Heavy Duty Bar Stools: Five Picks Rated 400 to 800 lb

Five bar and counter stools rated 400 to 800 lb with seats 16.75 to 18.5 inches wide, plus how to check seat width and height against your counter or bar.

Cover card reading “Heavy Duty Bar Stools: Five Picks Rated 400 to 800 lb” over a white kitchen with cream upholstered stools along a marble-topped counter

The stool at the kitchen counter creaks every time you shift, and the seat ends a couple of inches before your hips do. Buying by the weight rating alone does not fix the second part: Flash Furniture rates a 30 inch backless metal barstool at 500 lb, and its product sheet gives that seat as 12 by 12 inches. So the five stools below come with the seat width, depth and height Flash prints for each, as well as the rating, and who each one suits.

The short answer

Stool Best for Price (reference) Rating, seat width
Flash swivel bucket seat barstool The widest seat of the five, and a swivel $98.84–$109 at BizChair 500 lb, 18.5 in
Flash HERCULES School House Back wood barstool Tied highest rating (800 lb), no assembly $132–$138 at BizChair 800 lb, 17 in
Flash Ladder Back wood barstool The deepest seat, padded $117–$121 at BizChair 800 lb, 16.75 in
Flash Marseille bistro stool A counter-height version, indoors or out $128 bar, $119 counter, at BizChair 600 lb static, 17 in
Flash Lila rattan barstool Arms to push up from $109 at BizChair 400 lb static, 17 in

The rating is not the room

A stool’s weight figure tells you what the frame is rated for. It says nothing about how much seat there is under you. The 12 inch square seat above shares its 500 lb figure with the swivel bucket seat below, whose seat is 18.5 inches wide. So read two numbers on every listing: the weight figure, and the seat size.

On Flash’s pages the seat width is not in the spec list, which gives the overall width and the seat depth. It is in the product sheet linked from each page (View/Save Product PDF), in the PRODUCT MEASUREMENTS line, after “Seat Size”. The widths in this article come from those sheets.

The labels differ too. The Marseille and Lila pages print “Static Weight Capacity”. The swivel stool’s page says “Weight Capacity” and its product sheet says “static weight”. The two 800 lb wood stools say “weight capacity” on both, without static or dynamic. Leave room between your weight and whichever figure you buy against (our suggestion).

The five stools

Flash sells to trade buyers and its pages show “Log In to See Pricing”, so the prices below are from BizChair, read on 14 October 2026 without a promo code. The links on each stool go to Flash’s page, which has the full spec list and the product sheet.

Flash Metal Barstool with Swivel Bucket Seat

$98.84–$109 at BizChairPrice for reference only500 lb · seat 18.5 in wide, 15.5 in deep, 31 in high · 4 in padded seat · swivels 360°View it on the brand's site →

The widest seat of the five: the product sheet gives it as 18.5 inches wide and 15.5 deep, on a 4 inch vinyl seat with what Flash calls a bucket shape. It turns a full 360 degrees, so you can turn to the side to get on and off. The page prints “500 lb. Weight Capacity” and the sheet “holds up to 500 pounds static weight”. Black is $98.84 at BizChair; other colors run to $109.

Drawbacks: The back is short: 12.5 inches from the seat, and the spec list calls it a low back while the description says mid-back. At 31 inches it is one of the two tallest seats here. Assembly required.

Flash HERCULES School House Back Wood Barstool

$132–$138 at BizChairPrice for reference only800 lb · seat 17 in wide, 15.75 in deep, 29.5 in high · no assemblyView it on the brand's site →

The highest figure here, shared with the Ladder Back below: the sheet says the mortise and tenon construction with metal wood screw reinforcements holds up to 800 lb. It is solid European beech, comes assembled, and has leg braces and a footrest. The seat is 17 inches wide and 15.75 deep, at 29.5 inches, which is inside the 28 to 32 inch range one guide gives for a 40 to 42 inch bar. Walnut and Mahogany are $132 at BizChair; Black, Antique White and Antique Copper $138.

Drawbacks: The seat is bare wood, 1 inch thick, with no padding. The 800 lb figure is not labelled static or dynamic.

Flash Ladder Back Wooden Restaurant Barstool

$117–$121 at BizChairPrice for reference only800 lb · seat 16.75 in wide, 16.75–17 in deep, 31 in high · 2.5 in padded seatView it on the brand's site →

The pick if your thighs run past the front of a shallow seat: at 16.75 to 17 inches it is the deepest seat here, with 2.5 inches of foam under vinyl, or a wood seat if you prefer. Like the School House Back, it is beech and rated 800 lb (“holds up to 800 lbs. weight capacity” on the sheet), with no static or dynamic label. Vinyl seats are $117 at BizChair, wood seats $121.

Drawbacks: At 16.75 inches its seat is the narrowest of the five. Flash gives two seat depths: 17 inches in the spec list, 16.75 in the product sheet. Assembly required.

