Couch for a Heavy Person: 6 Sofas and Their Weight Ratings
Six sofas whose makers print a weight rating, 300 to 450 lb per seat or 900 lb in total, and how to read per-seat figures, seat height and seat depth.

A couch that dips in the middle after one winter, or a seat that bottoms out onto the frame when you sit down, is the problem this page is for. Going by how solid it looks in the photos does not help, and the weight rating, when a maker prints one, sits in a spec panel or an FAQ and is sometimes a total for the whole sofa rather than a figure for the seat you sit in. Below are six sofas whose makers print a number, with what that number covers, the seat height and depth where the maker gives them, and who each one suits.
The short answer
| Sofa | Best for | Price (reference) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belffin Uteeran Cloud Modular Sofa | The highest per-seat rating with a higher seat | $920 (loveseat) to $3,980 (10-seat U) | 450 lb per seat, 19.7 in seat height |
| Belffin Merenia Modular Sectional Sofa | A big sectional with springs under the cushions | $1,000 (4-seat L) to $2,180 (8-seat L with console) | 450 lb per seat, pocket and sinuous springs |
| Mcombo VE730 loveseat | Two people in a small room | $900 | 350 lb per seat, 700 lb total |
| Belffin Elke Sectional Sofa | Shorter legs, the shallowest seat depth here | $720 (4-seat L) to $800 (5-seat corner) | 350 lb per seat, 20 in seat depth |
| Floyd Sofa 2.0 Three Seater | A sofa you can take apart and move | $2,190 to $3,840 | 300 lb per seat, steel-reinforced ply frame |
| Mcombo VE727 leather loveseat | Leather, if the maker confirms a per-seat figure | $1,360 | 900 lb, printed as one total |
Per seat or in total: read the number first
A sofa rating comes in one of two forms, and they answer different questions. A per-seat figure is the load the maker says one seat carries. A total is one number for the whole sofa, and on its own it does not tell you how much one seat can take.
The two Mcombo loveseats here show the difference on the same site. The VE730 prints 350 lb per seat and 700 lb in total: two numbers, and the arithmetic works because Mcombo wrote it down. The VE727 prints 900 lb and nothing else. Dividing 900 by the two seats a loveseat implies gives 450, which is our arithmetic, not Mcombo’s rating, and it assumes the load is spread evenly across the sofa, which the page does not say. So treat a total as a question to send the maker, not an answer.
Five of the six give a per-seat figure: the three Belffin dimension panels read “450 lbs / seat”, “450 lbs Per Seat” and “350 lbs Per Seat”, Floyd’s FAQ gives “a tested weight capacity of 300 lb. per seat” for a sofa it says “sits three (3) people comfortably”, and the VE730 is the one above. Only the VE727 gives a total alone.
| Sofa | Rating as printed | Seat height | Seat depth | Frame and support, as the maker describes them |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Belffin Uteeran | 450 lb per seat | 19.7 in | 31.5 in | Solid wood frame, high-resilience foam |
| Belffin Merenia | 450 lb per seat | 18.1 in | 25.6 in | Reinforced frame, sinuous springs, pocket springs in the cushion |
| Mcombo VE730 | 350 lb per seat, 700 lb total | Not in page text | Not in page text | FSC-certified wood frame, S-shaped spring base, centre support leg |
| Belffin Elke | 350 lb per seat | 17.7 in | 20 in | Solid FSC-certified wood frame, memory foam cushions |
| Floyd Sofa 2.0 | 300 lb per seat | 17.5 in | See note | Furniture-grade ply with steel reinforcement, webbed suspension |
| Mcombo VE727 | 900 lb total | Not in page text | Not in page text | Solid wood legs; page heading reads “Elegant Solid Wood Legs and Frame” |
Floyd prints a seat depth of 34 inches, the same figure as the sofa’s overall depth, so we have left it out rather than guess which one it means.

