Plus Size Mother of the Bride Dresses: 6 Picks With Sleeves
Six plus size mother of the bride dresses with sleeves: the sizes each brand sells, its largest size in inches, fabric and length, and one drawback for each.

You know the date and the bridesmaids’ colour, and the dresses in the mother-of-the-bride section either stop two sizes short of yours or leave your arms bare. Ordering a size down and planning to have it let out is a gamble: one plus-size formalwear maker’s size chart warns that a dress can usually be taken in but cannot always be let out. Below are six dresses that all come with sleeves, the sizes each brand sells, the bust, waist and hip of its largest size, and what each is made of and how long it is.

You choose first, so set the colour
Traditionally the bride’s mother chooses her outfit first, so yours is the dress the groom’s mother works around. The same guidance gives the rules: avoid colours the same as or very similar to the bride’s and bridesmaids’ dresses; the two mothers wear different colours, and variations on the wedding colour scheme are fine as long as each mother’s dress is distinct; take a swatch of the bridesmaids’ fabric, or a description of its colour, when you shop. Length is a personal choice, even for formal weddings, and the mothers do not have to wear equal lengths, although many do, feeling it looks more harmonious, especially in wedding photos.
Once you have ordered, send the groom’s mother a photo and the colour name. Her side of the same decision, with seven dresses that do not repeat any of these six, is in mother of the groom dresses plus size.

The six picks
Alex Evenings Plus Bethany Glitter & Lace Scoop-Neck Jacket Dress
The pick if you want the classic jacket-dress look. It pairs glitter lace with satin: a scalloped lace bodice and a matching open jacket over a flowing A-line skirt, and the listing names mothers of the bride among the occasions it suits. Its subtitle is “Three-Quarter Sleeve Floor-Length Evening Gown”, and the fit details give 59 inches from top of shoulder to hem on a 14W, moderate stretch, and polyester, nylon and spandex. It comes in navy, eggplant, cornflower, blush and taupe, the widest colour choice of the six picks. The brand says it runs true to size and suggests sizing down if you are between sizes; the model is 5’9” in a 16W.
Drawbacks: It stops at 24W, a 53-inch bust and 56-inch low hip on the brand's chart. The fit details say no bra cups, the listing gives no lining detail, and care is hand wash in cold water and lay flat to dry, with a separate note on glitter shedding.
Mac Duggal Navy Sheer Long Sleeve Beaded Top Satin Gown (Plus)
For a black tie or evening wedding where you want long sleeves. It pairs a sheer, beaded top, a high neckline and long sheer sleeves with satin in 100 percent polyester, fully lined, approx. 60 inches from top of shoulder to bottom hem. Sizes run US 12W to US 26W. Mac Duggal’s size chart labels its rows in plain numbers without a W; its 26 row is a 56-inch bust, 50-inch waist and 59-inch hip, and we read the 26W as that row. If you fall between two sizes, the chart says to pick the smaller for a tighter fit or the larger for a more relaxed one.
Drawbacks: At $498 it is the most expensive of the six picks. It comes in one colour, which the listing calls Midnight, and the listing does not give care instructions.
Kiyonna Eternal Embroidered Bodice Evening Gown
Start here if your bust is over 56 inches. Kiyonna’s size chart puts the 5X at a 61 to 66-inch bust, 55.5 to 60.5-inch waist and 66.5 to 71.5-inch hip, the largest measurements of the six picks (our arithmetic against the other five charts). The gown has an embroidered mesh bodice, sheer long sleeves with elastic cuffs, a ruched mesh waistband and a flowing skirt (mesh in the description, chiffon in the image descriptions), 59 inches long on a 1X. It is made in the USA, and the listing names the mother of the bride or groom among the people it is for.
Drawbacks: Colour choice is three named colourways, Floral Frolic, Moonlit Garden and Floral Flare, and the image description for Floral Frolic is a black gown with blue and purple floral embroidery, so check each against the wedding palette. Dry clean. The page gives two neckline labels: boat neckline in the description, jewel neck in the details.

