Why the torso is the fit problem

A pair of trousers only has to reach your waist; a one-piece has to reach from your shoulders to your crotch as well, and that length is fixed once the garment is cut. The brands below handle it in three different ways, and it helps to know which one you are buying.

Separate body lengths. Lucy & Yak’s Tall fit is offered to people 5’10” and above and lengthens the torso, rise, sleeves and leg without adding width. Its Petite fit goes the other way, for 5’2” and under, reducing both length and width, and it stops at UK 16. Big Bud Press sells its jumpsuit in Petite and Long cuts, both through 6XL, each changing torso and inseam together.

Leg length only. Lucy & Yak’s separate Long fit adds 5 cm to the trouser length with “no changes to the width, rise, or overall shape”. It fixes a short leg, not a short body, so do not pick it for a torso problem.

Tall that stops before plus. Wildfang’s Essential High Waisted Coverall has a Tall height option, but on that listing it is offered from S to XXL; the 1X to 4X sizes are Regular only. Its product measurement table, taken with the garment laid flat, gives a torso figure on all 15 rows; the plus rows run from 37” at 1X to 41 1/8” at 4X. Compare them with a one-piece you own, measured flat the same way.

Fabric is the other thing to read. Big Bud Press’s twill “does not have stretch built into the fabric”, while Universal Standard’s Kate is 6% elastane and Smash + Tess’s jersey is 6% spandex.

A cotton-with-2%-spandex coverall with a zip front, a snap at the neck, a two-button adjustable waist and an elastic back waistband, with a 29” inseam from XS to 3X. The body chart runs to a 57–61” chest and 58–62” hip at 4X. Who it suits: anyone who wants a zip front and a waist they can cinch.

The catch is the one above: the Tall option ends at XXL. Worth knowing too that XXL and 1X share the same body measurements on Wildfang’s chart but are cut differently, with a flat shoulder of 19 1/4” at XXL and 17 1/4” at 1X, so on our reading of the table, broad shoulders may do better in the straight-size XXL.

Wildfang Essential Jumpsuit

A 100% cotton jumpsuit with a classic collar, button front, adjustable button cuffs and a tapered leg with convertible cuffs, on the same body chart as the coverall. It is the cheaper Wildfang and the one with buttons rather than a zip.

The drawback is fit: it is described as “Tailored fit through body”, and this listing has no Tall option and no product measurement table, so you cannot check the torso length before ordering.

Unisex, in 9 oz 100% cotton twill with a snap front and elastic at the back of the waist, made in Los Angeles. The size run reaches 6XL, and the same jumpsuit comes in the Petite and Long cuts above, which is why it is our first pick for anyone whose torso is the problem.

The drawbacks: the twill is rigid until it breaks in, at $210 it costs more than both Wildfang picks, and some colours cost more (Fruit Fantasy is $268). Check the size chart linked from the listing, since sizes are unisex.

Universal Standard Sunny Divine Jersey Jumpsuit

The drawback is that pull-on means stepping out of the whole thing, and the A-line drape is the opposite of the workwear look.

The drawbacks: the store showed prices in Canadian dollars when read, the listing does not describe any fastening, and there is one body length.