The six sofas
Belffin Uteeran Cloud Modular Sofa
Start here if you want the highest per-seat figure on this page with the highest seat of the four that print a seat height (19.7 in). The Uteeran shares the top rating, 450 lb per seat, with the Merenia. Belffin describes a solid wood frame under high-resilience foam. It sells as a loveseat, an armchair or sectionals of four seats and up, and the rating is given per seat rather than for the configuration.
Drawbacks: The 31.5 inch seat is the deepest in the table above, so shorter legs may not reach the floor with your back against the cushions. Each module ships in its own box.
Belffin Merenia Modular Sectional Sofa
The pick for a family sectional. It carries the same 450 lb per-seat rating as the Uteeran with a shallower 25.6 inch seat depth, and it is the only sofa here whose page describes springs at two levels: a seat deck over sinuous springs, and individually wrapped pocket springs inside the cushion, which Belffin says improve “bounce-back”. Configurations run from four seats to eight, some with a console or a pull-out bed.
Drawbacks: The smallest complete configuration is a four-seat L-shaped sectional; anything smaller is sold as a module. Each module ships in its own box.
Mcombo VE730 Classic Rolled Arm Loveseat
For two people in an apartment. It is the only pick here that prints both the per-seat figure and the total, 350 lb and 700 lb, so you know what each end of the loveseat is rated for. Mcombo describes an FSC-certified wood frame, high-density foam seat cushions 8.3 inches thick on an S-shaped spring base, 4.1 inch solid wood legs and an extra centre support leg. It ships in three boxes that Mcombo says fit through doorways wider than 21 inches.
Drawbacks: The page text gives no seat height, seat depth or seat width, only the overall 67.7 x 35.4 x 36.6 inches, so ask before ordering. Two seats only.
Belffin Elke Sectional Sofa
For shorter legs. Its 20 inch seat depth is the shallowest in the table above, so you can sit back and keep your feet on the floor, and it still carries 350 lb per seat. Belffin describes a solid FSC-certified wood frame and high-density memory foam cushions that it calls medium-firm.
Drawbacks: Belffin itself grades it Entry Level on its own four-step scale. It comes only as four- or five-seat sectionals.
Floyd Sofa 2.0 Three Seater
For a sofa that comes apart for a move. Floyd spells out the frame: engineered wood, which it calls furniture-grade ply, with steel reinforcement and webbed suspension, on 11 gauge bent steel legs. Its FAQ calls 300 lb per seat a “tested” capacity; that answer names no test method. If you weigh well under 300 lb and want a frame whose construction is spelled out, this is the one.
Drawbacks: 300 lb per seat is the lowest per-seat figure on this page. The price is set by the fabric and starts at $2,190.
Mcombo VE727 Napa Leather Loveseat
The largest rating on this page, and the one to read most carefully. Mcombo prints 900 lb for this 84 inch leather loveseat and does not say what one seat carries. If you want leather and the maker confirms a per-seat figure that clears your weight, it is worth a look: top-grain leather on the seats, back and arms, solid wood legs and 5.9 inches of clearance underneath. Until then, the VE730 above is the Mcombo loveseat with a per-seat number.
Drawbacks: The 900 lb figure is a total with no per-seat split, and the page text gives no seat height or depth. The page lists faux leather on the sides and back, and genuine leather on the seats, back and armrests, so ask which parts of the back are which.
How to choose
Start with your weight and the per-seat figure. Choose a sofa whose per-seat rating is above your weight with room to spare, not one you exactly match. If two heavier people will sit side by side, the per-seat figure matters even more than the total, because each of you is on one seat.
Then seat height. Measure a chair or sofa you already get up from without effort, floor to the top of the seat cushion. Among the four here that print a height, the range is 17.5 inches (Floyd) to 19.7 inches (Uteeran). A high rating does not bring a high seat with it: Belffin’s Thara prints the same 450 lb per seat as the Uteeran with a 14.1 inch seat height.
Then seat depth. Sit back in that same chair and measure from the backrest to the front edge of the seat. If the sofa is much deeper than that, you will either sit forward or lean back with your feet off the floor. The Elke at 20 inches suits shorter legs; the Uteeran at 31.5 is built for lounging.
Then width. Measure your hips sitting down, as in our wide office chair guide, and ask the maker for the width of one seat between the arms or cushion seams. Overall width divided by seats is not the same number, because the arms take part of it.

Last, the frame and the springs. A frame material is a description, not a rating. The pages here describe plywood with steel reinforcement, FSC-certified wood and solid wood, over webbing, S-shaped springs or pocket springs. None of those words replaces the per-seat figure, which is the maker’s statement of what the whole construction carries.
Before you order
- Find the rating on the maker’s own page and check whether it says per seat. If it gives only a total, ask for the per-seat figure in writing.
- Get seat height, seat depth and the width of one seat if the page leaves any of them out.
- Measure your doorways and stairs. Belffin ships each module in its own box; the Mcombo loveseats come in one box (VE727) or three (VE730).
- Read the return terms before you assemble it, since a sofa that has been put together may be harder to send back: Belffin, Mcombo, Floyd.
If a sofa is not the answer, a recliner rated for a heavier body is covered in our big and tall recliner guide, and more seating guides are in the seating section.
Where these numbers come from
Every rating, dimension, material and price on this page is from the maker’s own product page, read on 30 September 2026 and linked on each sofa. Prices for the three Belffin sofas and the VE727 were read on 1 October 2026; a range runs from the smallest to the largest sofa configuration named, not counting the Uteeran armchair or loose modules. The per-seat arithmetic for the VE727 is ours, not the maker’s.
Frequently asked questions
How much weight can a couch hold?
Whatever its maker prints for that model; for the six here, that is on the maker's own product page. The six here print 300 to 450 lb per seat, or in one case 900 lb for the whole sofa. A per-seat figure tells you what one seat is rated to carry; a total only tells you that if the maker also gives the split, as Mcombo does for its VE730 loveseat: 350 lb per seat, 700 lb total.
Can I divide a sofa's total weight capacity by the number of seats?
Not unless the maker says so. A total is one number for the whole sofa; it does not say that one seat can carry its share on its own. Mcombo prints both figures for the VE730 and they agree, 350 per seat and 700 in total, but for its 84 inch leather VE727 it prints only 900 lb. When a page gives only a total, ask the maker for the per-seat figure.
What seat height should a couch for a heavy person have?
The height of a seat you already get up from easily, measured from the floor to the top of the seat cushion. The four sofas here that print a seat height run from 17.5 to 19.7 inches. Belffin's Thara carries the same 450 lb per-seat rating as its Uteeran with a 14.1 inch seat, so a high rating does not mean a high seat.
What frame should a sturdy couch have?
The pages here describe furniture-grade plywood with steel reinforcement (Floyd), FSC-certified wood (the Mcombo VE730 and Belffin Elke) and solid wood (the Belffin Uteeran), over webbing, S-shaped springs or pocket springs. The frame material is a description, not a rating. The per-seat weight figure is the maker's statement of what the whole construction carries, so read that first.
