Mattress for a Heavy Person: 5 Picks and Their Weight Limits

Five mattresses whose makers print a weight limit, 500 lb to over 1,200 lb, each labelled its own way, with height, coil core, feel and the base each asks for.

Cover card reading “Mattress for a Heavy Person: 5 Picks and Their Weight Limits” over a made bed with white bedding and a grey upholstered headboard in a bright room with a desk by the window

The old mattress has a trench on your side, the edge folds when you sit to put your socks on, and the listing for the new one says “supportive” without a number. Buying the thickest or firmest bed on the page does not settle it, because neither thickness nor firmness is a weight rating. Below are five mattresses whose makers print a weight figure, with the label each one uses, the height and support core, what they need underneath, and who each one suits.

The short answer

Pick Best for Price (reference) Why
Titan Plus Core One heavy sleeper on the back or stomach $1,399 (queen) Up to 1,000 lb in its FAQ (over 1,200 in coil copy); firm, 12 in
Titan Plus Luxe Side sleepers, or a heavy sleeper with a lighter partner $1,665 (queen) Up to 1,000 lb in its FAQ (over 1,200 in coil copy); 13 in, medium feel
Big Fig Firm Two heavy sleepers who like it very firm (our reading of its figures) $1,849 (queen) Up to 1,200 lb (600 lb per sleeper)
Saatva HD A tall pillow-top bed for sleepers up to 500 lb $3,639 (queen) Up to 500 lb per sleeper; 15.5 in
Avocado Green Extra Firm Heavy couples who want a low, very firm bed $2,339 (queen) 550 lb per person, 1,100 lb total; 10 in

What the weight figure covers

Makers label the number in different ways, and for couples the label matters more than the number.

  • Per sleeper. Saatva’s spec list for the HD gives a “Mattress weight limit” of up to 500 lbs. per sleeper.
  • Per person and total. Avocado prints 550 lbs per person, or 1,100 lbs total for its Extra Firm.
  • Per sleeper, beside an unlabelled figure. Big Fig prints “Supports up to 1,200 lbs (up to 600 lbs per sleeper)” for its Firm, and “Max Weight Support 1,200lbs” in its comparison chart; neither line says the 1,200 is for two.
  • No split. Titan’s FAQs say the Plus Core and Plus Luxe are each “designed to support up to 1,000 pounds”, while the coil copy on the same pages says the core supports “weight over 1,200 pounds”. Neither line says per sleeper or total.

Our reading, not the makers’: where a page gives a per-sleeper figure, each of you should be under it; where it gives a total, your combined weight should be too. Big Fig’s 1,200 is twice its per-sleeper 600, so we treat it as the figure for two (our reading). Where a page gives neither, plan on the lower of the page’s two numbers and treat it as the limit for everyone on the bed together (our reading).

The five picks

Titan Plus Core

$1,399 (queen)Price for reference onlyUp to 1,000 lb (FAQ); coil core over 1,200 lb (copy) · 12 in tall · firm · 8 in unit of up to 900 encased coilsView it on the brand's site →

If you sleep alone, on your back or stomach, start here. Brooklyn Bedding’s Titan line sells it as “Firm Support for Plus Size Sleepers”: 12 inches tall, with a 1 inch quilted gel-foam top, 2 inches of TitanFlex foam and an 8 inch unit of up to 900 individually encased coils on a 0.25 inch base. The page lists it for back and stomach sleepers, and gives its weight as 75 to 135 pounds depending on size.

Drawbacks: The page gives two figures, 1,000 lb in the FAQ and over 1,200 lb for the coil core, and neither says per sleeper or total. Its own FAQ points a partner under 250 pounds to the softer Luxe.

Titan Plus Luxe

$1,665 (queen)Price for reference onlyUp to 1,000 lb (FAQ); over 1,200 lb (copy) · 13 in tall · medium · 8 in unit of up to 900 encased coilsView it on the brand's site →

Titan sells the Luxe as “Upgraded Comfort for Plus-Size Side Sleepers”. It is 13 inches tall and adds a 1 inch Supreme Response transition foam between the TitanFlex layer and the same 8 inch coil unit. The Core’s FAQ describes the Luxe as “a medium firmness sleep experience”, developed for plus-size sleepers who “require a more medium-level feel” and for “plus-size sleepers whose partners are not necessarily plus-size”. That makes it the Titan for a mixed-weight couple, on the maker’s account.

Drawbacks: Same two unlabelled figures as the Core. The Luxe page's FAQ suggests the firmer Titan Plus when both partners are plus-size.

Big Fig Firm

$1,849 (queen)Price for reference onlyUp to 1,200 lb (600 lb per sleeper) · 11.5 in tall · 9 on Big Fig's firmness scale · 15-gauge pocketed coilsView it on the brand's site →

If you are a heavy couple and you both like a hard surface, start here. Of the two picks that give a figure for two sleepers, it has the higher one: up to 1,200 lb (600 lb per sleeper), the 1,200 read as a figure for both of you (our reading). Its FAQ gives every size of the Firm as 11.5 inches tall. Under a quilted top with what Big Fig calls THERMOGEL COOLING sit two layers of high-density foam, a unit of 15-gauge pocketed steel coils, and what the page calls high density, 80 ILD edge foam. Big Fig sells a Heavy Duty Mattress Foundation alongside it that it calls “5x stronger than a standard foundation”.

Drawbacks: The firmest of Big Fig's three models on the maker's own scale; its comparison chart marks the Firm best for back sleepers and Big Fig's own Luxe for side sleepers.

