Match the dress to the card

The codes come from the two etiquette guides. Emily Post defines semi-formal for women as “Short afternoon or cocktail dress”, “A little black dress”, “Long dressy skirt and top” or “Dressy separates”, with one timing rule: “if the event is later than 6 in the evening, you’ll want to err on the side of formality.” Black tie is “Formal (floor length) evening gown”, “Dressy cocktail dress” or “Your dressiest ‘little black dress’”, and black tie optional lets women “choose either a formal evening gown, a shorter cocktail dress, or dressy separates.” Debrett’s files cocktail attire under “smart frocks” or “party dress”, where women “can choose whatever dress/trouser combination they feel will make them look chic and glamorous”, and for black tie says knee-length cocktail dresses are the most popular choice.

The size rule

David’s Bridal writes the rule for the wedding party and it holds for guests: “Order based on your largest measurement. If your bust falls in a size 12 and your hips fall in a size 14, order the 14. Letting out a seam is much harder than taking one in.” Its second rule is the one people break in a five-week window: “do not buy for a body you are planning to have. Order based on your measurements right now.” And its warning on labels: “Bridal sizing typically runs one to two sizes smaller than regular clothing.”

Kiyonna prints the numeric range beside each letter, so a 3X is a 22 to 24 on the label itself; Adrianna Papell’s plus gowns are numbered 14 to 26 with a chart to 30W; Universal Standard’s Zadie runs 00 to 40 in one line. When to order

The calendar runs backwards from the wedding, and each step is set by the brand’s own pages rather than by a rule of thumb.

1. Delivery. Check the shipping page for the style you chose before you buy; a dress in stock and a made-to-order gown are different clocks. David’s Bridal’s advice to brides is to “factor in lead time plus any alterations appointments when planning your order date”, and that logic is the same for a guest.
2. Try-on, within days of arrival. With the shoes and underwear you will wear. This is the step that turns a wrong size into an exchange rather than a disaster.
3. Alterations or exchange. A hem or a taken-in waist needs a tailor’s calendar; an exchange needs the returns window, which you read before paying, not after.
4. The date. Anything that has not cleared steps two and three by a week out needs a fallback in the wardrobe.
