bars | Over 6 ft 2 in, 32 in minimum inseam |
| Worksman MG-R | Carrying capacity 275 lb standard, up to 450 lb with upgrades | 24 x 2.125 in | Step-through, 14 in step-over | Not printed |
| Velotric Discover 3 | 440 lb max bike load | 27.5 x 2.4 in | Step-through, Regular or Large | 5 ft 2 in to 6 ft 7 in, suspension seatpost fitted |
| Aventon Abound LR | 440 lb total weight limit | 20 x 3.0 in | Step-through, one size | 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 3 in |
| Aventon Aventure 3 Step-Through | 400 lb total weight limit | 26 x 4.0 in | Step-through, Regular or Large | 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 1 in |
The six picks
Worksman Urban Commuter Cruiser 3 Speed, Step Through
If you want a pedal bike, start here. The Urban Commuter page says it is rated for riders up to 450 pounds, and it comes with what Worksman’s notes on the same page tell riders over 275 lb to order: a front drum brake and upgraded tires and tubes, here Kevlar-belted tires and puncture-resistant tubes (matching the two is our reading). The saddle is a 13 inch extra-wide sprung one.
Drawbacks: The spec table on the same page gives a Carrying Capacity of up to 500 lb depending on upgrades and 275 lb for the standard version, so get the figure for your order in writing. Three gears, with a foot-operated coaster brake at the back.
Worksman Big Bones DELUXE 3 Speed Cruiser
The Big Bones Deluxe is Worksman’s big and tall cruiser: a 22 inch frame for riders over 6 ft 2 in with a minimum inseam of 32 inches. The description rates the Deluxe model for a 350 lb rider and, with a solid seatpost and pedal upgrades, riders up to 450 lb. Taking those as the solid seatpost (+$40) and N18 pedals (+$22) brings it to $1,121 (our reading and arithmetic); the 7217-EXT pedal extenders (+$36.25) on the page’s options list may also count as a pedal upgrade. A front drum brake, puncture-resistant tubes and a 13 inch saddle are standard. The description lists Kevlar-belted tires as standard; the spec table on the same page lists them as an upgrade, so confirm which your order includes. That spec table gives a Carrying Capacity of up to 500 lb depending on upgrades.
Drawbacks: Made for riders over 6 ft 2 in with at least a 32 inch inseam, so it will not suit shorter riders. No front fender is available for it, and the spec table's Carrying Capacity is 275 lb for the standard version.
Worksman MG-R Unisex Comfort Bicycle, Heavy Duty
The lowest price of the six picks: the MG-R has a 14 inch step-over and 24 x 2.125 inch wheels. Its page lists upgrades by rider weight. Over 260 lb: the front drum brake ($100), sealed crank set ($70), Kevlar-belted tires ($32), puncture-resistant tubes ($20) and the 13 inch extra-wide saddle ($24). Over 300 lb: also the solid seatpost ($40) and N18 pedals ($22). Those seven options on the base bike come to $817 (our arithmetic). The spec table gives a Carrying Capacity of 275 lb for the standard version and up to 450 lb depending on upgrades, without saying which upgrades reach 450, so ask.
Drawbacks: The $509 is the base bike in Electric Blue; the upgrades Worksman lists for heavier riders cost extra. Single speed with a coaster brake unless you add the 3-speed hub, and fenders are not available.
Velotric Discover 3
The commuter among the three e-bike picks, and the one whose height range reaches highest. On the Discover 3 page, the Regular fits 5 ft 2 in to 5 ft 11 in and the Large 5 ft 9 in to 6 ft 7 in with the suspension seatpost fitted; the page gives lower ranges without it. Two spec lines, Max Bike Load and Max Bike Load Capacity, both read 440 lb; the rear rack takes 66 lb. Stand-over height is 400 mm on the Regular and 396 mm on the Large, about 15.6 to 15.7 inches (our conversion).
Drawbacks: The spec table does not say whether the 440 lb includes the 61 lb bike; the Bicycling excerpt Velotric quotes on the same page says it does. The frame comes in step-through only.
Aventon Abound LR
A cargo e-bike with a long rear rack rated to 143 lb, 20 x 3.0 inch tires and a step-through frame in one size for riders 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 3 in. Its spec table gives a Total Weight Limit of 440 lb, the top figure on the six Aventon pages read for this guide, shared with the Abound SR; the Soltera 3 ADV and Level 4 REC Step-Through print 300 lb and the Pace 5 REC Step-Through 330. A passenger seat is an accessory sold separately, and the 440 lb then has to cover you and the passenger together (our reading).
