Wide Dining Chairs: Five Picks by Seat Width and Capacity
Five dining chairs with seats 19 to 22 inches wide and maker ratings of 331 to 500 lb, armless and with arms, plus how to check seat height against your table.

The dining chair that looked generous in the photo turns out to have a 17 inch seat, the edges press into your hips, and you cannot find what it will hold anywhere on the listing. Buying the chair with arms because it looks roomier can make that worse, because the arms can take that room. Below are five dining chairs, three armless and two with arms, with the seat width, seat height and weight capacity that Modway prints for each, and who each one suits.
The short answer
| Chair | Best for | Price (reference) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modway Pristine (set of 2) | The widest seat of the five picks | $231–$318 (set of 2) | 22 in seat, 500 lb, armless |
| Modway Cambridge (set of 2) | Longer thighs | $260–$312 (set of 2) | 21.5 in wide, 20.5 in deep, 500 lb |
| Modway Baronet | Buying one chair at a time | $184 | 21 in seat, 500 lb |
| Modway Imogen (set of 2) | Arms, on a seat 20 in or wider | $273–$328 (set of 2) | 20–21.5 in seat, 331 lb |
| Modway Vista | Arms that slide under a table, rated 500 lb | $267 | 19 in seat, arms 25.5 in high |
What the width on the page measures
A chair page can print three widths: the whole chair, the seat, or the space between the arms. Only the last two are the room your hips get. Modway’s spec lists give a “Seat dimensions” line for all five picks, but none says where across the seat it is taken.
On an armless chair, the seat width is the whole story, unless the frame climbs up the sides: check the photos for wings or rails at hip height. Arms are where the difference shows. Castlery sells its Sonia dining chair both ways: the armless one lists a seatable width of 20.1 inches, and the arm chair version lists 17.7 inches, though at 25.6 inches it is the wider chair overall. Same seat depth, same 19.9 inch seat height, 2.4 inches less room for your hips (our arithmetic).
The weight figure is labelled three ways across the five picks: Weight Capacity, Chair Weight Capacity, and on the Imogen, Dining Side Chair Weight Capacity. None of the five labels says static or dynamic, so leave room between your weight and the number.

