Plus Size Shapewear: 7 Picks by Garment Type and Size Range

Seven plus size shapewear pieces for under a fitted dress: a slip, two bodysuits, a brief and three shorts, with each one's sizes, fabric and construction.

Cover card reading “Plus Size Shapewear: 7 Picks by Garment Type and Size Range” over a woman in a white gown checking her reflection in a mirror

The dress fits, but under it every seam and band shows: a line across your hips, a ridge where your underwear ends, and a waistband that has rolled into a tube by the time you sit down. Sizing up in the dress does not fix it, and the first control brief you grab can dig in at the leg and leave your thighs chafing. Below are seven pieces to wear underneath, sorted by garment type, each with the sizes its listing sells, the fabric, and the construction details that decide whether it rolls, rides up or shows.

The quick answer

Snag Smoothwear Open Bust Bodysuit Open-bust bodysuit A/B to J2 “lightly smoothing” $34.25
Knix Shape & Smooth Slip Slip, built-in bra S to XXXL+ Not labelled $78
Honeylove SuperPower Short Thigh short XS to 3X “highest compression level” $89
Knix Customizable Shaper High Rise Shorts Long thigh short XS to XXXXL Not labelled $65
Honeylove Queen Brief High-waist brief XS to 3X “level four: Strong Support” $84
Knix Thigh Saver 6” Anti-chafe short XS to XXXXL Not labelled $39

Which type goes under which dress

  • A slip is one layer of fabric from the bust to mid-thigh, worn between your underwear and the dress. It covers your torso and hips but has no gusset and no legs.
  • A bodysuit is one piece from the bust or chest to the gusset. Both here open at the crotch, which matters on a long evening. The Knix has no separate waistband; the Snag has a “super high waist” held by grip elastic at its waistline.
  • A high-waist brief stops at the top of the leg. It has no leg to ride up, but it also does nothing between your thighs.
  • A thigh short puts fabric between your thighs. The inseam decides where the leg hem sits, and that hem has to end above your dress hem or it will show when you sit.

Check your hip against every chart below, and your bra band too for the Knix bodysuit and the slip. If you have not measured recently, how to measure your bust, waist and hips walks through it.

The seven

Knix Customizable Shaper Mid-Thigh Bodysuit

$135 Price for reference only · XS to XXXXL++ · View it on the brand’s site →

A mid-thigh bodysuit with a wireless scoop neckline and adjustable straps, in 53% LYCRA XTRA LIFE spandex and 47% nylon, with a cotton-blend gusset. Knix calls it “medium-compression”, with a gusset flap “for easy bathroom breaks”. Its PerfectCut feature lets you shorten the legs and deepen the back; for the back, the listing says to cut just above the velvet line with fabric scissors. Its 24 sizes pair a letter with a cup group: on the size guide on the listing, XXXXL is a 44 band, a 52-inch waist and a 54 to 56-inch hip, with + for D to E cups and ++ for F to G. It suits a bodycon or knit dress if your cup is in that range.

Drawbacks: at $135 it is the priciest of the seven, and a cut leg or back cannot be uncut, so try it with the dress before you pick up the scissors (our reading). The chart stops at a 56-inch hip.

Snag Smoothwear Open Bust Bodysuit

$34.25 Price for reference only · A/B to J2 · View it on the brand’s site →

An open-bust bodysuit with adjustable straps and a super high waist, in 44% polyamide, 28% recycled polyamide and 28% elastane, with power mesh panels at the bust and the top of the leg, a cotton gusset liner and poppers at the crotch. The waistline holds with what Snag calls “strong grip elastic” instead of silicone, and the spec line reads “Latex and Silicone free”. The Smoothwear size guide says the range is “designed to be lightly smoothing under clothing” and runs from clothes size 1/2 (A/B) to 34 (J2), where the hip is 71¼ to 73¼ inches, the largest hip on any chart here. If your waist and hip fall in different bands, the guide says to go with the lower band.

Drawbacks: it is open at the bust, so you wear your own bra with it. One reviewer on the listing wrote “The only issue is the poppers. Once undone, it is so difficult to redo after a trip to the loo”, though added it might be user error.

Knix Shape & Smooth Slip

$78 Price for reference only · S to XXXL+ · View it on the brand’s site →

A mid-thigh slip with a built-in bra and “seamless construction”, in 62% nylon and 38% spandex with a nylon-spandex lining, machine washable. Knix pitches it for wearing under a dress: “Slip into that dress a little more easily”. Sizes follow your bra: on the size guide on the listing, XXXL is a 42 band in A to DD, and XXXL+ a 42 band in E/DDD to G.

Drawbacks: the chart goes only to a 42 band and gives no hip or waist figures, and there is no gusset or leg, so it does nothing for thigh chafing on its own. The listing names no compression level.

Honeylove SuperPower Short

$89 Price for reference only · XS to 3X · View it on the brand’s site →

A thigh short with a 6¾-inch inseam, flexible boning in the side seams and a silicone-lined band, plus optional removable straps for a long torso. The gusset is cotton with an opening, so you can use the bathroom without taking it off, and the listing describes the leg opening as a “seamless, dig-free transition”. In the brand’s FAQ, it sits at “our highest compression level” of five support levels. The body is 66% nylon and 34% LYCRA elastane. Beside the sizes sit a Find My Size tool and an optional fit check that asks for your dress size, on a US scale running 0 to 24, and your waist.

