Measure the number first

The drop is waist-to-hip difference in inches, and it is the measurement this page is sorted by. Take the natural waist at the narrowest point, an inch or two above the navel, and the hip at the fullest point of the hips and seat, which NYDJ’s guide puts at about 7 to 9 inches below the natural waist. Subtract.

Two reference points for what you get. NYDJ’s own chart is drawn with a 10-inch drop on every regular and plus row but one, from a 24 to 25-inch waist against 34 to 35-inch hips at size 00 up to 48 to 50 against 58 to 60 at 28W; the 22W row is the exception at 9. Democracy’s bottoms chart runs 10 to 10½ apart, 25.5 against 35.5 at size 0 and 47 against 57.5 at 24W. On those two charts a 10-inch drop is what the regular cut is drawn around, and Universal Standard draws its own line at the same number.

One of the two pairs here, with the Etta below, whose product page prints the drop: built “for those who have over a 10” waist-to-hip difference, for a close waist fit”. High rise, straight leg, sold in 27 and 32-inch inseams, described as true to size. Start here if your drop is over 10. The downside is the price, and the fact that a 27 or 32-inch inseam is the whole choice.

Universal Standard Refined Etta High Rise Straight Leg, $148, sizes 00 to 40. The Donna’s sibling for the other side of the line, cut “for those who have less than a 10” waist-to-hip difference, for a true straight fit through the hip and leg.” If your drop measured 8 or 9 and curvy jeans have always bagged at the hip, this is the one to try. Good American Good Curve Straight Compression Jeans, $94.99, sizes 00 to 32 Plus. A high-rise straight in compression denim with a contour seam and a gap-proof waistband, 28-inch inseam. Good American does not print a drop figure, so read it as a curve cut by construction rather than by number. The compression fabric is the point: the page sells it as sculpting and supportive, while the Good Legs below is sold on super-stretch rather than compression.

Good American Good Legs Straight Jeans, $98, sizes 00 to 22 Plus. The same brand’s regular straight, slim through the waist and thighs with the same gap-proof waistband, 27.5-inch inseam, for a preference for super-stretch over compression; no drop printed. Note the size run stops at 22 Plus on this colour.

Warp + Weft BNA Soft Curve Barrel Jeans, $118, waist sizes 24 to 32, and the BNA Plus in 14W to 24W at the same price. A mid-rise barrel with a relaxed fit and a 28-inch inseam. The brand calls the cut soft-curve without printing a drop figure, though its fit guide draws its chart 10 inches apart, from a 25-inch waist and 35-inch hip at 00 to 47 and 57 at 24W. The product description is that “the subtle curved leg creates shape through the hip and tapers at the ankle”. Not the pair if you want a straight leg.

NYDJ Marilyn Straight Jeans, $99, sizes 00 to 18, and in Plus, $119, 14W to 28W. Cut on that 10-inch-drop chart, with a criss-cross front panel the brand calls Lift Tuck. Two things to know before ordering: NYDJ tells customers to order one size smaller than usual, and its chart prints “your size (other brands) 12” next to “NYDJ 10”, so the label runs a size big by design. Democracy “Ab”solution High Rise Straight Leg Jeans, $78, sizes 0 to 16, and the plus version, $98, 14W to 24W. How to choose between them
