What to read on a listing before you dance in it
Three lines on a product page tell you more about a night on the dance floor than the photos do.
- Stretch. Look for the brand’s own stretch label and for spandex (or elastane) in the fabric line. A sequin shell with spandex only in the lining is a different dress from a knit with spandex in the fabric itself.
- Length. A mini on a model is not a mini on you. Some listings print a length in inches; some print nothing.
- What holds it up. Sleeves, a high neck or a tank give a dress something to hang from when your arms go up; a strapless top relies on boning and grip (our reading). Strapless dresses are left out of this list on purpose.
The six picks
Rebdolls Kendra Draped Bodycon Mini Dress
If you want to move without thinking about your dress, start here. Rebdolls lists the Kendra as High Stretch, bodycon, a square-neck tank with a draped detail, in a medium-weight fabric of 95% polyester and 5% spandex, and calls the fit “True To Size”. Of the six picks it is the lowest-priced one that runs to 5X (30-32), which Rebdolls’ size chart gives as a 60 to 65-inch chest, a 53 to 58-inch waist and 63 to 68-inch hips. It goes in the washing machine.
Drawbacks: Red only, and the listing prints no length, so you cannot check where the hem lands before it arrives. It is a solid, medium-weight fabric, not a sequin or metallic one.
Rebdolls Eve Draped Mini Dress
The pick if you want your arms covered and a dress that still gives. The Eve is a bodycon mini with a high neck, long sleeves, a knot detail and a draped tie, marked High Stretch. Rebdolls’ fabric line reads “90% Nylon 10% Spandex”, the highest spandex share in a main fabric of the six picks, while the same list also describes it as “Solid Print Stretch Polyester”. Sizes and size chart are the same as the Kendra’s.
Drawbacks: More than twice the Kendra's price (our arithmetic), purple only, no length printed, and the listing names the fabric two ways.
Fashion Nova Brook Sequin Mini Dress
The lowest price of the six, and the one for all-over sequins with your arms covered. It is a silver sequin mini with a deep V-neckline, long balloon sleeves and ruching, a back zipper and a lining. The listing marks it Stretch, with a self fabric of 97% polyester and 3% spandex over a 100% polyester lining. Long sleeves mean no straps to slide off when you lift your arms (our reading).
Drawbacks: Stops at 3X. The listing prints no length and no care line, and a deep V-neckline needs a bra plan.
Fashion Nova Zoey Feathered Sequin High Neck Mini Dress
The shortest length printed among the six picks: feathered sequins with feather trim, a high neckline and no sleeves, in Black or Gold. Fashion Nova gives it as Length = 31”, marks it Stretch, and lists a 100% polyester self over a 97% polyester, 3% spandex lining. A high neck instead of a strapless top leaves nothing to hitch up between songs (our reading).
Drawbacks: Stops at 3X. The 31-inch length is not tied to a size, the self fabric lists no spandex (it sits in the lining), there is no care line, and the Gold colour is priced differently, at $37.99.
BloomChic Sequin Fringe Sleeveless Mini Party Dress
The pick if you are a 5X or 6X and want sequins: sequin fringe, sleeveless, pull-on, with side pockets, in sizes 10/M to 30/6X. BloomChic’s 30/6X is a 61.8 to 65.7-inch bust, a 55.9 to 59.8-inch waist and 65.7 to 70.1-inch hips; with the other BloomChic pick, that is the largest size of the six picks. Its garment chart prints a length for every size, from 36.2 inches at 10/M to 41.7 inches at 28/5X and 30/6X, so you can check the hem before you order.
Drawbacks: Black only and hand wash in cold water. The spandex is in the lining, not the shell. At 41.7 inches in the two largest sizes it runs longer than the word mini suggests (our reading).
BloomChic Sequin One Shoulder Long Sleeve Mini Party Dress
A sequin mini that BloomChic’s name calls one shoulder and its tags call Cold Shoulder, with a long lantern sleeve, in a fit-and-flare cut that pulls on, with side pockets. It shares the fringe dress’s sizes and body chart at $6.00 less (our arithmetic), and its garment chart runs from 36.6 inches long at 10/M to 42.1 inches at 28/5X and 30/6X.
Drawbacks: Black only and hand wash in cold water. The lining line lists two blends, 93% polyester with 7% spandex and 95% polyester with 5% spandex, without saying which part is which.

How to choose
- Measure first, then pick the brand. If you have not measured lately, here is how to measure your bust, waist and hips. Bust up to 53 inches, waist up to 46 and hips up to 56: that is the top of Fashion Nova’s 3X, and all six dresses run at least that far. Bust up to 65, waist up to 58 and hips up to 68: Rebdolls’ 5X and the two BloomChic dresses. Bust up to 65.7, waist up to 59.8 and hips up to 70.1: the BloomChic pair only.
- Do not order by the letter. A 3X is a 51 to 53-inch bust at Fashion Nova, a 51 to 55-inch chest at Rebdolls and a 50 to 53.9-inch bust at BloomChic.
- Pick the stretch you need. For a dress that will be pulled and twisted all night, the two Rebdolls dresses are the ones marked High Stretch. The Fashion Nova pair are marked Stretch; the BloomChic pair have spandex only in the lining.
- Decide how much arm you want covered. Long sleeves: the Eve and the Brook; the BloomChic one-shoulder dress has a long sleeve, so check its photos for how much arm is covered. Sleeveless: the Kendra (a tank), the Zoey (a high neck) and the BloomChic fringe dress.
- Zip or pull-on. Both BloomChic dresses pull on over your head, and both Fashion Nova dresses close with a back zipper. The two Rebdolls listings name no closure, so look at the back-view photos before ordering.
- Check the hem against your own body. Measure from the top of your shoulder to where you want the hem and compare it with the Zoey’s 31 inches or BloomChic’s figure for your size. Neither the Zoey’s listing nor BloomChic’s size table says where the measurement starts, so treat it as a guide.
- Plan the shoes too. If you will be on your feet all night and they are wide, see wide width heels.

- Check the price for your colour and size in the cart. The prices above are without any promo code and are a reference only; Fashion Nova prices the Zoey high neck differently by colour.
- Check the care line before the night, not after. Both Rebdolls dresses are machine wash. Both BloomChic dresses say hand wash in cold water, turn inside out, do not tumble dry and do not dry clean. The two Fashion Nova listings print no care line.