Drawbacks: the top size is 3X. The care label says hand wash cold and line dry; the brand’s FAQ allows a cold, delicate machine wash, always air dried.

Knix Customizable Shaper High Rise Shorts

$65 Price for reference only · XS to XXXXL · View it on the brand’s site →

Shorts that sit above your natural waist with a 16-inch inseam and “seamless bonded edges”, in the same spandex-nylon as the Knix bodysuit, with a cotton-blend gusset. Rows on the legs let you cut them to two shorter lengths, which helps if the hem would show under a knee-length dress. On the size guide on the listing, XXXL is a 48-inch waist and 51 to 53-inch hip, and XXXXL a 52-inch waist and 54 to 56-inch hip.

Drawbacks: the review summary on the listing says “some note the waistband tends to roll down” and that “sizing runs small, with many recommending going up one or two sizes”. The listing names no compression level.

Honeylove Queen Brief

$84 Price for reference only · XS to 3X · View it on the brand’s site →

A high-waist brief with a doubleknit compression panel over the midsection, flexible side boning, a mesh brief bottom and a cotton gusset, with optional removable straps. The brand’s FAQ says to pull the waistband “up to your bra line” and rates it “a level four: Strong Support garment”. The body is 65% nylon and 35% elastane. It suits a dress where you want nothing at the leg, such as a slit or a short hem.

Drawbacks: it has no leg, so it does nothing for thigh chafing, and for the bathroom the FAQ’s answer is that the brief bottom pulls up and down easily. Sizes stop at 3X.

Knix Thigh Saver 6”

$39 Price for reference only · XS to XXXXL · View it on the brand’s site →

A high-rise, long-leg short with an approximately 6-inch inseam, in 77% nylon and 23% Lycra Xtra Life, with a cotton-blend gusset, machine washable. The listing names no compression level for this version; its point is fabric between your thighs under a dress or skirt. On the size guide on the listing, XXXL is a 51 to 53-inch hip (pants 24 to 26) and XXXXL a 54 to 56-inch hip (pants 26). At $39 it is the lowest of the six Knix and Honeylove prices.

Drawbacks: the review summary on the listing says “a significant number report issues with the waistband rolling down or the shorts sliding down during wear”. The listing lists no boning or grip band.

How to choose

  • Your hip is over 56 inches: the Knix charts with hip figures stop there. Snag’s Smoothwear guide runs to a 73¼-inch hip at J2.
  • Your waistband rolls down: the Knix bodysuit is one piece with no separate waistband; of the shorts and briefs, the SuperPower Short is the one pick here listing both side boning and a silicone-lined band. The Queen Brief has boning but no silicone band listed.
  • Your thighs chafe: a short, not a brief. The inseam sets the hem: about 6 inches on the Thigh Saver, 6¾ on the SuperPower Short, 16 on the Knix shorts before any cutting.
  • Your skin reacts to silicone: the Snag bodysuit is listed as latex and silicone free.
  • You will be out for hours: check the crotch. The SuperPower Short has a gusset opening, the Knix bodysuit a gusset flap, the Snag bodysuit poppers.

Before you order

  • Measure your hip, then your bra band if you are buying a bodysuit or the slip, and check each against the brand’s own chart; the three brands use three different size systems.
  • Try it on under the actual dress, sitting as well as standing, and check where the leg hem falls against the dress hem.
  • Read each store’s returns page before you buy.

Where these numbers come from

Sizes, prices, fabrics, compression labels and quoted phrases are copied from each brand’s product listing, size chart and FAQ, read on 28 September 2026 (the Snag price on 1 October 2026); Knix, Honeylove and Snag’s US store price in US dollars. The note on cutting the Knix bodysuit is our reading of its instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Which piece here is a slip, and what does it cover?

The Knix Shape & Smooth Slip: mid-thigh length with a built-in bra, sold S to XXXL+ (a 42 band). It has no gusset and no legs; if you also want fabric between your thighs, a bodysuit or a thigh short covers more.

Which plus size shapewear here goes up the furthest?

Of the charts with hip figures, Snag's Smoothwear Open Bust Bodysuit: its US size guide reaches J2, clothes size 34, with a 71¼ to 73¼-inch hip. The Knix charts stop at XXXXL, a 54 to 56-inch hip. Honeylove sells to 3X and points you to its Find My Size tool.

How do I keep shapewear from rolling down?

Look at the construction. The Knix bodysuit is one piece with no separate waistband; the Snag bodysuit's waistline uses what Snag calls "strong grip elastic". Of the shorts and briefs here, the Honeylove SuperPower Short lists side boning and a silicone-lined band, and the Queen Brief lists side boning. The Knix Thigh Saver and Knix shorts review summaries both mention waistbands rolling down.

Can I use the bathroom without taking shapewear off?

Three list a crotch opening: the Honeylove SuperPower Short has an opening in the gusset, the Knix Customizable Shaper Mid-Thigh Bodysuit a gusset flap, and the Snag Smoothwear bodysuit poppers at the crotch.