Adrianna Papell Plus Size Hand Beaded Short Sleeve Floral Godet Gown
The beaded gown of the six, for an evening or formal wedding. It has allover hand-sewn floral beading on mesh, a sheer illusion yoke, no waist seam and a mermaid skirt with godets, in 100 percent polyester with a 100 percent polyester lining. The listing’s only length figure is 45.00 inches, labelled “Natural Waist”; the description calls it a long gown, and the model is 5’11”. On the brand’s size guide, 26W is a 54-inch bust, 48-inch waist and 58.5-inch hip.
Drawbacks: The sleeves are short: cap sleeves in the description, Short Sleeve in the spec list, so they cover less of the arm than the other five picks (our reading). Spot clean only, and this listing is French blue only.
Adrianna Papell Plus Size Three Quarter Bell Sleeve Sheath Midi Dress
The pick for an afternoon ceremony or a lunch reception, and the lowest price of the six. It is a crepe sheath with a surplice collar and three-quarter sleeves finished in layered organza “handkerchief bell cuffs”. The spec list gives 43.00 inches from top of shoulder to hem, Little Stretch, a bra type of Regular Bra and a 100 percent polyester knit lining. It shares the 14W to 26W range and the size guide of the beaded gown above.
Drawbacks: The name says midi and the description says knee length; at 43 inches it is the shortest of the six picks, so it suits a daytime wedding better than black tie (our reading). Dry clean, and this listing is cabernet only.
Sydney's Closet Midnight Magic Black Maxi Dress Sleeves (CE2617)
The pick if your size is a number above 32: it is sold in sizes 14 to 36, the highest numbered sizes of the six. Sydney’s Closet’s size chart makes a 36 a 65-inch bust, 60-inch waist and 68-inch hip; the chart runs to 40, but this dress stops at 36. It is black chiffon with a band of hot-fix rhinestones at the waist, a V-neckline front and back, long sheer cape sleeves and an A-line skirt; the details list a lined bodice, a skirt fully lined in satin, unlined sleeves and bra-friendly straps. The model is 5’8” in a size 16, and the chart says to size up if you are between sizes.
Drawbacks: Black is the only colour, so check it against the wedding's colour plan before you order. The page calls it both Maxi/Ankle length and floor-length, and its 60 inches is measured hollow to hem, not from the shoulder. Spot clean only.

“Not stated” means the product page gives no lining line.
How to choose
- By your bust and hip in inches, not your size label. Measure first with how to measure your bust, then read the largest-size column and check the waist and hip on the same row. Over a 53-inch bust, the Alex Evenings dress no longer reaches you; over 54, the two Adrianna Papell picks drop out; over 56, only Kiyonna and Sydney’s Closet remain; over 65, only Kiyonna’s 5X, which runs to 66 (our arithmetic on the charts above). A Kiyonna 5X (30-32) reaches a larger bust, waist and hip than a Sydney’s Closet 36 (our arithmetic), so a higher number is not always more room.
- By the time and the dress code. Emily Post says long dresses are fine for any wedding from noon on; five of the six picks are long. For a daytime or less formal wedding, the knee-length Adrianna Papell sheath; for an evening or black tie wedding, one of the five long picks. What the codes on the invitation mean is in black tie vs white tie.
- By your height. The lengths are measured from different points: top of shoulder for the Alex Evenings, Mac Duggal and Adrianna Papell sheath figures, hollow to hem for Sydney’s Closet, a length given only as 59 inches on a 1X for Kiyonna, and a figure labelled “Natural Waist” for the godet gown. Measure a long dress you own the same way; Alex Evenings’ length chart puts plus long at 57 to 60 inches.
Before you order
- Leave time. Order at least two to three months ahead and allow at least two weeks for alterations.
- Read each brand’s between-sizes rule. Alex Evenings says size down, Sydney’s Closet says size up, and Mac Duggal and Adrianna Papell say smaller for a closer fit and larger for a more relaxed one.
- Try the sheer sleeves with your own bra. The Mac Duggal, Kiyonna and Sydney’s Closet sleeves are all described as sheer.
- Read each store’s returns page before you buy, and try the dress on with your wedding shoes.
Where these numbers come from
Prices, sizes, fabrics, lengths and lining are copied from each brand’s product page and product data, and the measurements from each brand’s size chart, read on 1 October 2026, in US dollars. Etiquette points are from Emily Post’s attire tips for the mothers, and comparisons between charts are our arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
Does the mother of the bride choose her dress first?
Traditionally, yes: Emily Post's guidance gives the bride's mother the honour of selecting her outfit first. The two mothers then wear different colours from each other, and both avoid colours the same as or very similar to the bride's and bridesmaids' dresses.
Does the mother of the bride have to wear a long dress?
No. Emily Post calls the length a personal choice, even for formal weddings, and says long dresses and skirts are fine for any wedding from noon on. Of the six picks here, five are long and the Adrianna Papell bell sleeve sheath is knee length.
What sizes do plus size mother of the bride dresses come in?
Among these six picks: 14W to 24W at Alex Evenings, US 12W to US 26W at Mac Duggal, 14W to 26W at Adrianna Papell, 0X (10-12) to 5X (30-32) at Kiyonna, and 14 to 36 at Sydney's Closet. Compare inches, not labels: on the two brands' charts, Kiyonna's 5X runs to a 66-inch bust and 71.5-inch hip, more than the 65 and 68 inches of Sydney's Closet's size 36 (our arithmetic).
When should the mother of the bride order her dress?
Emily Post's advice is at least two to three months ahead of the wedding, with at least two weeks allowed for alterations.