Saatva HD

$3,639 (queen)Price for reference onlyUp to 500 lb per sleeper · 15.5 in tall · 5 to 7 of 10, called medium-firm and luxury firm on the page · 3 in pillow top, latex, 12.5-gauge coilsView it on the brand's site →

The pick if you want a thick pillow-top bed and each of you is under 500 lb. It is 15.5 inches high, with a 3 inch Euro pillow top, a layer of 5-zone natural latex, memory foam, 12.5-gauge tempered steel coils and high-density foam rails. Saatva rates the feel 5 to 7 on a 10 point scale “based on heavier sleepers weighing 300 to 500 pounds”. A queen weighs 135 pounds. Saatva pairs it with its own HD foundation, which the page calls “stronger than a typical foundation or box spring”.

Drawbacks: At 15.5 inches it is the tallest of the five picks, so check your sheets' pocket depth. Saatva says sleepers under 300 pounds will find it firmer, and a sleeper over 500 lb is past its per-sleeper figure.

Avocado Green Extra Firm

$2,339 (queen)Price for reference only550 lb per person, 1,100 lb total · 10 in (9.75 in one FAQ answer) · extra firm · two 14-gauge coil units, 1,600 coils in queenView it on the brand's site →

The pick for a heavy couple who want a lower, very firm bed. It prints 550 lb per person, or 1,100 lb total, on two stacked 3 inch units of 14-gauge pocketed coils, 1,600 in a queen, with coconut fibre padding between them and 2 inches of Dunlop latex on top. The page gives its height as 10 inches in the dimensions and 9.75 in one FAQ answer. It has no polyurethane foam in it, on the maker’s account.

Drawbacks: Avocado's page says strict side sleepers will likely find it too firm. It requires paid in-home delivery and setup because of its weight and construction (a queen weighs 141 lb), and Avocado's own adjustable base, rated 850 lb total, sits below the mattress's 1,100 lb.

How to choose

  • Weigh each of you, then add. A sleeper over 500 lb is past the Saatva’s per-sleeper figure; over 550, past the Avocado’s; over 600, past the Big Fig’s. For two people, a 380 lb and a 340 lb sleeper come to 720 lb (our arithmetic), under Avocado’s 1,100 lb total and under Big Fig’s 1,200 lb, read as a two-sleeper figure (our reading).
  • Match the feel to how you sleep, on the makers’ labels. Back or stomach: the Titan Plus Core, Big Fig Firm or Avocado Extra Firm. Side: the Titan Plus Luxe. Saatva’s HD page says “Best suited for back sleepers, but also great for combination & stomach sleepers” in one section and lists “All sleep positions” in another.
  • If one of you is much lighter, Titan’s FAQ is specific: a partner under 250 pounds points to the Luxe.
  • Measure the slat gap on the base you own. Our reading of the rules below: 5 inches or less between slats meets Titan’s and Avocado’s figure, under 4 inches with slats at least 3 inches wide meets Saatva’s list, and any gap over 5 inches is outside all three figures: Saatva’s FAQ recommends plywood or similar over slats, Avocado lists its own bunkie boards and foundations as meeting its rules, and Titan lists box foundations and solid platforms.
  • Measure your current bed top from the floor. The picks run from 9.75 or 10 inches to 15.5, a spread of more than 5 inches (our arithmetic) before you add a foundation.

What goes underneath

A mattress rated for your weight still needs a base that is. Each maker sets its own rules:

The frames and foundations that print a load rating, 700 to 2,500 pounds, are in our heavy duty bed frame guide, and why the rules on centre supports start at queen is in sturdy queen bed frame. If two of you need more room than a king, see oversized king bed.

Before you order

  1. Check the price for your size in the cart. The prices above are for a queen, without any promo code, and are a reference only: each maker prices by size, and prices can change.
  2. Plan the delivery. The Avocado needs paid in-home delivery and setup; a queen Saatva HD weighs 135 lb and a queen Avocado 141 lb.
  3. Read the return terms before paying: Titan, Saatva, Big Fig, Avocado.

Where these numbers come from

Weight figures, heights, layers and base rules are from each maker’s product page, read on 30 September 2026; queen prices from the same pages on 1 October 2026. Sums and differences are our arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can a mattress for a heavy person hold?

The five picks here print figures from 500 lb to over 1,200 lb, each labelled its own way: Saatva HD up to 500 lb per sleeper, Avocado Extra Firm 550 lb per person or 1,100 lb total, Big Fig Firm up to 1,200 lb (600 lb per sleeper), and the two Titan models up to 1,000 lb in their FAQs and over 1,200 lb in their coil copy, with no per-sleeper or total label.

What is the best mattress for a 400 lb person?

All five picks print a figure above 400 lb. For a single sleeper on their back or stomach, start with the Titan Plus Core or the Big Fig Firm; for a side sleeper, the Titan Plus Luxe, which Titan sells for plus-size side sleepers. Then check that your bed base meets that maker's rules.

What mattress works for two heavy people?

Of the five picks, two give a figure for two sleepers: Avocado Extra Firm at 1,100 lb total (550 lb per person), and Big Fig Firm at up to 1,200 lb (600 lb per sleeper), read as a figure for both of you (our reading). Our rule of thumb: add both weights and keep under that figure, and each person under the per-sleeper figure. Titan's FAQ suggests its firm Titan Plus when both partners are plus-size; treat its 1,000 lb as the limit for both of you (our reading).

Does a heavy person's mattress need a special bed frame?

Each maker sets rules. Titan asks for slats no more than 5 inches apart; Avocado a rigid centre support with a leg to the floor at queen and up, and slats no more than 5 inches apart; Saatva lists slats at least 3 inches wide and under 4 inches apart, and its FAQ recommends its HD foundation or a solid platform.