The five chairs
Modway Pristine Upholstered Fabric Dining Chairs (set of 2)
The widest seat of the five picks: Modway lists the seat at 22 inches wide and 19.5 deep, and the page also gives a cushion width of 23.5 inches. The description ends “Weight Capacity: 500 lbs.” It is armless, with a solid rubberwood frame and wood-framed backrest, so there are no arms at the sides. The $231 is the Light Gray pair and $318 the Beige pair. Check your table first: on a table with 27 inches of clearance underneath, a 21 inch seat leaves 6 inches for your thighs (our arithmetic).
Drawbacks: At 21 inches it has the highest seat of the five picks, which leaves the least room under a table. Priced as a pair; assembly required.
Modway Cambridge Upholstered Fabric Dining Chairs (set of 2)
The deepest seat of the five picks, at 20.5 inches deep and 21.5 wide, which suits you if your thighs overhang a shallower chair. The feature list prints “Chair Weight Capacity: 500 lbs”. At 19 inches, the seat sits 2 inches lower than the Pristine (our arithmetic), so it leaves more room under a table. $260 for the Light Gray pair; Beige and Gray are $312.
Drawbacks: The description says solid rubberwood side rails connect the backrest to the seat cushion, so look at the photos and check that they clear your hips at the back. Priced as a pair.
Modway Baronet Button Tufted Fabric Dining Chair
The pick if you want to buy chairs one at a time, or need a single wider chair for one seat at the table. It is a tufted, high-backed Parsons chair with a 21 inch wide seat, 18 inches deep and 19.5 high, and the feature list prints “Chair Weight Capacity: 500 lbs”. It is $184 a chair, so you can mix it with chairs you already own, or put it at the head of the table. The 4 inch cushion sits on a solid wood and MDF frame.
Drawbacks: The page disagrees with itself on the overall size: the spec list gives 21 inches deep by 25 wide, a product image labels it 25 inches D by 21 inches L, and the linked dimension drawing prints 21 inches across the front view and 19 inches where the spec list gives a 19.5 inch seat height. Assembly required.
Modway Imogen Performance Velvet Barrel Dining Chairs (set of 2)
The pick if you want arms and a seat of 20 inches or more. On this barrel chair the curved back carries round into the arms (our reading of the photos), and Modway prints the seat width as a range, 20 to 21.5 inches, without saying where each end is measured. The seat is 20 inches deep and 20 high, under a 5.5 inch cushion. The description’s last line reads “Dining Side Chair Weight Capacity: 331 lbs.” even though the chair has arms. The Chocolate Brown pair is $273 and the Alabaster pair $328.
Drawbacks: Rated 331 lb, the lowest figure of the five picks. Its arms are 28.5 inches high, so they will not tuck under a table whose underside is lower than that.
Modway Vista Dining Armchair
The pick if you need arms to push up from and a 500 lb rating: the description ends “Weight Capacity: 500 lbs.” The armrests are solid wood on a powder-coated metal frame, 25.5 inches from the floor, and the chair is 22.2 inches wide overall. Of the two picks with arms, it is the one whose arms are low enough to slide under a table with 27 inches of clearance (our arithmetic). Its 18.5 inch seat is the lowest of the five picks, which helps if your feet do not rest flat on the floor in a taller chair. It is $267 a chair.
Drawbacks: The 19 inch seat is the narrowest of the five picks, and the page does not say whether it is measured between the arms. Assembly required.
| Chair | Weight figure, as printed | Seat width | Seat depth | Seat height | Arm height | Overall width | Price (reference) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pristine | 500 lb (Weight Capacity) | 22 in | 19.5 in | 21 in | No arms | 23.5 in (spec list); 23 in (product image) | $231–$318 a pair |
| Cambridge | 500 lb (Chair Weight Capacity) | 21.5 in | 20.5 in | 19 in | No arms | 21.5 in | $260–$312 a pair |
| Baronet | 500 lb (Chair Weight Capacity) | 21 in | 18 in | 19.5 in | No arms | 25 in (spec list); see Baronet drawbacks | $184 |
| Imogen | 331 lb (Dining Side Chair Weight Capacity) | 20–21.5 in | 20 in | 20 in | 28.5 in | 25.2 in | $273–$328 a pair |
| Vista | 500 lb (Weight Capacity) | 19 in | 18 in | 18.5 in | 25.5 in | 22.2 in | $267 |
How to choose: four numbers you can measure at home
- Seated hip width, against seat width. Sit on a hard, flat chair and measure straight across the widest part of your hips; our wide office chair guide has the full method. Buy a seat wider than that number, not equal to it. Read your number against the seat widths: the Vista only if you measure under 19 inches, the Imogen under 20 (the low end of its range), the Baronet under 21, the Cambridge under 21.5 and the Pristine under 22. If you measure 22 or more, none of the five will do, and our bariatric chair guide covers chairs with 30 inch seats.
- Your weight, against the figure. Four picks print 500 lb and the Imogen prints 331. Keep a margin below whichever you choose.
- The underside of your table, against seat height and arm height. Most dining tables are 28 to 30 inches tall, and the same guide asks for at least 27 inches from the floor to the underside of the table, warning that a thick apron cuts into that. Measure yours, then subtract each seat height: on exactly 27 inches, the picks leave from 6 inches (Pristine) to 8.5 inches (Vista) for your thighs (our arithmetic). Then compare the arm heights: the guide warns that arms which hit the apron keep the chair from sliding in, which matters at a small table where chairs have to tuck away. If the chairs will stand on a thick rug, the guide adds that it can raise the seat slightly and make chairs harder to slide, so measure with the rug down.
- Back of your hips to the back of your knee, against seat depth. Sit with your back against a wall and measure along your thigh. The depths here run from 18 inches (Baronet and Vista) to 20.5 (Cambridge). A seat a little shorter than your number keeps the front edge off the back of your knees; a much shorter one leaves your thighs hanging over.

Before you order
- Check whether the price is for one chair or two. The Pristine, Cambridge and Imogen are sold as pairs, so a pair of Pristine chairs works out at $115 to $159 a chair (our arithmetic); the Baronet and Vista are priced per chair.
- Check the color you want. Prices above are without any promo code, differ by color on three of the five picks, and are a reference only.
- Plan for assembly. The Pristine, Baronet and Vista pages say assembly required, and the Imogen page says easy to assemble.
- Read the return terms before paying, including who pays return shipping on a large box.

Where these numbers come from
Seat sizes, weight figures and prices are from Modway’s product pages, read on 1 October 2026; the seatable widths are from Castlery’s two Sonia pages and the table heights from the furniture guide linked above, read the same day. Differences and per-chair prices are our arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
How wide is a wide dining chair seat?
The five picks here print seat widths from 19 to 22 inches: Pristine 22, Cambridge 21.5, Baronet 21, Imogen 20 to 21.5 and Vista 19. None of the five pages says where on the seat that width is taken, so for a chair with arms, measure between the arms yourself or ask the seller.
What weight capacity do these dining chairs print?
Four of the five picks print 500 lb: Pristine and Vista as Weight Capacity, Cambridge and Baronet as Chair Weight Capacity. The Imogen barrel chair prints 331 lb, labelled Dining Side Chair Weight Capacity. None of the five labels says static or dynamic.
Are dining chairs with arms narrower?
They can be, because the arms take part of the width. One maker sells the same dining chair both ways: the armless version lists a seatable width of 20.1 inches, the arm chair 17.7 inches, while the arm chair is 25.6 inches wide overall. Read the seat or seatable width, not the overall width.
Will a wide dining chair fit under my table?
Measure from the floor to the underside of your table, or its apron. One furniture guide asks for at least 27 inches there. On a table with exactly 27 inches, these picks leave 6 to 8.5 inches between seat and table (our arithmetic), and only the Vista's 25.5 inch arms would slide under.