Flash Marseille Indoor/Outdoor Bistro Stool

$128 (bar), $119 (counter) at BizChairPrice for reference only600 lb static · seat 17 in wide, 16.25 in deep · 30.25 in (bar) or 25.75 in (counter) high · no assemblyView it on the brand's site →

The only one of the five sold at counter height as well as bar height: the counter version has a 25.75 inch seat, the bar version 30.25, both 17 inches wide and 16.25 deep. Flash prints “Holds up to 600 LBS. Static Weight Capacity” for both, and says the frame is aluminum that will not rust, so it can go on a patio. It comes assembled. The bar stool is $128 at BizChair and the counter stool $119.

Drawbacks: The seat and back are textilene, with a 2 inch seat rather than a cushion. Each version has a fixed seat height, so order the one that matches your counter or bar.

Flash Lila Indoor-Outdoor Rattan Barstool

$109 at BizChairPrice for reference only400 lb static · seat 17 in wide, 14.5 in deep, 29 in high · armsView it on the brand's site →

The only one of the five with arms, which gives you something to push on as you stand. The product sheet gives the seat as 17 inches wide and the stool as 22 inches wide overall; none of the page, the sheet or the dimension image gives the width between the arms. If your seated hip measurement is over 17 inches, ask the seller for that width before ordering (our suggestion). Back and seat are woven rattan on a powder-coated frame. Black, Medium Brown and Gray are all $109 at BizChair.

Drawbacks: Rated 400 lb static, the lowest figure here, and the seat is the shallowest at 14.5 inches. Flash prints the arms as 10.5 inches above the seat and 38.5 inches from the floor, which does not add up with its 29 inch seat height (our arithmetic). You attach the footrest.

How to choose

  1. Your seated hip width, against seat width. Sit on a hard, flat seat and measure across the widest part of your hips; our wide office chair guide has the full method. Look for a seat wider than your number. The widths here run from 16.75 to 18.5 inches, so if you measure more than 18.5, none of these five will give you a full seat.
  2. The underside of your counter, against seat height. Measure from the floor to the underside, not the top. One stool guide asks for 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside, and pairs 34 to 36 inch counters with 24 to 27 inch seats and 40 to 42 inch bars with 28 to 32 inch seats. Another says 11 to 12 inches is preferred for larger adults. Subtract each seat height from your number: under a bar whose underside is 41 inches, the 31 inch seats (swivel stool and Ladder Back) leave 10 inches and the Marseille bar stool (30.25) leaves 10.75, under the 11 to 12 inches the second guide prefers for larger adults, while the School House (11.5) and Lila (12) clear it (our arithmetic). The first guide’s own counter example is a 35 inch underside with a 25 inch seat, leaving 10 inches; the Marseille counter stool’s 25.75 inch seat would leave 9.25 there (our arithmetic), so measure your counter before choosing it. For a kitchen counter, the Marseille counter stool is the only pick here at that height.
  3. Your weight, against the figure. The figures run from 400 lb static (Lila) to 800 lb (the two wood stools). Keep a margin under the one you choose (our suggestion).
  4. How you get on and off. A swivel lets you turn to the side; arms give you something to push up from; a back that stands up from the seat gives you something to lean on. Here only the bucket seat stool swivels and only the Lila has arms.

Before you order

  • Count your counter. The same stool guide suggests leaving 6 to 10 inches between stools, and about 24 inches of counter per narrow stool and 28 to 30 inches per wider one.
  • Check the color. Prices above differ by color on three of the five picks and are a reference only.
  • Plan for assembly. The swivel stool, Ladder Back and Lila list assembly as required; the School House Back and Marseille do not.
  • Read the seller’s return terms before paying, including who pays return shipping.

For chairs at a dining table rather than a counter, see our wide dining chairs guide, and more chairs bought by the numbers are in our seating section.

Where these numbers come from

Ratings, seat sizes and features are from Flash Furniture’s product pages and the product sheets linked from them, and prices from BizChair, all read on 14 October 2026. Height and spacing rules are from the two stool guides linked above. Differences and the seat-to-bar gaps are our arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

What weight do these heavy duty bar stools hold?

Flash Furniture prints 800 lb for the School House Back and Ladder Back wood stools, 600 lb static for the Marseille, 500 lb for the swivel bucket seat stool (its product sheet says static) and 400 lb static for the Lila rattan stool. The two 800 lb stools do not say whether the figure is static or dynamic.

Does a 500 lb bar stool have a wide seat?

Not necessarily. Flash rates its 30 inch backless metal barstool with a square wood seat at 500 lb, and its product sheet gives that seat as 12 by 12 inches. Of the five picks here, seat widths run from 16.75 inches (Ladder Back) to 18.5 inches (swivel bucket seat). Read the seat width as well as the rating.

Do I need a counter stool or a bar stool?

Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter or bar and leave 10 to 12 inches between that and the seat, as one stool guide suggests. That guide pairs 34 to 36 inch counters with 24 to 27 inch seats and 40 to 42 inch bars with 28 to 32 inch seats. Of the five picks, only the Marseille is also sold at counter height, with a 25.75 inch seat, which leaves 9.25 inches under a 35 inch underside (our arithmetic), so measure first.

Which of these stools has arms, a swivel or no assembly?

Only the Lila rattan stool has arms, and only the bucket seat stool swivels (360 degrees). Flash lists the School House Back stool and both Marseille stools as needing no assembly; the other three (the swivel stool, Ladder Back and Lila) list assembly as required, and on the Lila the footrest goes on yourself.
