Oversized Blankets: Real Sizes in Inches, Five Picks

Oversized blankets in inches: the word runs from a 50 by 70 throw to a 10-foot square, so here is how to measure what you need, and five picks with prices.

Cover card reading “Oversized Blankets: Real Sizes in Inches, Five Picks” over a beige sofa covered in a loose cream blanket with a pink cushion

You pull the throw up to your shoulders and your feet come out of the bottom, or you tuck it round your hips and one side of you is out in the air. Buying the one labelled oversized does not settle it: on the pages we read, the word runs from a 50 by 70-inch throw to a 10-foot square, and the five throws sold as XL or Oversized are all 60 by 80, only 10 inches wider than a 50 by 70 (our arithmetic). Below is how to measure the size you need on your own couch, then five blankets from 60 by 80 inches up to 10 by 10 feet, each with its printed size and price.

The short answer

Pick Best for Price (reference) Size (in)
Saranoni Minky Stretch XL Throw The lowest price at 60 × 80 $79.00 60 × 80
Brooklinen Bigtime Throw Blanket A cotton throw at 60 × 80 $149 60 W × 80 L
Brooklinen Super Fluff Throw Blanket, Oversized Faux fur at 60 × 80 $149 60 W × 80 L
Saranoni Double Ruched Faux Fur Throw, XXL Faux fur, longer and wider than the 60 × 80 throws here $289 80 × 100
Big Blanket Co Original Stretch Blanket Two or more people, or the widest wrap $109 to $179 in solid colours 72, 96 or 120 square

How big a throw is, and how big “oversized” is

A throw is not one size. Saranoni’s Minky Stretch line lists its Throw at 50 by 60 inches; Brooklinen’s Super Fluff Throw and Southshore’s microfleece Throw are both 50 by 70.

The XL step is smaller than the word suggests. The five throws we read that are sold as XL or Oversized, Brooklinen’s Super Fluff Oversized and Saranoni’s Minky Stretch XL, Bamboni XL, Lush XL and Double Ruched XL, are all 60 by 80 inches, and so is Brooklinen’s one-size Bigtime Throw. That is 10 inches wider than the three throws above, and 10 inches longer than a 50 by 70 (our arithmetic).

“Oversized” on its own tells you even less. Southshore sells a 50 by 70 Throw in a line it calls Oversized, and Big Blanket Co’s page title calls its 6, 8 and 10-foot squares an oversized throw. Past 60 by 80, the two larger picks here are Saranoni’s Double Ruched in its 80 by 100 XXL size and Big Blanket Co’s squares.

Measure the size you need

These three measurements are our suggestion, not a maker’s. Use a soft tape, sit or lie the way you usually do, and have someone hold the end.

  1. Length: from the top of your shoulder to past your toes, plus however much you like to tuck under your feet.
  2. Width: from the seat cushion on one side of you, over your lap and hips, down to the cushion on the other side.
  3. Two people: sit side by side and measure from the cushion beside one of you, across both laps, to the cushion beside the other.

Then compare: your width against the blanket’s short side, your length against its long side. If your width is over 60 inches, a 60 by 80 throw turned sideways gives 80 across but only 60 from shoulder to toe; that is where the larger sizes below come in (our reading). If you are also looking at the couch itself, our couch for a heavy person guide lists sofas with a printed weight rating and seat depth.

Five picks, by size

Where a page prints only two figures, we give them in the order printed. Brooklinen and Big Blanket Co label width and length; Saranoni does not.

60 by 80 throws

Saranoni Minky Stretch XL Throw Blanket

$79.00Price for reference only60 × 80 in · 95% polyester, 5% spandex · 9 colours listedView it on the brand's site →

If a 60 by 80 is enough, start here: it is the same size as the two Brooklinen throws below for $79.00 against $149. The fabric is 95% polyester and 5% spandex, which the brand calls “built-in stretch”. This listing is the XL; the same line also comes in a 50 by 60 Throw.

Drawbacks: The care lines say wash cold, no fabric softeners or pods, and hang dry or lay flat; neither mentions a tumble dryer (our reading). The page does not say which of the two figures is the width.

Brooklinen Bigtime Throw Blanket

$149Price for reference only60 W × 80 L in · cotton front and back, polyester fill · one sizeView it on the brand's site →

For a cotton face rather than polyester: the front and back are 100% cotton over a polyester fill, and the page labels it 60 wide by 80 long. Care is machine wash cold and tumble dry low. Brooklinen calls it lightweight.

Drawbacks: One size only, and all five colourways are the same Tandem Stripe pattern in different colours. It costs nearly twice the Saranoni for the same 60 by 80.

Brooklinen Super Fluff Throw Blanket, Oversized

$149 Oversized, $129 ThrowPrice for reference onlyOversized 60 W × 80 L in · Throw 50 W × 70 L in · 100% polyester faux fur · 7 coloursView it on the brand's site →

For a shaggy faux fur throw. Pick the Oversized, not the Throw: on the same page the Oversized is 60 by 80 and the Throw 50 by 70, so the extra $20 buys 10 inches of width and 10 of length (our arithmetic).