Drawbacks: At 88 lb it is the heaviest of the three e-bike picks. The description calls the 440 lb a payload capacity and the spec table a total weight limit; neither says whether the bike's own weight is inside it.
Aventon Aventure 3 Step-Through
For gravel paths and rough ground, which Aventon lists as all-terrain use: 26 x 4.0 inch puncture-resistant tires, the widest of the six picks, on a step-through frame with a suspension fork. The page gives a Total Weight Limit of 400 lb and a bike weight of 77 lb.
Drawbacks: Its 400 lb is the lowest printed figure of the three e-bike picks, and the Large frame tops out at 6 ft 1 in, the lowest ceiling of the three.

How to choose
- Add up what the bike has to carry. Your weight in riding clothes, plus a bag, a lock and any shopping. That sum has to fit under a payload or total figure, and under a combined figure the bike counts too.
- Pick the frame by height and inseam. Measure your inseam before you look at the Big Bones Deluxe, which asks for 32 inches. If lifting a leg over a bar is the hard part, the MG-R’s 14 inch step-over is the lowest of the three picks whose pages print one; the Velotric’s is 400 mm.
- Pick the tire for the ground you ride. The Worksman bikes run 2.125 inch tires, the Velotric 2.4, the Abound LR 3.0 and the Aventure 3 4.0; Aventon lists the Aventure 3 for all-terrain use.
- Pedal or electric. The three Worksman bikes have one or three gears. The three e-bike picks weigh 61 to 88 lb, which matters if the bike lives upstairs. Their range figures are estimated for a lighter rider: 165 lb on Aventon’s pages and 187 lb on Velotric’s.
- Check the saddle last. Our guides to the most comfortable bike seat and how to measure sit bone width show how to match its width to you.

Before you order
- Get the rider figure in writing for your exact build. Worksman’s figure moves with the options you tick, and the three e-bike spec tables give no max rider figure.
- Price the upgrades before comparing. With the parts their pages list for heavier riders, the MG-R comes to $817 (our arithmetic) and the Big Bones Deluxe to $1,121, taking its “pedal upgrades” as the N18 pedals (our reading and arithmetic).
- If you will ride indoors too, our heavy duty exercise bike guide lists ten models by their published maximum user weight, the max rider figure the three e-bike spec tables leave out.
Where these numbers come from
Weight figures, wheel and tire sizes, frame details and prices are from the makers’ own product pages at Worksman, Velotric, Aventon, Rad Power Bikes and Priority, read on 30 September 2026. Upgrade totals, the 379 lb figure and the millimetre conversion are our arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
How much weight can a bike hold?
Whatever its maker prints for that model, and the label matters as much as the number. On the five Rad Power Bikes pages read for this guide, payloads ran from 315 to 420 lb while the max rider figures on the same pages ran from 225 to 290 lb. Priority gives its Coast 275 lb combined, counting rider, bicycle and cargo.
What bike can hold a 400 lb person?
One whose maker confirms a rider figure of 400 lb or more for the build you order. Of the six picks, the Worksman Urban Commuter page says it is rated for riders up to 450 pounds, and the Big Bones Deluxe page says up to 450 lb with a solid seatpost and pedal upgrades; both spec tables also give a Carrying Capacity of 275 lb for the standard version, so confirm your build. The three e-bikes print 400 or 440 lb as a total or bike load figure, which has to cover you and what you carry, and possibly the bike too; ask the maker for the rider figure.
Why does Worksman print more than one weight figure?
Because the rating depends on the options you order. The spec tables give a Carrying Capacity of 275 lb for the standard version and up to 450 or 500 lb depending on upgrades, and the notes on the same pages say riders over 275 lb should order the drum brake and upgraded tires and tubes. The Urban Commuter comes with those (our reading). The Big Bones Deluxe description lists a front drum brake, Kevlar-belted tires and puncture-resistant tubes as standard, but its spec table lists the Kevlar-belted tires as an upgrade, so confirm your order. On the MG-R they are options.
Is an e-bike's range figure right for a heavier rider?
It is estimated for someone lighter: a 165 lb rider on Aventon's pages and a 187 lb rider on Velotric's. Aventon adds that actual range will vary depending on rider weight, terrain, weather conditions, tire pressure and cadence.