Drawbacks: The Oversized costs $20 more than the Throw and the same as the cotton Bigtime, and the fabric is 100% polyester.

Bigger than 60 by 80

Saranoni Double Ruched Faux Fur Throw, XXL

$289 XXL, $219 XLPrice for reference onlyXXL 80 × 100 in · XL 60 × 80 in · 100% poly microfiber faux fur on both sides · XXL in 3 coloursView it on the brand's site →

For a rectangular faux fur throw past 60 by 80. The XXL is 80 by 100, 20 inches more each way than the 60 by 80 throws above (our arithmetic); turned sideways it gives 100 inches across two laps (our reading). Saranoni calls it “our biggest Double Ruched Blanket yet”, with faux fur on both sides. The same page sells the 60 by 80 XL at $219, so check the size option before you order.

Drawbacks: The most expensive pick here, and Big Blanket Co's 8-foot square is bigger in area for $149 (our arithmetic). The care line says lay flat to dry, which takes room at 80 by 100, and the page does not say which figure is the width.

Big Blanket Co Original Stretch Blanket

$109 (6 ft), $149 (8 ft), $179 (10 ft) in solid coloursPrice for reference only72 × 72, 96 × 96 or 120 × 120 in · 93% polyester, 7% spandex · 520 GSM stretch knitView it on the brand's site →

For the widest wrap, or for two or more people. The 6-foot size is 72 inches each way, wider than the 60 by 80 throws here; the 8-foot is 96 square, nearly twice the area of a 60 by 80, and the 10-foot is 120 square, three times it (our arithmetic). Being square, it has no wrong way round. The fabric is a polyester and spandex stretch knit, machine wash cold and tumble dry low, and the brand says it fits in a standard-size washing machine.

Drawbacks: Patterned colours cost $10 more in each size. The 6-foot size is square, so it is 8 inches shorter than a 60 by 80 throw while 12 inches wider.

How to choose

  • Your width is 60 inches or less and your length is 80 or less: any 60 by 80 throw. Saranoni at $79.00 for stretch, Brooklinen Bigtime for cotton, Super Fluff for faux fur.
  • Your width is over 60: Big Blanket Co’s 6-foot gives 72 across at $109, or Saranoni’s XXL 80 at $289.
  • Your length is over 80: Big Blanket Co’s 8-foot at 96, or Saranoni’s XXL at 100.
  • Two people on one blanket: if your across-both-laps measurement is 80 or less, a 60 by 80 turned sideways; over 80, Big Blanket Co’s 8-foot at 96 or Saranoni’s XXL turned sideways at 100.
  • You want weight rather than size: our king size weighted blanket guide gives each weight’s size in inches.

Before you order

  1. Check the size option you are adding to the basket. Brooklinen’s Super Fluff, Saranoni’s Double Ruched and Big Blanket Co each sell two or three sizes on one page.
  2. Check the care line against your washer and dryer. Saranoni’s Minky Stretch says hang dry or lay flat and its Double Ruched says lay flat; the cotton Bigtime and Big Blanket Co say tumble dry low.
  3. For a bed rather than the couch, size by the mattress instead: our oversized king quilts guide shows how to work out width from mattress depth.
  4. Read the seller’s return terms before you order a size you have not measured for.

Where these numbers come from

Sizes, fabrics, care lines and prices are from each brand’s product page and product data, read on 16 October 2026. Areas, the differences between sizes and the three measurements are our arithmetic and our suggestion.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an oversized blanket?

There is no one size. Of the pages we read, the word covers anything from Southshore's “Oversized” microfleece line, which starts at a 50 by 70-inch Throw, to Big Blanket Co's Original Stretch, which its page title calls an oversized throw, at 72, 96 or 120 inches square. The five throws we read that are sold as XL or Oversized, one from Brooklinen and four from Saranoni, are all 60 by 80. Check the inches, not the label.

What is the size of a standard throw blanket?

It depends on the product. Saranoni's Minky Stretch Throw is 50 by 60 inches, and Brooklinen's Super Fluff Throw and Southshore's microfleece Throw are 50 by 70. A 60 by 80 XL throw is 10 inches wider than those three and 10 to 20 inches longer (our arithmetic). Some throws are bigger from the start: Brooklinen's one-size Bigtime Throw is 60 by 80.

Is a 60 by 80 throw big enough for two people?

Measure first. Sit side by side the way you usually do and run a tape from the seat cushion beside one of you, across both laps, to the cushion beside the other. Up to 60 inches, lay a 60 by 80 throw with the 60-inch side across your laps; up to 80, turn it so the 80-inch side runs across; over 80, look at the 96-inch square or the 80 by 100 (our suggestion).

Will a 60 by 80 throw cover a bed?

Saranoni says two of its 60 by 80 throws fit the top of a queen bed: its Bamboni XL is “Large enough to cover the entire surface of a queen sized bed”. For a blanket that hangs over the sides, size by the mattress, as in our oversized king quilts guide; Big Blanket Co calls its 8 by 8-foot size “Perfect for a queen size bed” and its 10 by 10 “Perfect for a king size bed”.
